MBG: Nobody Can Teach You Self-Awareness. Here’s How To Teach Yourself

I was raised in a communal environment—a tight community of women who bonded together to raise their children collectively. One of our regular practices was what the moms called Circle, and it centered around dream analysis. One person would explain a dream she’d had, and the rest of us would explore what that dream meant to us.

Daily Good: Odes to Ordinary Things

Inspired by the gift of a book of “Odes to Common Things” by Pablo Neruda, the editors at A Network for Grateful Living, extended an invitation to submit odes to “ordinary things.” The response was happy and immediate. Their inbox steadily filled with poems celebrating weeds, streetlights, shoes and crickets. There were love letters to a blender bottle, an acorn, slippers, an iPad — even to the veins on the top of someone’s feet! What follows is a selection of the poems they received. Poems that will delight your heart, and open your eyes to the myriad wonders that surround us all, waiting to be seen and celebrated. { read more }

Be The Change

Look around you and let your eyes come to rest on the very first thing you see. Take a moment to really “see” this thing in front of you. Write a small three-line poem of gratitude for the existence of this extraordinarily ordinary piece of the universe. Then share your poem with someone today

MNN: How to make rose water

You only need two ingredients to make rose water: rose petals and water. Yet, a four-ounce bottle of rose water can cost $10 or more. Making your own rose water is easy to do, and if you grow your own roses (or have a friend who can give you some roses) it’s free to make. (And even if you do buy some roses, it will still be less expensive.)

EarthSky News: Fight climate change with more swamps

“Drain the swamp” has long meant getting rid of something distasteful. Actually, the world needs more swamps – and bogs, fens, marshes and other types of wetlands.

These are some of the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. They also are underrated but irreplaceable tools for slowing the pace of climate change and protecting our communities from storms and flooding.

Patheos-Pagan: Everything Is Important But Everything Can’t Be First

Long time readers know I like to rant against the Evil Sorcerers of Madison Avenue – the advertising executives who do their best to convince you your life is worthless unless you buy what they’re selling. They use every magical technique short of demon invocation, and I’m not completely sure they don’t use that too.

Inner Journey:

APPRECIATION

“You can never get to peace and inner security without first acknowledging all of the good things in your life. If you’re forever wanting and longing for more without first appreciating things the way they are, you’ll stay in discord.”
— Doc Childre and Howard Martin

Develop an attitude of gratitude. We discover a sense of wholeness as we appreciate both the small and big things in our lives. And it really helps to remember to appreciate ourselves. Appreciation is more than just acceptance — it’s respect and admiration. Let go of criticism and self-abuse.

“Generally, appreciation means some blend of thankfulness, admiration, approval, and gratitude. In the financial world, something that ‘appreciates’ grows in value. With the power tool of appreciation, you get the benefit of both perspectives: as you learn to be consistently thankful and approving, your life will grow in value.”
— Doc Childre and Howard Martin

Relationships

“Seven years would be insufficient to make some people acquainted with each other, and seven days are more than enough for others.”

-Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility (1811)

There are some people we just “click” with. Maybe it’s love at first sight, maybe it’s some kind of karmic recognition. But when this happens, it is usually a sign to pay attention – that this is an important relationship. We are here for each other. There is so much for us to accomplish together here in this space and time, and we are brought together to do just that

Thoughtco: Lammas History: Welcoming the Harvest

At Lammas, also called Lughnasadh, the hot days of August are upon us, much of the earth is dry and parched, but we still know that the bright reds and yellows of the harvest season are just around the corner. Apples are beginning to ripen in the trees, our summer vegetables have been picked, corn is tall and green, waiting for us to come gather the bounty of the crop fields. Now is the time to begin reaping what we have sown, and gathering up the first harvests of grain, wheat, oats, and more.

MBG: A Mantra To Help You Own Your Feminine Energy (Regardless Of Your Gender)

Real talk: I don’t think the future is female.

Hear me out. This catchy phrase implies implies that there’s an inherent imbalance between female and male, and such labels and categorizations serve to only further divide us. Truly positive change can come only when we are all-encompassing rather than exclusive.

Daily Good: A Heartmindfulness Revolution

From a young age, the current mode of education encourages us to develop our intellects and to find success by getting a prestigious job, making large sums of money and acquiring things. But what happens when the mind is sharp but the heart is neglected and becomes numb? The unfortunate outcome is seen all around us in a culture rife with attitudes and technology that dehumanizes our most basic sense of goodness.

Elephant Journal: A Ritual for those Impossible Mornings.

Every morning was a surprise.
In another life, not so long ago, the journey from my sheets to the coffee pot seemed impossible.
Morning was a foggy mystery full of unwelcome clues from the night before and too much wine. Sunlight was an aggressive force against the slicing pain between my eyes. Every day felt like a continuation of confusion from all the nights before. I did not feel real. I could not seem to step into myself and start my day effectively. Something needed to change.

MNN: This tiny fern could help fight climate change

A fern with leaves no larger than a gnat could be one of the most important plants on Earth.

Researchers have sequenced the genome of Azolla filiculoides, a bright green fern with a long history, and they’ve discovered the genes that give the fern some incredible abilities: It’s able to “fix” nitrogen on its own, to ward off insects and to be a carbon sink.

Inner Journey:

FEEL YOUR EMOTIONS

“The key is to not resist or rebel against emotions or to try to get around them by devising all sorts of tricks; but to accept them directly, as they are.”
— Takahisa Kora

Emotions are energy in motion. They bring us information if we are willing to experience them. Unfortunately, many of us are afraid of the energy of emotions and so we automatically resist them. And when we refuse to experience our emotions, we block them up. They become trapped and that entrapment drains our energy and brings continuing discomfort.

Don’t let emotions push you into action or reaction. Just STOP and PAY ATTENTION. Allow them to be and to speak to you. Oncem they are acknowledged, their energy is released.

“Instead of resisting any emotion, the best way to dispel it is to enter it fully, embrace it and see through your resistance.”
— Deepak Chopra

“We have to become more conscious of our feeling-world. By learning to identify the ‘emotional baggage’ and manage our feeling-world reactions, we can view life based on current information instead of being held captive by our past.”
— Doc Childre

“Our feelings are our most genuine paths to knowledge.”
— Audre Lorde

A Note from the Universe

Go for it, not once, but again and again and again. Whatever it takes. Because in the end, with arms held high in the winner’s circle, beaming with joy, as light as a feather, crying your eyes out, you’ll see how fantastically disproportionate the rewards are for the effort expended, the risks taken, and the price paid – no matter how many false starts you endured. And you’ll be astounded by how quickly you made it, even though, when the going got tough and your spirits ebbed, you thought you’d never, ever, ever, “see the day.”

Tallyho,

The Universe

Enthusiasm

“The measure of an enthusiasm must be taken between interesting events. It is between bites that the lukewarm angler loses heart.”

-Edwin Way Teale

Can’t you just picture this scenario? A fisherman who LOVES to fish doesn’t just love those moments when he actually lands one – he loves the whole process. Similarly, an actor with an enthusiasm for his craft is just as happy doing a part in a community theatre play as he would be starring in a feature film. What makes for an “interesting event?” What compels us to hang in there? It’s the whole process that generates enthusiasm when we truly love to do what we do.
