Wise Woman Herbal: Lammas by Susun Weed

The least known of the eight major Pagan holy days is Lammas, celebrated on the first of August. (The other primary holy days are the Summer and Winter Solstices, the Spring and Fall Equinoxes, and the Cross Quarter Days of Imbolc and Beltane.)

Lammas, or “Loaf Mass,” is the Feast of the First Harvest, the Feast of Bread. This Holy Day honors the women who created agriculture and bred the crops we cultivate, especially the grains, or corn. In the British Isles, celebrants make corn dollies from the last of the newly-harvested wheat.

When corn rigs are bonny,
Beneath the Moon’s unclouded light,

To see me through the barley…
Corn rigs and barley rigs,
Corn rigs are bonny!
I’ll not forget that happy night
Among the rigs with Annie!”

EarthSky News: Spot the young moon in early August

From most of the world on August 1, 2019, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll see the waxing crescent moon after sunset. After all, the new moon happens on August 1, 2019, at 3:12 UTC; translate UTC to your time. At that instant of new moon, according to astronomers’ definitions, the old moon becomes a young moon again, as the moon transitions out of the morning sky and into evening sky.

Patheos-Pagan: 5 Simple Ways to Bring Lammas to Our Modern Lives

Lammas. Probably one of the most overlooked of Pagan and Heathen holidays – and it’s not the only option this time of year. We don’t know when it was first celebrated, but it certainly goes as far back as early medieval England. There, it was a celebration of the wheat harvest. It was also the time that tenants would present their rent payments to the landlord – usually in the form of wheat.

Inner Journey:

TRUST IN ABUNDANCE

“Once, when we were discussing a world peace project with my teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, somebody asked him, ‘Where is all the money going to come from?’ And he replied without hesitation, ‘From wherever it is atthe moment.'”
— Deepak Chopra

How can you open to greater trust that you’ll always have what you need?

Fear, doubt, anxiety and disbelief all serve to repel abundance from us. Faith, love and gratitude for the gifts of our lives keep energy and abundance flowing. The more we trust in our well being, the more it will be realized.

“Manifestation is an act of trust. It is the soul pouring itself out into its world, like a fisherman casting a net to gather in the fish he seeks; with each cast properly made, we will bring what we need to us, but firstwe must hurl ourselves into the depths without knowing just what lies beneath us.”

Intuition

“Instinct is the nose of the mind.”
-Madame De Girardin

I love this! The nose doesn’t “think” – it just senses- our brain then translates what scent is coming through. Our instinct is the same way- sometimes we don’t know why we know something, but we just do. So rather than try to translate or decipher this information in the brain, it might do us well to just go with it every once in awhile, and find out just where our intuition leads us.

These are the dog days of summer, the gardens are full of goodies, the fields are full of grain, and the harvest is approaching. Take a moment to relax in the heat, and reflect on the upcoming abundance of the fall months. At Lammas, sometimes called Lughnasadh, it’s time to begin reaping what we have sown throughout the past few months, and recognize that the bright summer days will soon come to an end.

Today’s Deity: Lugh, Master of Skills

Similar to the Roman god Mercury, Lugh was known as a god of both skill and the distribution of talent. There are countless inscriptions and statues dedicated to Lugh, and Julius Caesar himself commented on this god’s importance to the Celtic people. Although he was not a war god in the same sense as the Roman Mars, Lugh was considered a warrior because to the Celts, skill on the battlefield was a highly valued ability. In Ireland, which was never invaded by Roman troops, Lugh is called sam ildanach, meaning he was skilled in many arts simultaneously.

Inner Journey:

REAWAKEN YOUR CURIOSITY

“What a distressing contrast there is between the radiant intelligence of the child and the feeble mentality of the average adult.”
— Sigmund Freud

Why is this so?

Young children possess what Zen calls ‘beginner’s mind.’ They are awed and fascinated with the wonder of the world, open to discovering and experiencing new things. Anything is possible. Life is a great adventure.

For almost all of us, the systems that ‘educate’ us to be adults stifle our natural joy and curiosity. We lose touch with our innate appreciation of life. We forget how to dream.

The blessing is that with attention, patience and love, we can reawaken our sense of wonder. We can again dance with life.

