Celtic Tree Month of Alder/ Ffearn (FAIR-n) runs from March 18th to April 14th.

Plant Information:

This tree is a member of the Birch family and is native to the British Isles, Europe and North America. Alders require a great quantity of water and can reach 65 feet or more if left to grow undisturbed. The tree itself grows in a rough cone shape with branches that are evenly spaced down its long trunk, The leaves are roundish and finely toothed and in the spring it produces flowers and catkins. The wood from this sacred tree comes in a number of colors. When an alder is cut down the wood changes from white to reddish-yellow that bears a remarkable resemblance to blood. This caused our ancestors to believe that the tree bled when cut and it was considered unlucky to cut one down. The wood is oily and water resistant and in past times was used for shields, the foundations for houses and is still used today in cabinetry and door making.

In healing alder has been used as a substitute for quinine. It has also been used to treat parasites, inflammation coughs, poison ivy, toothache, sprains and strains. On an interesting side note the inner bark is a great natural pesticide.

In Myth & Magick

The time surrounding the Vernal Equinox is and was important in the wheel of the Celtic year. The alder represents free will and liberty. In some places today it is still a crime to cut down this sacred tree. The person who is dumb enough to cut one down is seen as the cause of any trouble that happens in his neighborhood. The alder tree is also associated with courage and the evolution of spirit. This tree spirit can be called upon for help during disputes, where you need to see clearly to make the right decision or when you simply need to draw and bring forward you own inner strength.

Alder is associated with all four elements ( earth, air, water, fire) and is great for elemental magick. Flutes can be made from the wood and whistles from young alder shoots can be made to summon air elementals.

Alder is a fairy tree and as such is good for fairy magick. The leaves and twigs can be used in charms and talismans for protection. Dyes can be made from the bark, flowers and twigs to dye ritual robes. Red: Bark/ Green: Flowers/ Brown: twigs.

Alder People:

People born in the month of Alder make excellent oracles, they can tell you like it is and manage to do it gently. However, alder people must remember not to abuse their power, and just like the tree itself they tend to mature slowly.  315: Every so often it becomes necessary to eliminate the things that no longer work for us. This includes releasing old and outdated feelings, emotions, thoughts, habits, relationships and patterns. This helps to clear the way so that we can receive new and wonderful things. Although sometimes it feels like the universe has given us too much to handle and negativity rears its ugly head. This reaction is normal (don’t worry)! The key lies in acknowledging these feelings and not letting them take control. Today the angels are advising us to learn from our past mistakes and experiences. Look for the lessons in them and find ONE GOOD THING that came of them, then let them go and move forward. Our ONE GOOD THING is a  starting place to build to  the next level. ( I like to do this exercise outside and if it’s breezy it’s even better. let the wind move through you and visualize it clearing your energy field.) We all have areas that need attention and if something is not okay, or isn’t working out for you then the time has come to move on and create something better. The key is in being honest with yourself so don’t put frosting on a problem and then tell yourself that it’s all better. It’s through change that we make these needed improvements, and while changes take time remember that baby steps are the key to making them successful. By keeping ourselves open to receiving these blessings it draws the things we need directly to us. This is a reminder that slowing down activates our creative mind and makes these things easier to visualize and grasp and by taking the time to “smell the roses” the attitude of gratitude flows more easily.

The Ascended Master Maitreya teaches us that laughter and joy are an essential part of self care and creates the positive energy we need to propel us forward. It helps us to let go stress and worry, which allows the light of faith and hope to shine through. The power of laughter clears and resets or energy field by releasing tension and emotions that have been held in check. This is an important lesson on our path, if it makes your heart sing then it’s the right direction.

 The Greek goddess Nike, Lady of victory and success  helps us to embrace the good things  that we have accomplished. By acknowledging them we can increase our faith in ourselves as a creator. She says: “Do not be afraid to acknowledge the amazing things you have done but don’t rest to long on your laurels. Remember that your power comes through movement and momentum is lost through inactivity. Keep moving and you will be victorious!”

Today’s Message: Fine Tuning Our Receptors

310: Today the Universe is asking us to use our intuitive skills and look for the truth around us. This includes our personal truth as well as the truth in the people and situations that surround us. Intuition like any talent gets better the more we use it. This helps us to make better decisions along our path and create and maintain better relationships. By allowing ourselves to feel and see from a more spiritual perspective we gain better communication and manifestation skills and strengthen our ability to let go of the things that are holding us back or draining our energy. Remember to take time for self-care through the ground, center clear process as it helps to fine tune our intuitive receptors. If you need help ask the masters and angels for guidance and they will guide you in the right direction.

Today’s Spirit Helpers include:

Archangel Gabriel helps us to access our inner wisdom and shows us how it can guide and inspire us. Gabriel also teaches us the importance of communication on all levels. This helps us to overcome our fears so that we can complete the things we start and achieve positive results during times of transformation and change. 

The Ascended Master El Morya can help if you have trouble staying present and focused in the now. He teaches us the importance of putting aside what we cannot control  so that we are free to think about other things. He reminds us that it is our faith that  keeps us grounded so that we can embrace both the patience and the clear decision making needed to make things happen.
