Compassion

“It is the experience of touching the pain of others that is the key to change… Compassion is a sign of transformation.”

-Jim Wallis

Compassion is not limited to the human experience. Although, as intelligent beings, we can understand and express compassion and extend comfort to one another. My friend Maryanne sent me an article about a herd of elephants who appeared to be mourning one of their own who had died. They cried. I don’t know if elephants can understand with their minds just what they were experiencing, but they certainly were able to understand with their hearts. And we can empathize with them, we can project our own feelings of loss onto this situation and learn and grow from it.

EarthSky News: How can I see a green flash?

People tell me when I go to the beach to look at the sunset to try to see a green flash. What is a green flash?
The green flash is an optical phenomenon that you can see shortly after sunset or before sunrise. It happens when the sun is almost entirely below the horizon, with the barest edge of the sun – the upper edge – still visible. For a second or two, that upper rim of the sun will appear green in color. It’s a brief flash of the color green – the legendary green flash. It’s really quite exciting to see, especially if you’ve been looking for one.

BALANCE MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL

“What is [the role of money] in the search for meaning? Is our relationship to it one of the chief factors that keeps us in our prison, or could it also be a tool for breaking out, for awakening to a life filled with intensity of purpose?”
— Jacob Needleman

Our personality has a need for security. As a human in a material world, we need money to survive. If we don’t have enough for basics, our lives cannot function. At the same time, with too much emphasis on the material, we lose the spiritual awareness that brings meaning and fulfillment. The key lies in the balance.

What draws most of your attention, time and energy: spiritual growth or money? Reflect on (or better yet, journal on) the balance or lack of balance of these two in your life.

“Money is not required to buy one necessity of the soul.”
— Henry David Thoreau

“View money and things not as something you create to fill a lack, but as tools to help you more fully express yourself and realize your potential.”
— Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

Energy
“The worshipper of energy is too physically energetic to see that he cannot explore certain higher fields until he is still.”

-Clarence Day (1874-1935)

Since I have been teaching meditation, many people have said to me: “I can’t meditate, I have too much energy!” Energy can be our ally, it gives us the vitality we need to accomplish, to excel. And yet, if we can’t tame our energy enough to allow ourselves to sit still and just be, then that energy can be counterproductive. Yes, energy is good! And we can make much better use of it when we spend some time in silence.

Inner Journey:

STEP INTO SELF-AWARENESS

“Getting in touch with your true self must be your first priority.”
— Tom Hopkins

Here are some different aspects of self-awareness:
• Know yourself – Explore who you are: your defences, your blocks, your talents, your aspirations, etc.
• Accept yourself – We are at war with ourselves when we resist or deny certain aspects of who we are. Acknowledge the truth of who you are right now – the positives and the negatives. Only when we own our present reality can we change.
• Control yourself – Set clear, conscious intentions and discipline yourself to meet them.
• Express yourself – Go to your heart to identify what has meaning and purpose for you. Live your truth. Identify ways you can give back to life and be in service.

We work on each of these aspects all the time. But as our lives go through cycles, we predominantly work on one of them more than the others. Which aspect are you more conscious of lately?

“Our lives improve only when we take chances … and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves.”
— Walter Anderson

“Adventure can be an end in itself. Self-discovery is the secret ingredient that fuels daring.”
— Grace Lichtenstein

Character

“It is not in the still calm of life, or the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed… The habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties. All history will convince you of this, and that wisdom and penetration are the fruit of experience, not the lessons of retirement and leisure. Great necessities call out great virtues.”
-Abigail Adams, in a letter to her son, John Quincy Adams, 1780

“Character” is an interesting word. We’re all known for our character, those traits that we have embraced and exhibited as a part of who we are. In the movie and theatre world, a character is one of the participants in the film, or play – and since we have little time to get to know that individual, his personality is amplified by a few traits that sets him apart from the other characters. If you were to write a play, and write yourself into this story, how would your character be portrayed?

LEARN TO BE AWARE

“You can live a lifetime and, at the end of it, know more about other people than you know about yourself.”
— Beryl Markham

Who am I? To answer this, we must first learn to become more aware of ourselves. To be aware, we must STOP and PAY ATTENTION! We need to STOP and objectively watch ourselves in action.

We live most of our lives by habit. These habits keep us stuck in patterns that limit our experience of life. Once we detect a pattern we were previously unconscious of, we can choose differently, if we want. With awareness comes choice and with choice, we gain freedom.

Patheos-Pagan: Being a Positive Pagan in a Dark World

The world is rough nowadays. It seems like it’s increasingly harder to be positive. Between drama, in-fighting, people lashing out behind computer screens, people suffering publicly, traumatizing life events, disease, the world as it is today…that list is long and seemingly growing longer.

