Senate honored Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, by changing the name of their month “Sextilis” to “Augustus.” Middle English speakers inherited the name of the month of August, but it wasn’t until the mid-1600s that “august” came to be used generically in English, more or less as “augustus” was in Latin, to refer to someone with imperial qualities.

Spirit Library: Discern What is Worthy
a message from Kate Spreckley

This week holds a major turning point in our journey of awakening, healing and growth. As such we are urged to assess what is and what isn’t working in our lives. It is a time to be objective while considering our challenges and confronting our problems from a practical perspective. There is the possibility of abrupt changes as things may not go exactly as planned. The key is to remain present and open to what is being revealed from within. To stay in the flow and fine tune our ability to discern what is worthy of our attention and focus.

EarthSky News: Moon And Gemini Stars At Dawn August 5 And 6

On the mornings of August 5 and 6, 2021, you’ll find the waning crescent moon in front of the constellation Gemini the Twins. Gemini’s two brightest stars, Castor and Pollux, represent twin brothers in Greek mythology. These two stars don’t look alike. Pollux is slightly brighter than Castor and more golden in color. But no two bright stars in our sky lie so near one another. Their brightness and proximity has made Castor and Pollux a symbol of brotherly love for centuries.

Inner Journey:

Soul lives in connection

“We all seek Soul. While Soul is always present, it doesn’t appear in our lives automatically. Soul requires our attention and reflection. Offering our respectful regard to the Soul is a way of loving it, caring for it, nurturing it.”
— Benjamin Shield and Richard Carlson

How do we experience soul in our lives?

It’s so simple! STOP AND PAY ATTENTION! Soul lives in connection. Whenever we are present and conscious, soul emerges.

To easily experience soul, find something you love to do and immerse yourself in it. Consciously savour a favourite piece of music. Consciously enjoy a walk in nature. Really experience your breathing and the pounding of your heart as you exercise. Really be present to your partner, your kids, your pet or another, and you will know the contentment of soul.

“I think that whenever soul is present, it’s because what you’re doing, whom you’re with, where you are, evokes love without your thinking about it. You are totally absorbed in the place or person or event, without ego and without judgment.”
— Jean Shinoda Bolen

A Note from the Universe

The advanced soul learns to be honest with self and discovers that “perspective” rules, yet changes swiftly.

The Master, however, studies honesty in terms of motivation, where heretofore the lies have really piled up!

So, what do you really, really, really want and why?

Victory
“The real and lasting victories are those of peace and not of war.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

The word victory is often associated with a competition, or battle. But a victory doesn’t have to mean that there’s a “winner” and a “loser.” A successful negotiation, where both parties feel that a fair resolution has been reached, is a victory. When peace reigns, that is a victory.

Inner Journey:

DO YOU OWN YOUR LIFE?

“The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
— Ken Hudgins

When we own our lives, we accept what we’ve inherited and the experiences we hold in our memories. We also claim our right to create new conditions if we’re not happy with what’s come before. We assume responsibility for changing what does not suit us. We acknowledge our own special talents and skills, and truly comprehend our right to enjoy the journey. In short, we embrace the meaning and purpose, the mystery and the beauty of our lives.

Do you feel that you own your life at the moment?

Illusion
“Our greatest illusion is to believe that we are what we think ourselves to be.”

-Henry Amiel (1821-1881)

Who do we think we are? We go around acting like human do-ings, with families, jobs, cars, mortgages. But is this our reality, or is it an illusion, a play? There’s an ancient Indian saying that explains that we are actually spiritual beings having a human experience. Let’s think of ourselves from that perspective, and see how things change for us

Sweep ye circle, deosil,
Sweep out evil, sweep out ill,
Make the round of the ground
Where we do the Lady’s will.

Besom, besom, Lady’s broom
Sweep out darkness, sweep out doom
Rid ye Lady’s hallowed ground
Of demons, imps and Hell’s red hound;

Daily Good: Wild Mind: Reclaiming Our Original Wholeness

Our human psyches possess, as capacities, a variety of astonishing resources about which mainstream Western psychology has little to say. By uncovering and reclaiming these innate resources, shared by all of us by simple virtue of our human nature, we can more easily understand and resolve our intrapsychic and interpersonal difficulties as they arise. These resources, the four facets of the Self, or the four dimensions of our human wholeness, wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them, cultivate their powers, and integrate them into our everyday lives. There’s a facet of the Self associated with each of the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. Describing the Self in this way is in keeping with traditions around the world that have mapped human nature onto the template of the four directions (and the closely related templates of the four seasons and the four times of day: sunrise, noon, sunset, and midnight). { read more }

Community

“People had changed – or rather fridges had changed them. Mrs. Munde felt that being able to store food for longer periods had broken down the community spirit. There was no need to share now, no need to meet every day, gathering your veg or killing a few rabbits.”

-Jeannette Winterson, Boating for Beginners, 1985

Communities can form out of necessity, but also out of common interests or goals. Now we just seem to have more choices. We may not need community for our physical survival, but we do need it for our well-being. We gravitate toward each other, and to communities where we can help and support each other in various ways.
