Inner Journey: DEEPER COMMUNICATION

“Once a human being has arrived on this earth, communication is the largest single factor determining what kinds of relationships he makes with others and what happens to him in the world about him.”
— Virginia Satir

How do you typically communicate? Is it through words, gestures, emotions, thoughts, desires, needs, truths, direct perception or intuition? Do you focus more on the other person or on yourself? Do you typically tell, ask or listen?

For a few days, set an intention to be aware of your communication styles and skills. After you’ve spent some time talking with someone, reflect on what your underlying motives were and what level of depth you reached. Write your insights in your journal. This exercise will help you become more aware and conscious of who you are and why you do what you do.

Inner Journey: SUPPORT OTHERS WITH YOUR PRESENCE

“The purpose of therapy is not to remove suffering but TO MOVE THROUGH IT to an enlarged consciousness that can sustain the polarity of painful opposites.”
— James Hollis

How do we support others who are suffering?

When we understand how soul works through us, we begin to see how pain generates the impulse to change. We see that our aim in supporting someone is NOT to get rid of their pain and suffering. Instead, we want to assist them to understand what the pain istrying to teach them — to find meaning in their distress.

Often, all we need do is be fully present to them. It also helps to be present to our own experience and genuine in our feelings. Living our own truth helps create the space for the other person to live theirs.

Study
“Study the teachings of the Great Sages of all sects impartially.”

-Gampopa (C.E. 12th cent.)

All of the Great Sages would say the same thing. Would a Sage be a Sage if he or she said: “I know everything, look no further”? No! We’d laugh! The brightest, most intelligent people know that there is always more to learn. They know that there is always knowledge to share. And they know that wisdom can be found anywhere, that there is not one particular place that we need to go to attain it. “Impartially” is a great word – without judgment, without bias – and with an open mind.

Finding Balance in an Unstable World

“The present pandemic, which in a few short months has wreaked havoc across our world, is most likely caused by an imbalance in the natural world, as loss of habitat and biodiversity is not only driving animals to extinction but directly causing animal viruses to spread to humans. In response our leaders are using the images of conflict: We are at war with Covid 19, we keep hearing; it is an invisible enemy we need to vanquish. But although this virus is disrupting our lives, causing sickness, death, and economic breakdown, it is itself a completely natural phenomenon, a living thing reproducing itself in the way nature intended. Are these images of conflict and conquest appropriate or even helpful? Do they help us to understand and to respond, to bring our world back into balance?” Sufi master Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee shares more on finding balance in an unstable world. { read more }

It’s hard for some of us to believe that the world is served when we seek our own happiness. We’ve been taught that this is selfish.

If we stop to reflect on how we are in the world when we are happy, we can see how this serves. We have more vitality. We’re more loving and generous to others when our own needs are met.

What activities bring you greatest joy? Your unique gift to the world will be found in those pastimes you love the most.

How can you live your joy each day?

Eternity
“What, to eternity, is a thousand years? Not so much as the blinking of an eye to the turning of the slowest of the spheres.”

Dante (A.D. 1265 – 1321)

A thousand years. Think of all the things that happen in what seems like this large amount of time. The changes that take place, the leaps and bounds made in progress, the contributions made by the people who lived during that time. And yet, some history books can sum up a century in a chapter of two! The more we move through time the more we have to write about. History may “repeat itself,” but we have something to learn from it each time. As we rack up the centuries, we have to wonder what the world will look like in a few more “blinks of an eye.

LISTEN TO YOUR HEART

“To know how to choose a path with heart is to learn how to follow intuitive feeling. Logic can tell you superficially where a path might lead to, but it cannot judge whether your heart will be in it.”
— Jean Shinoda Bolen

“When you have compassion and surrender to your own heart, you are surrendering to the hidden power in your heart, God. You are surrendering to love, because God is Love, the cohesive force of the universe that connects us all. Surrender is not just a religious concept; it’s a power tool for listening to the voice of your spirit and following its directions. When you surrender your head to your heart, you allow your heart to give you a wider, higher intelligence perspective. Remember the phrase, ‘The real teacher is within you.’ Very simply, that teacher is to be found in the common sense of your own heart.”
— Sara Paddison

“Surrender is faith that the power of love can accomplish anything… even when you can not foresee the outcome.”

