Daily Good: This Is Your Brain On Music
“Musical training doesn’t just improve your ear for music — it also helps your ear for speech. That’s the takeaway from an unusual new study published in The Journal of Neuroscience. Researchers found that kids who took music lessons for two years didn’t just get better at playing the trombone or violin; they found that playing music also helped kids’ brains process language.” { read more }

MNN: Why dark sky tourism is catching on
In the fight to protect natural wonders around the world from pollution, development and other man-made byproducts of our modern world, it’s an overlooked fact that we’re on the verge of losing one of our most enchanting. Even more ironic, it’s not something that requires travel or tickets to experience. The night sky — a free, all-access glowing spectacle — has been tamed by humanity to the point where 83% of the world’s population now live under light polluted skies.

EarthSky News: Start watching for Ursid meteors
Tonight – December 17, 2019 – marks what might be your first night for seeing meteors in the annual Ursid meteor shower. This shower typically peaks around the December solstice, which, in 2019, comes on December 21 or 22, depending on your time zone. The shower’s peak morning is probably December 22, but any of the next few mornings should yield some Ursids as well. The meteor shower usually ends around December 26.

Patheos-Pagan: Dance of the Maenad: The Faery Path
The faery path is winding and laden with poison fruits, plants both baneful and healing. The leaves clinging to twisted oak branches chime like bells as they sway, the wood creaking like a violin. The air itself is intoxicating, shimmering, undulating.

Inner Journey:
DISTINGUISH PERSONALITY DESIRES FROM SOUL NEEDS
“Human history is the sad result of each one looking out for himself.”
— Julio Cortazar
We indulge ourselves when we seek to meet our longings through desires of the personality. We indulge ourselves when we buy more clothes to make us happy, when we eat another snack to ease the hunger, when we have an affair to feel powerful or loveable. Any pleasure we get, if we get any at all, is shallow and short-lived.
The only lasting satisfaction can come from meeting the deep spiritual needs of the soul. We discover what we are really after in life when we identify the spiritual qualities and needs that lie behind our desires for material pleasures.
“But life lived only for oneself does not truly satisfy men or women. There is a hunger in Americans today for larger purposes beyond the self.”
— Betty Friedan

A Note from the Universe
Heaven forbid! Do you really think I’d let you go to a place where you couldn’t find new friends, laughter, health, and abundance of every sort? Where you couldn’t be happy about something every single day? Where you would be limited, stuck, or unable to change your circumstances?
Do you even think such a place might exist?
Not in a zillion years.

Environment
“I had assumed that the Earth, the spirit of the Earth, noticed exceptions – those who wantonly damage it and those who do not. But the Earth is wise. It has given itself into the keeping of all, and all are therefore accountable.”
-Alice Walker, 1988
That really is the way it works, isn’t it? The Earth can’t differentiate one person from another, because we’re all one! So, what one of us does affects all of us. We’re all in this together; we can’t afford to be selfish. We have to keep the “big picture” in mind at all times.

Daily Tarot: The Hanged Man
Things may not be going the way you like, but this is no time to give up. Whatever went wrong yesterday or last year is no excuse to stop trying to make things right. Be honest with yourself and do what you can to at least not make matters worse. There’s nothing that can’t be forgiven, repaired or replaced. Keep the faith and keep going.
