Senate honored Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, by changing the name of their month “Sextilis” to “Augustus.” Middle English speakers inherited the name of the month of August, but it wasn’t until the mid-1600s that “august” came to be used generically in English, more or less as “augustus” was in Latin, to refer to someone with imperial qualities.

Spirit Library: Lion’s Gate Closing (a message from Kate Spreckley)

Today we come to the close of this year’s Lion’s Gate portal which opened on the 26th of July and ushered in some powerful waves of cosmic energy. The transformative power of this energy is moving into every facet of our lives and will leave nothing unchanged. We must remember that at this time we are walking between worlds, between the old and the new, the past and the future and as such we are required to constantly realign and refocus our awareness and our attention in the present moment.

Daily Good: Rising from the Fire

If you look in the eyes of the young, you see flame. If you look in the eyes of the old, you see light

  • Victor Hugo –

Rising from the Fire

“How can we reconcile the immensely destructive force of fire with its equally limitless creative potential? Forest managers light intentional blazes to clear overgrowth and begin anew the cycle of life. A fireplace becomes a hearth, offering heat, light, and survival for the homes residents. And fiery volcanic activity can obliterate what stands in its path all the while creating new land in a matter of hours and days that becomes highly fertile soil in thousands or millions of years. The element of fire–and its life-giving results in the form of heat and light–represent both a powerful metaphor and an undeniable fact of organic and spiritual transformation. Evelyn Underhill, in her classic book Mysticism, states unambiguously ‘No transmutation without fire.’ And ‘Here, as elsewhere…the self must lose to find and die to live.'” { read more }

Be The Change

What are some of the experiences of fire, literal or metaphorical in your own life? Take a moment to reflect on how they have transformed you. Ask someone in your community about their own pivotal experiences of being “fire-tested.”

Inner Journey:

“A critic is a legless man who teaches running.”
— Channing Pollock

Are you aware of your inner critic? We all have this voice that tells us we are bad, stupid, clumsy, cowardly…. Although its intent is to help us succeed, the harsh self talk of our critic just serves to drain our energy and lower our morale and immune system.

To defuse the inner critic, we need to recognize when the critic is speaking. We need to know that this voice does not necessarily speak for who we really are. This is an old pattern that may no longer be serving us. We want to open to the possibility that the words are not likely true. We can ask ourselves, “Are these words helpful?”

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
— Eleanor Roosevelt

“Abilities wither under faultfinding, blossom with encouragement.”
— Donald A. Laird

“Never react emotionally to criticism. Analyze yourself to determine whether it is justified. If it is, correct yourself. Otherwise, go on about your business.”
— Norman Vincent Peale

A Note from the Universe

There are some things that are best forgotten. And when I remember what a few of them are, I’ll drop you a line. But a couple of things worth remembering, that are all too easily forgotten, are the times in your life when you felt absolutely alone and uncertain. Yet somehow, perhaps beyond perception, there was a great click, after which suddenly a new friend appeared, an idea was imparted, or a connection established, causing the tides to turn and the floodgates to open.

And remembering this, should such “alone and uncertain times” ever revisit, however dark they may seem, you’ll at least be comforted by recalling how transient they always are.

Pass it on,

The Universe

Daily Wisdom
August 13, 2021

“You can preach a better sermon with your life than with your lips.”

-Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774)

There’s another saying that talk is cheap. Sure, it’s easy to say something, but it takes time and effort to take action on it. Live life by example. We can’t just say that we’re “into the environment” and then go around driving SUVs and eating out of non-recyclable Styrofoam. Our actions give our words their meaning, and make them carry more weight.

-Lissa Coffey

Daily Tarot: The Lovers

Indecision is not necessarily a bad thing, but taken to extremes it can make you pessimistic and defeatist. Take the time you need to make the choices you need but don’t get bogged down and grind to a halt. Take yourself in hand and refuse to feel helpless in the face of a challenging (or tempting) situation. Refuse to be rushed by anyone, too
