October’s face, benign and mellow,
Turns nuts to brown and leaves to yellow;
But (like the Scorpion, sting in tail)
He ends with frost and scourging hail.
–Jan Struther (1901–53)

Spirit Library: A Deeper Meaning (a message from Kate Spreckley)

As the world dramatically changes we able to recognize that our habitual way of being no longer works. As a result, we are urged to find new, more authentic ways of living and being. Currently our focus is being driven inward, which can be challenging as we feel the need to manifest immediate changes in our lives. This inward journey will bring us new insights and the clarity we need to move forward.

Daily Good: Shelter for the Heart and Mind

Vulnerability in the face of constant change is what we share, whatever our present condition. Sharon Salzberg –

Shelter for the Heart and Mind

“How can we keep walking forward, and even find renewal along the way, in this year of things blown apart? How can we hold to our sense of what is whole and true and undamaged, even in the face of loss? These are some of the questions Sharon Salzberg, a renowned teacher of meditation and Buddhist practices, has been taking up in virtual retreats this year, which have helped ground many on hard days. She teaches how to stay present to the world while learning kindness toward yourself.” Read Krista Tippett’s interview with Sharon Salzberg here. { read more }

Today’s DIY: DIY Soy Candles

They set a mood, warm up a room, and just look pretty on a shelf. But many types of candles also have a dark history — they’re made from animal byproducts (beeswax, tallow), or they emit toxic soot, or they increase CO2 levels in the atmosphere.

Elephant Journal: Letting Go of Attachment to People—the Buddhist Way.

According to Buddhism, all our struggles stem from attachment.
I chuckled the first time I heard this. How is it possible that all my problems are because of attachment? As I scrutinized my life, I realized it was true. My arguments with others emanated from attachment to my opinions.

For many, the word “waterfall” conjures a distinct image of an idyllic, semi-secret place that can be accessed only by committing to an arduous hike through the woods. This, of course, isn’t always the case.

Inner Journey: FREE TO CHOOSE

“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.”
— Sigmund Freud

In his book Nobody’s Victim, Christopher J. McCullough explains, “In order to live your freedom, you must first accept reality. ‘These are the choices, and given those choices, which do I choose?’ Whether the option you select is pleasant or painful does not alter the fact that, given reality, this is your preference.

“To live your freedom, it is helpful to stop and ask yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ and then notice whether, given the options, you are choosing what you really want, or whether you want to choose something else…. Sometimes the exercise of freedom involves naming your poison — all choices may lead to outcomes that are in some way painful. But the real pain is that of feeling powerless — denying your freedom.”

“Freedom is man’s capacity to take a hand in his own development. It is our capacity to mold ourselves.”
— Dr. Rollo May

A Note from the Universe

However safe you might think you are right now, you are even safer.

However much you might think you are loved and guided right now, you are loved and guided even more.

And however likely you feel your future happiness is to blossom, let me assure you, it is, in fact, inevitable. Eternally.

It’s simply that from within the jungles of time and space none of what I just shared is obvious, even as I hold you in the palm of my hand, because you’ve accepted what is unquestionably the single most daunting challenge I’ve ever imagined: to forget that we are one.

Good on you,

The Universe

Daily Wisdom
October 26, 2020

“If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world, and that his heart is no island cut off from other lands, but a continent that joins to them.”

-Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

A citizen of the world. Yes! We are all in this together – no boundaries, no territories. We owe it to each other to show courtesy. In this way we are recognizing our heart connection. And our courtesy needs to extend to our friends and family, as well as strangers. Sometimes we take for granted that our family sits at the table with us and we don’t think about our behavior. But it is so important to be kind and gracious both outside our homes and inside our homes.

-Lissa Coffey

Daily Tarot: The Wheel of Fortune

It could be hard to sit still today and every little distraction may look more like an invitation to take a break or start the next thing. Get a lot done anyway by concentrating on short tasks and short conversations. A checklist helps keep things smooth and organized. Afterward, maybe take a nice long walk, stretch those legs, and shake the day’s dust off your shoulders.
