Senate honored Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, by changing the name of their month “Sextilis” to “Augustus.” Middle English speakers inherited the name of the month of August, but it wasn’t until the mid-1600s that “august” came to be used generically in English, more or less as “augustus” was in Latin, to refer to someone with imperial qualities.

Spirituality & Health: The Spiritual Meaning of Midsummer by Megan Shoop-Volz
Try this mini-ritual for midsummer, when nature teaches us to rest and be patient.
Though technically the pagan holiday of midsummer (called “Litha”) has passed, midsummer celebrations and activities in mid-July and early August feel right. This is when summer has truly set in—mature dragonflies are skimming the water, bees of various kinds bob from blossom to blossom, and all of nature seems to laze under the sun’s steady, unbroken heat.

Inner Journey: REFLECT ON YOUR LIFE
“Reflection is one of the most underused yet powerful tools for success.”
— Richard Carlson
Regularly, take time to reflect on what has been happening in your life. Step back to work ON your life instead of IN it. See yourself as the C.E.O. of your own personal company, or as the captain of your own ship. Are you navigating the waves as well as you might?
Stepping back helps us see a bigger, more inclusive picture. Small events make more sense in the bigger scheme of things.
“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.”
— James Levin

Waiting
“There is a difference between the waiting of the prophet and the standing still of the fool.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
This is an issue we all struggle with at one time or another. It can be difficult to wait, it can be difficult to be patient. And yet, it is so often necessary! Everything has its own time, its own season, and more often than not we are the ones who have to adjust to fit in with the grand plan. But waiting doesn’t have to mean standing still, or wasting time. We can use our time wisely, even when we are waiting.

Daily Tarot: The Devil
Your instincts may be heightened and a bit off today, and this could lead you to make some wrong decisions or assumptions. Then, you run the risk of pouncing on these assumptions and acting out of a bad impulse. Keep your emotions under control and back away from impulsive actions of any kind. Today they are traps that lead to embarrassment at best, and harm at worst.