A Note from the Universe

The following is NOT wishful thinking, it’s the simple truth:

Once you form a desire for something to have or experience in your mind, it becomes a reality in the world of thoughts. Then, because THOUGHTS BECOME THINGS… that reality immediately goes to work looking for expression somewhere in your vicinity. To help this expression, understand that your job has already been done and that it’s time to let the Universe take over.

This doesn’t mean do nothing, but it does mean that you can stop worrying, stop calculating, and stop second-guessing, so that you can begin listening to the Universe through your own hunches and intuition.

You’re in good hands,

Daily Good: Kindness Is Everywhere

A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.

– Amelia Earhart –

Kindness Is Everywhere

“Let me tell you about Don. He’s a retired DC firefighter, about to turn 89, living alone in his Maryland apartment. Father of six, grandfather to a tribe, he’s an Irishman, and darn proud of it. Around the start of the pandemic, he dropped me a line out of the blue, a reader offering his take on my novel ‘Beneath the Same Stars’. Since then, we’ve struck up a fairly regular email correspondence. We share stories about family escapades, our bad knees, the loved ones we’ve lost and are losing, the dear ones who take care of us and bring us joy. We banter about politics and public health and books and the best way to cook broccoli.” So begins this brief yet potent exploration by Phyllis Cole-Dai on the power of kindness. { read more }

THE PUSH & PULL OF RELATIONSHIPS

“It’s surprising how many persons go through life without ever recognizing that their feelings toward other people are largely determined by their feelings toward themselves, and if you’re not comfortable within yourself, you can’t be comfortable with others.”
— Sydney J. Harris

Relationships are such a challenge because life pulls us in opposite directions at the same time.

Our personality feels the need to be unique and special and so our focus lies on how we are different from others. Differences hold the potential to create conflict.

At the same time, our souls live through connection with others. We are challenged to rise above our personal preferences to discover how we and the other are the same.

Our overall need lies in balancing these two tendencies.

“The purpose of relationships is not happiness, but transformation.”

-Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, 1893
I guess you could say that what comes around, goes around, and why not in a good way? Think of it as some kind of karmic bank account that keeps track of our good deeds. We don’t have to keep score, the universe takes note! So we don’t have to think about it, we just have to take action, help out, do our best to make the world a better place for all of us. It all works out.

As I was walking up the highest mountains in the world, I realized that I had a chance to actually ask a question of the old wise man in the cave. As I was walking, I contemplated what I should ask him that would be of benefit, not just for me, but for all of us because most people dont have the opportunity to ask a question of a 106-year-old Lama in a cave. Inner Journey:

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR EMOTIONS

“Emotions are the next frontier to be understood and conquered. To manage our emotions is not to drug them or suppress them, but to understand them so that we can intelligently direct our emotional energies and intentions…. It’s time for human beings to grow up emotionally, to mature into emotionally managed and responsible citizens. No magic pill will do it.”
— Doc Childre

Many of us believe that we need to keep a tight lid on our emotions. We fear that if we ever allow these emotions to be expressed, they will do serious damage.

But if we summon up the courage to truly feel our emotions, we discover that they don’t last. The monster in the closet turns out to be a pussycat. In fact, if we are willing to experience our emotions completely, without resistance of any kind, they burn themselves out in only a few minutes.

The only thing that keeps emotions alive within you over long periods is your unwillingness to acknowledge them.

“By starving emotions we become humorless, rigid and stereotyped; by repressing them we become literal, reformatory and holier-than-thou; encouraged, they perfume life; discouraged, they poison it.”
— Joseph Collins

The great web of life – this amazing connection that binds us together. These days when we hear “web” we think of the worldwide web. And this is a great analogy for how we can really move beyond space and time to experience our connection with one another. I had a service question recently, and ended up speaking with a technician in India! We had a great conversation. He solved my problem and I showed him my whatsyourdosha.com website. What the heck is my rising sign?
A lot of people newer to astrology are not completely familiar with a rising sign and even some of the more “well-seasoned” astrology nerds (yes, I am an astrology nerd) are still not entirely aware of just how much our rising sign can affect the whole of our natal charts (or “life map” as I like to refer to it).

TRANSFORMATION

“The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”
— William Faulkner

Longing for a miracle that will transform your life? Miracles happen, and if we don’t want that magic to disappear on us, we need to learn from each epiphany — to integrate it, apply it, and build on it so we can permanently shift to a new level of being.