Intuition

“You must train your intuition – you must trust the small voice inside you which tells you exactly what to say, what to decide.”
-Ingrid Bergman

Jewel sings a song called “Intuition.” It’s gotten me thinking about intuition, instinct, hunches… it’s all the same thing. The lyrics in the song say: “Follow your heart, your intuition, it will lead you in the right direction.” Great advice- but like much great advice, do we always take it? I think we try to second guess ourselves too much. When Ingrid Bergman says we must train our intuition, I think she really means that we must train ourselves to listen to that voice, and hear what it has to say.

Spirit Library: Lunar Eclipse and The Sandman

We had a Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn (24 degrees), with Pluto almost right alongside it (22 degrees) adding to the emotional intensity. Lunar Eclipses reveal things. They bring hidden influences to the surface – emotions, insights, secrets. They are associated with endings and letting go – of habits, patterns, wounds, dreams or even people. A Lunar Eclipse can feel like a Full Moon x 100 so if you’re a sensitive person you might be feeling particularly on edge this week – some people feel it a couple days prior, others in the couple of days following.

Inner Journey:

PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT

“…conflict is the primary engine of creativity and innovation. People don’t learn by staring into a mirror; people learn by encountering difference.”
— Ronald Heifetz

In his book, ‘Men, Women and Relationships,’ John Gray says, “People are different. Recognizing this fundamental truth is essential for creating positive and loving relationships. In practice, however, … we demand that the people in our lives feel, think, and behave as we would. And when they react differently we make them wrong or invalidate them; we try to fix them when they really need understanding and nurturing; we try to improve them when instead they need acceptance, appreciation and trust.”

We each bring different gifts to this world. We each have different work to do. Our lives are enriched when we can celebrate these differences rather than resent, resist and reject them. As we get more secure in who we are, we get more compassionate toward others.

“Homogeneity makes for healthy milk but anemic friendships. We need relationships that cross culturally imposed lines to enlarge our hearts and expand our vistas.”
— Dan Schmidt

Patheos-Pagan: The Power Of The Witches’ Mind: Self-Deception, The Imagined Other, And Sympathetic Magick

Through our powerful witches’ minds, we create magick both in the form of an actual poppet or of the entirely energetic variety when we create mighty illusions of ourselves and others. Like sympathetic witchcraft, our thoughts create beings of ourselves and others that may have little to do with truth. Whether the poppet is a physical creation or entirely an energetic thought-form, sticking needles and otherwise giving attention to false poppets leads to trouble.

Inner Journey:

ON SADNESS

“Our sadness is an energy we discharge in order to heal. …Sadness is painful. We try to avoid it. Actually discharging sadness releases the energy involved in our emotional pain. To hold it in is to freeze the pain within us. The therapeutic slogan is that grieving is the ‘healing feeling.'”
— John Bradshaw

“To weep is to make less the depth of grief.”
— William Shakespeare

“There is no despair so absolute as that which comes with the first moments of our first great sorrow, when we have not yet known what it is to have suffered and be healed, to have despaired and recovered hope.”
— George Eliot

“Seek not happiness too greedily, and be not fearful of unhappiness.”
— Lao-tzu

“When the heart grieves over what it has lost, the spirit rejoices over what it has left.”
— Sufi epigram

Today’s Deity: Tezcatlipoca: Aztec God of Night and Smoking Mirrors

Tezcatlipoca (Tez-ca-tlee-POH-ka), whose name means “Smoking Mirror”, was the Aztec god of night and sorcery, as well as the patron deity of Aztec kings and young warriors. As with many Aztec gods, he was associated with several aspects of Aztec religion, the sky, and the earth, winds and the north, kingship, divination, and war. For the different aspects he embodied, Tezcatlipoca was also known as the Red Tezcatlipoca of the West, and the Black Tezcatlipoca of the North, associated with death and cold.

Sharing

“For we must share, if we would keep,
that blessing from above;
Ceasing to give, we cease to have;
such is the law of love.”
-Richard C. Trench

By sharing we recognize the abundance of whatever it is we have and are content to allow others to participate in our good fortune. There’s another saying that “love isn’t love until you give it away.” Blessings, like love, are meant to be shared. And whatever we share we seem to have more of!