IT’S OKAY TO DREAM!

“Don’t discard your fantasies as merely wishful thinking. Honor them as messages from the deepest part of your being about what you can do and directions you can choose.”
— Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

What are your deepest heart-felt desires, dreams and visions?

Our deepest desires and dreams align with the essence of who we are. The more we align with that essence, the more our life holds meaning, purpose and fulfilment. Do you have a sense of your destiny?

“Dreams are renewable. No matter what our age or condition, there are still untapped possibilities within us and new beauty waiting to be born.”
— Dale E. Turner

“Everybody builds a dream in their lifetime. You’re either going to build your dream, or somebody else’s. So build your own!”

You’re here because you prevailed. You saw clearly. Strong in spirit, deep in character, and fast to fall in love. And for these extraordinary qualities, anything you can now imagine you’ve already earned.

Herbal Muse: Lavender & Oat Bath Bombs

These little jewels are fun to use and lend wonderful fragrance to the bath. The combination of baking soda, powdered lavender flowers and powdered oatstraw lend healing properties to sooth the skin and frazzled nerves. You can use candy or small soap molds for this project, but for best results use the two-piece type of mold made specifically for this purpose (available from Amazon, craft supply stores, etc.) This recipe makes 6-8 bath bombs, depending on the size of your molds

Giving

A man there was, though some did count him mad,
The more he cast away, the more he had.”

-John Bunyan (1628-1688)

So many people have said the same thing: when you give, you receive. Whatever it is that you want in your life, give that. Somehow, it comes back to you, in a bigger and better way. Somehow, what you are looking for finds you. You have to put it out there; it has to circulate. Rather than hold on to something, set it free. Let it live, let it breathe, let it grow. Giving is good for everyone.

Daily Good: Embracing the Great Fullness of Life

“We all have our ideas about how life should go. Ideas painted within us as hopes, longings, opinions. Those painted around us as cultural norms, trajectories, worthwhile goals. We have ideas in mind about most everything how our bodies should work, how love should work, how the world should work. Politics. Sleep. Weather. What we want and do not want. Ideas that make things bad or good, yes or no. And while these concepts can offer us valuable guidance about how we might approach life, they can also obscure and conflict with the vast majority of what is actually unfolding and is bound to unfold in our moment-to-moment, unpredictable lives and world.”

Inner Journey:

LOVE YOURSELF

“It’s surprising how many persons go through life without ever recognizing that their feelings toward other people are largely determined by their feelings toward themselves, and if you’re not comfortable within yourself, you can’t be comfortable with others.”
— Sydney J. Harris

“We have the need to be accepted and to be loved by others, but we cannot accept and love ourselves. The more self-love we have, the less we will experience self-abuse. Self-abuse comes from self-rejection, and self-rejection comes from having an image of what it means to be perfect and never measuring up to that ideal. Our image of perfection is the reason we reject ourselves the way we are, and why we don’t accept others the way they are.”
— Don Miguel Ruiz

“There is no freedom like seeing myself as I am and not losing heart.”
— Elizabeth J. Canham

“If we could learn to like ourselves, even a little, maybe our cruelties and angers might melt away.”

Spirituality

“Peace is a necessary condition of spirituality, no less than an inevitable result of it.”

-Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)
Peace is reason enough for each of us to pursue our spirituality, and to encourage and support others who wish to do so, also. We experience inner peace through prayer, meditation, and spiritual activity. And that peace radiates outwards to affect our homes and communities. The more of us who live spiritually, the more peace there will be in the world!

Spirituality & Health: Fall in Love with Being Single
BY KATHRYN DRURY WAGNER

The feast of St. Valentine is February 14th, a day when all things heart-shaped and chocolate-covered are celebrated. Valentine’s Day can rub some people the wrong way, especially if they are single in a culture that is bent on making everyone part of a “happy couple.” Being single, however, has many perks. Let’s look at some of the reasons to embrace being single, if you happen to be.

Daily Good: On Defining Spirit

“What then is the spiritual? I find it difficult to define directly. It’s much easier to say what it isn’t that what it is. For example — the spiritual is often confused with the moral, but it’s not the moral. Morality is concerned with issues of right and wrong. Although often attributed to the “godhead”, it actually has a social basis and reflects a social tradition or consensus. What is considered moral varies from culture to culture and from time to time within the same culture.

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

“The burden is equal to the horse’s strength.”
— The Talmud

What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?

If you make a list of the two and study them, you may discover they match.

Life needs us to bring our strengths to the world. To encourage us to do so, we have weaknesses that give rise to problems that require us to call on our strengths to solve them. Ingenious, don’t you think?

“Our weaknesses are divine gifts that when embraced will enable us to make our purposeful contribution to the whole, which is why we incarnated in the first place.”
