Inner Journey:

ACCEPTING REALITY

“…self-contempt never inspires lasting change.”
— Jane R. Hirschmann and Carol H. Munter

I can suck myself down into a deep, black hole when I focus on what I think I SHOULD be… more loving, sexy, productive, whatever. Thinking I should be something else means I’m not good enough now. This is poverty thinking and a guaranteed way to be miserable.

I can let go of this suffering by accepting WHAT IS. I can say, “This is how I am right now and that’s okay.”

When I first tried this, I could say it but not believe it. Then I began to experience the freedom this perspective brings – just by changing my mind! Now I’m beginning to believe it. What a gift!

“When we stop opposing reality, action becomes simple, fluid, kind, and fearless.”
— Byron Katie

A Note from the Universe

It’s as if, when moving from point A to point B in your life — from sickness to health, poverty to wealth, whatever – at some point in the journey, arriving at point B becomes inevitable, a sure thing. However, at no point in your journey is this physically verifiable — until you reach point B.

The point being (yuck, yuck), you may have already crossed that line. But you’ll never know it, unless you see the journey through.

Animals

“Animals are such agreeable friends — they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.”

-George Eliot, 1857

The animals we are most familiar with are our pets. At some point in our lives, I’m sure we’ve all had at least one pet. I certainly have had quite a few, and I learned something from each and every one of them. Suki is the cat who lives with us right now. I can’t really call her “mine” because she is very much her own cat! There is an unconditional love that happens between pets and companions; it’s very comforting. If only we could all be such agreeable friends.

You’ve had your share of fun, and now it’s time to face the consequences. You probably knew what you were doing when you did it, but now that it’s time to pay the piper, you may have serious regrets. What’s more important: maintaining a close relationship, or perusing every opportunity for passion with reckless abandon? The decision is easy.

Elephant Journal: Full Moon in Fiery Leo Ignites Relationships: 3 Practices to Embrace your Fire. (February 9th)

Can you easily see the moon phases from where you live?
Sometimes I envy those prairie dwellers with big skies. I live among a series of small mountains and buildings which obstruct the view of the moon, and then there’s clouds and fog, because of my elevation. I especially love seeing moonrise, when it looms big over the horizon before it settles into the night sky. That’s when I really feel its magic.

Inner Journey:

BIG MIND, LITTLE MIND

“It is the mind that makes one wise or ignorant, bound or emancipated.”
— Sri Ramakrishna
Zen distinguishes big mind from small mind. Big mind identifies with its process, is impersonal and participates universally. Big mind is unlimited possibilities, deeper understanding, forgiveness, acceptance, insight, connectedness, attention.
Small mind is self centred and focuses only on itself. It is compulsive, limited, reactive and mechanical. Small mind feeds on itself — fear reacts to fear, judgment reacts to judgment, anger sparks more anger.
Always seek higher perspectives and you will in time find freedom.
“If a pickpocket meets a Holy Man, he will see only his pockets.”
— Hari Dass
“Minds are like parachutes; they work best when open.”
— Lord Thomas Dewar

Courage

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”

-Anais Nin (1903-1977)

The amount of courage that we have depends on the way that we see ourselves. Remember the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz? He went to see the Wizard because he did not like being cowardly – he wanted the Wizard to give him courage. And yet, just by setting out on the journey, taking that step forward into the unfamiliar, took a great deal of courage! And all along the way, the lion was put into situations where he could demonstrate his courage – and he did, without even realizing it! It takes until the end of the story for the lion to see that his courage was with him all the time. And with that discovery, his life expanded.

Although it may be a peaceful day, that calm may all be on the surface. If dissatisfaction or anger is brewing at depth, there could be thoughts or fantasies of revenge or anger to fuel the bad feelings. Face everyone and everything with great care and respect. You have more than enough strength to deal with whatever comes up. Obviously, don’t bait or antagonize anyone. Kindness wins
