Inner Journey: DO YOU OWN YOUR LIFE?

“The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
— Ken Hudgins

When we own our lives, we accept what we’ve inherited and the experiences we hold in our memories. We also claim our right to create new conditions if we’re not happy with what’s come before. We assume responsibility for changing what does not suit us. Weacknowledge our own special talents and skills, and truly comprehend our right to enjoy the journey. In short, we embrace the meaning and purpose, the mystery and the beauty of our lives.

Do you feel that you own your life at the moment?

“I think of life itself now as a wonderful play that I’ve written for myself… and so my purpose is to have the utmost fun playing my part.”
— Shirley MacLaine

— Benjamin Disraeli

Sleep
“Oh sleep! It is a gentle thing,
Beloved from pole to pole!”

-Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834)

It’s morning, but do you feel like you want to go back to bed now? When we sleep well, we feel refreshed, and we can take on the day so much more enthusiastically. We all need sleep, it is a part of being alive! And we do enjoy it – the whole routine of going to bed, getting comfortable. This is a ritual we need to acknowledge and honor. We can prepare ourselves for the night’s rest, rather than falling asleep in front of the TV. Take some time to settle in, calm down, and drift off gently and peacefully. Have you ever seen a cat sleep? Cats love their sleep – they relish it, they totally give in to it.

Daily Good: The Emotional Life of Animals

Any animal lover knows how intelligent our four-footed friends are, and how many emotions they share with us–especially the positive ones. And now scientific research tells us they have sensory and motor abilities that dwarf ours. Dogs are able to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes and warn humans of impending heart attacks and strokes. Elephants, whales, hippopotamuses, giraffes, and alligators use low-frequency sounds to communicate over long distances, often miles. And bats, dolphins, whales, frogs, and various rodents use high-frequency sounds to find food, communicate with others, and navigate. Read on for empathy among elephants and chimpanzee waterfall dances. { read more }

Inner Journey:

SMILE!

“Smile, it’s free therapy.”
— Doug Horton

I’ve learned that if I put a smile on my face when I’m feeling down, my spirits will automatically lift. The body knows that a smile means happiness.

Knowing this doesn’t mean I’m always willing to do it. Many times, I have absolutely refused to cheer myself up. Isn’t that interesting!

It’s a clue that sometimes the ego positively enjoys being miserable. It can be enlightening to explore the pay-offs we get from our black moods.

“Depend upon it that if a man talks of his misfortunes there is something in them that is not disagreeable to him; for where there is nothing but pure misery there is never any recourse to the mention of it.”
— Samuel Johnson

A Note from the Universe

So very much can happen in a lifetime, or even on a single day of any lifetime. Yet I can assure you that whatever has or will happen in yours, no matter what chasms you cross, heights you scale, or how many people you love and are loved by, when all is said and done and you take that final look over your shoulder, what will humble you the very most, will be that you got to be you.

Past

“It is not that I belong to the past, but that the past belongs to me.”

-Mary Antin, 1912

This is such a beautiful way to put it. We don’t want to live in the past, but we are aware that the past has helped to create the life that we live today. I think most people, given the opportunity, would not change their pasts, even if it was a horrible time to live through. Because people who have had such experiences understand that their strength and resolve, and maybe even their optimism and appreciation of life, came from getting through those challenges. Everything that we have done, all the life that we have lived up to this point, has made us the people that we are today.

Be organized and perform your tasks well, but also find those quiet instances when you can make sense of your feelings and impressions. You can get a great deal done today, and feel inwardly satisfied about it.
