Senate honored Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, by changing the name of their month “Sextilis” to “Augustus.” Middle English speakers inherited the name of the month of August, but it wasn’t until the mid-1600s that “august” came to be used generically in English, more or less as “augustus” was in Latin, to refer to someone with imperial qualities.

Daily Good: Moon Tree

We are going to the moon that is not very far. Man has so much farther to go within himself.

  • Anais Nin –

Moon Tree

“In 1971, more than four hundred tree seeds were collected and ensconced in an aluminum canister. They were chosen from across the United States: the resinous sweet gum and mud-loving southern loblolly; the northwestern Douglas fir, green and mossy; the sycamore leafing over mid-western flood plains; and the coastal redwood, stretching along the sandy loam of the Pacific. For all the preparations involved, NASA’s plan was simple at its heart: let’s see how they handle this journey.” { read more }

August Birthstone : Peridot

Birthstone Color: Yellow Green

If fire appears to leap from the vibrant green surface of the Peridot, this may be because this gem is formed as a result of volcanic activity. Many years ago, natives discovered Peridot crystals in the black sands of Hawaii, explaining their presence as tears shed by Pele, the volcano goddess.

Inner Journey: HEALTH AND HELP

“More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones.”
— Mother Teresa

If we are prompted to ask for spiritual blessings for ourselves or others, how do we best do this?

Speaker Kimberly Herkert offers that it is best to simply ask the divine for health and help. As human beings, we are not capable of seeing the big picture for anyone’s situation. As a result, we are not able to judge what is best for anyone, including ourselves.

The Higher Power always knows best, and the general prayer for ‘health and help’ acknowledges the wisdom that exists there and our faith in divine will.

“God answers prayer in His own way, not ours.”
— Mohandas Gandhi

Daily Wisdom
August 2, 2021

“Victory comes, at times, just when one no longer expects it.”

-Martin Buber (1878-1965)

Have you ever had those times where you’re trying to think of a word, or a person’s name, and no matter how much you search your brain you can’t seem to find it? And then later, when you relax, when you’ve given up and let it go, it comes flooding back to you clear as day! That’s the law of detachment at work. Whatever you are striving for, release and let it go, then it is free to be yours.

-Lissa Coffey