The real key to fulfillment lies in ONGOING transformation: building our awareness of daily opportunities to change our perceptions and raise our consciousness. Life is about dissolving the old and creating anew. The more we open to accepting and learning from every life experience, the more our lives transform.

“Enlightenment must come little by little — otherwise it would overwhelm.”
— Idries Shah

Interdependence
“One life stamps and influences another, which in turn stamps and influences another, on and on, until the soul of human experience breathes on in generations we’ll never even meet.”

-Mary Kay Blakely, 1989

Yes, we are independent, as people and as a nation, and at the same time we are interdependent. We rely on each other. We support and sustain one another. Each person, independently, makes contributions that have far-reaching effects. It’s the pebble in the pond example, where the ripples are felt for a long time after the stone has landed

Possibly a romantically disquieting day, you may begin to suspect that your love is not being returned, at least not in kind. Or perhaps you can’t bring yourself to return the affections of an ardent admirer. This might feel even worse. The head and heart don’t always speak the same language or have the same opinions. Be strong and as kind as you can.

Inner Journey:

Slow down

“The soul requires duration of time — rich, thick, deep, velvety time — and it thrives on rhythm. Soul can’t be hurried or harried …. We may go through many events in the day and experience nothing because the soul has not had the opportunity to feel them from many different points of view.”
— Robert Sardello

Soul cannot exist when our connections in life remain superficial. An experience of soul requires that we take time to be fully present to the details of our lives.

Explore what happens when you take the time to STOP and PAY ATTENTION. When we choose to slow down and really experience the qualities of our lives, we get a whole new perspective on what living is all about.

“We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment of life is a miracle and mystery.”
— H. G. Wells

“The well of Providence is deep. It’s the buckets we bring to it that are small.”

A Note from the Universe

It took some craftiness to create the splendors you now live in because it all had to be done with the most exquisite balance, and in just such a way that you’d never, ever become bored.

Yeah, I had to throw in a few valleys so that you could truly appreciate the peaks. A few scaly, ugly, biting creatures, to make the others more adorable. Some slippery slopes, dangerous curves, and moving targets, to show you how agile, brilliant, and cunning you are. And some quicksand, tornadoes, and earthquakes, to help you appreciate a stolen nap, an evening stroll, and quiet times.

But perhaps, best of all, I had to dream up some pretty special people. You know, with perspectives and traits so unlike your own that sometimes it would seem your only means of surviving the relationship would be learning to love yourself, even more. Aren’t they a piece of work?

Tallyho,

Style
“To me style is just the outside of content, and content the inside of style, like the outside and inside of the human body – both go together, they can’t be separated.”

-Jean Luc Godard

In this quote Jean Luc Godard is talking about writing style in particular, but it can really be applied to any kind of style. We always hear: “You can’t judge a book by its cover” and yet, it happens all the time! Even if we don’t “judge” a book, or a person, by appearance, experience tells us that certain expectations have been set up for us. What does this mean to us spiritually? We understand that mind and body, inside and outside, are intricately linked. We need to take care of both. Our style reflects the person we are, it’s what the world experiences of us. The way we present ourselves is the way we see ourselves.

Inner Journey:

WHAT IS YOUR DESTINY?

“The significant business of your life is alive and well, awaiting discovery, within your very soul. You and I were born to come into ourselves as complete and distinctive persons. Accepting this, we build a valuable life.”
— Marsha Sinetar

What is the significant business of your life? What is your purpose? Andrew Schneider says that purpose “is more than just having a direction. It is about one’s place in the universe. It is the journey of finding that place and being there and living fully whatever that place is. It is your own unique place that nobody else has, had, or will have.”

How would you describe your place in the universe?

“We become powerful in the face of our fears when we have a sense that we make a difference in this world. Affirmations of purpose communicate the truth that we are all meaningful participants in this Universe and that we are worthy of giving and receiving love. Some affirmations of purpose are:

– I know that I count and I act as though I do.
– I spread warmth and love everywhere I go.
– I am a healing force in the Universe.”
— Susan Jeffers

“The grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.”

And while this may give you pause and have you wondering why you’ve not yet met with some of the successes you’ve sought, let it also empower you as you remember that the floodgates must fly open and the Kingdom must be revealed at the precise moment you release whatever else you might have felt or thought about it not working.