Daily Good: Creating Welcoming Space

“Hospitality means creating welcoming space for the other. Henri J. Nouwen notes that the Dutch word for hospitality, gastvrijheid, means ‘the freedom of the guest.’ It entails creating not just physical room but emotional spaciousness where the stranger can enter and be himself or herself, where the stranger can become ally instead of threat, friend instead of enemy.” In a time when it is more crucial than ever for humanity to revisit its relationship to strangers, this passage from Sr. Marilyn Lacey shines like a beacon.

There’s a lot to admire about these quirky critters.

Pity the poor opossum. The oft-maligned marsupial definitely suffers from an image problem — it is frequently perceived more as a giant, dirty, scavenging rat rather than a cute creature of the wild. But whether you love them or hate them, North America’s only marsupial has a set of unique characteristics that might transform aversion into affection.

Wise Woman Herbal: The Rhythms of Life
by Ann Marie Fryer Wiboltt

Today I went for a walk in my garden, which is nestled among the fields and woods with late summer flowers. It was humid and hot. The leaves of the near by maple trees had begun to turn yellow and orange, one by one spiraling to the ground. I felt the warmth of the air touching my skin and the wet, flexible soil below my feet. With my awareness I began to sense life itself. I sensed inwardly how the earth breathes and changes. I entered into the blue of the sky; let it permeate my whole being and felt the reverence that embraces the earth. I was filled with joy and reverence of just being.

EarthSky News: Moon to sweep by Jupiter July 12 to 14

On the evenings of July 12, 13 and 14, 2019, watch for the bright waxing gibbous moon to swing by the giant planet Jupiter. Fortunately, the king planet is so bright that this world can easily withstand the lunar glare. After all, Jupiter is the 4th-brightest light in the heavens, after the sun, moon and planet Venus. Venus is a morning object, virtually lost in the sun’s glare now, so there’s no way to mistake Venus for Jupiter in the July evening sky.

A FOCUS ON YOU OR ME?

“Our deepest need is for the joy that comes with loving and being loved, with knowing we are of genuine use to others.”
— Eknath Easwaran

Are you more self-conscious or other-conscious?

Watch your motives for the day. Are they generally about you (your own desires and needs) or are they about others and their needs? There are no right and wrong answers here.

We must guard, though, that we aren’t using service to others as a means to get our own ego needs met. If we are, we would be wise to meet our own needs first so our interactions with others are not primarily self- serving.

“We are able to be of service to those who suffer only to the extent that we have been able to transform fear in our own lives.”

Uncertainty

“The quest for certainty blocks the search for meaning. Uncertainty is the very condition to impel man to unfold his powers.”
-Erich Fromm

I think this is kind of like “necessity is the mother of invention.” What makes us learn and grow and propels us forward is uncertainty. If everything were certain we would get lazy pretty quick- Instead we are constantly challenged to find solutions and better our conditions.

EarthSky News: Moon’s near side is its dark side

Tonight, while the moon is a few days shy of meeting up with the king planet Jupiter, let’s see if we can make out the dark areas on tonight’s waxing gibbous moon. These smooth, low-lying lunar plains are called maria, the plural for the word mare, the Latin word for sea. You should be able to see the darkened portions on the moon with the eye alone. The dark maria on the moon’s near side – the solidified remnants of ancient lunar seas of molten magma – make the near side of the moon reflect less light than the far side, which has fewer maria

Inner Journey:

REVIEW AND RECOMMIT

“Few people have any next, they live from hand to mouth without a plan, and are always at the end of their line.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just think: When we are driving, we know where we want to go and we plot out our route. When we plan and prepare a meal, we follow a recipe and monitor the food as it cooks.

How much attention do we give to planning the direction of our lives?

Taking the time to review our quality of life gives us a chance to re-evaluate what we are doing and where we want to go. It lets us fine-tune our direction, to ensure we are on track for what we most want.

Stop and think about your last 6 months. What did you learn? What would you like to do differently? Where do you want to recommit?

“Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.”
— A. A. Milne

“Always have a plan, and believe in it. Nothing happens by accident.”
— Chuck Knox

Uncertainty

“Uncertainty and mystery are energies of life. Don’t let them scare you unduly, for they keep boredom at bay and spark creativity.”
-R.I. Fitzhenry

We live in a world of uncertainty. No matter how hard we plan or schedule or try to control things, the truth is that anything can happen, at any time! We can embrace that, and take what comes- or we can live in a state of apprehension. But we can’t change the “unknowingness” – that’s just a part of life, so we might as well enjoy it!
