“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.”
– Edith Sitwell

Spirituality & Health: Fall in Love with Being Single

The feast of St. Valentine is February 14th, a day when all things heart-shaped and chocolate-covered are celebrated. Valentine’s Day can rub some people the wrong way, especially if they are single in a culture that is bent on making everyone part of a “happy couple.” Being single, however, has many perks. Let’s look at some of the reasons to embrace being single, if you happen to be.

MBG: Happy Lunar New Year! Here’s What The Year Of The Pig Symbolizes

Come on out of the doghouse—there’s a party in the pen! As we celebrate the Chinese (Lunar) New Year this February 5, 2019, the Year of the Earth Pig begins, kicking off the night before with the Lunar New Year’s Eve on February 4. After two intense years, this convivial cycle gives us a chance to “rest and digest.” The pregnant pause of 2019 might even help us make some sense of all the global mudslinging that’s been going around. Serenity now?

Daily Good: On Defining Spirit

“What then is the spiritual? I find it difficult to define directly. It’s much easier to say what it isn’t that what it is. For example — the spiritual is often confused with the moral, but it’s not the moral. Morality is concerned with issues of right and wrong. Although often attributed to the “godhead”, it actually has a social basis and reflects a social tradition or consensus. What is considered moral varies from culture to culture and from time to time within the same culture.

The Wild Hunt: “Sights and Sounds of Ancient Ritual”: an exhibition

The Wild Hunt reviews an ongoing exhibition at the Yale University Art Gallery, “Signs and Sounds of Ancient Ritual,” which explores the world of ancient religious ritual through human sensation.

MNN: JOMO is my new favorite thing
If you’re at all introverted, it could be yours, too.

If you’re over FOMO (fear of missing out) — or you were never into it in the first place, you’ll be happy to hear that JOMO is now a thing. That’s the joy of missing out.

For all of us who enjoy not just a night in, but a week of evenings spent reading, watching movies, working on our own little projects, or hiking, biking and otherwise loving the great outdoors, we know all about JOMO

EarthSky News: See the Double Cluster in Perseus

Tonight, find the gorgeous Double Cluster in the constellation Perseus. It’s a wonderful sight to see, assuming your sky is dark. To see it at this time of year, face North to Northwest as darkness falls. The Double Cluster consists of two open star clusters, known as “H” and “Chi” Persei (also called NGC 884 and 869).

Patheos-Pagan: Anglo-Saxon Based Holiday Calendar 2019

It’s a bit late this year, but here is my Anglo-Saxon calendar of holidays for 2019. The standard disclaimer applies: this calendar is based on my interpretation of the Venerable Bede’s description of the Anglo-Saxon calendar in his work De Temporum Ratione.

Inner Journey:

“The burden is equal to the horse’s strength.”
— The Talmud

What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?

If you make a list of the two and study them, you may discover they match.

Life needs us to bring our strengths to the world. To encourage us to do so, we have weaknesses that give rise to problems that require us to call on our strengths to solve them. Ingenious, don’t you think?

“Our weaknesses are divine gifts that when embraced will enable us to make our purposeful contribution to the whole, which is why we incarnated in the first place.”
— Andrew Schneider

“We acquire the strength we have overcome.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

A Note from the Universe

Some people are happiest when they have something to be unhappy about.

I say, let them be “happy.”

Not you,

Today’s Recipe: Saffron Rice Cake with Chicken

This Persian dish is basically a savoury “cake” made from rice, yogurt, eggs, saffron and chicken. How it all binds together creates this most comforting pillowy texture unlike any other. Because it’s cooked in a pot with oil, it has this amazing crispy outer shell. You slice right into it just like a cake, and enjoy the crisp exterior and the soft interior.

Look! the round-cheeked moon floats high,
In the glowing August sky,
Quenching all her neighbor stars,
Save the steady flame of Mars.
White as silver shines the sea,
Far-off sails like phantoms be,
Gliding o’er that lake of light,
Vanishing in nether night.
Heavy hangs the tasseled corn,
Sighing for the cordial morn;
But the marshy-meadows bare,
Love this spectral-lighted air,
Drink the dews and lift their song,
Chirp of crickets all night long;
Earth and sea enchanted lie
‘Neath that moon-usurped sky.
-Emma Lazarus (1849-87)

MBG: The Real Cause Of Depression Is About Way More Than Just Serotonin

Many of us have been taught that depression is the result of a genetic chemical imbalance. And while there is certainly a genetic component to depression, and, yes, neurotransmitters like serotonin do play a role in mood, depression actually has many potential root causes.

Daily Good: Embracing JOMO, The Joy of Missing Out

“Fear of missing out, or FOMO, is a common sensation in our high-pressure, social media-frenzied world, particularly in Western society. A recent study defined FOMO as, “the uneasy and sometimes all-consuming feeling that you’re missing out – that your peers are doing, in the know about, or in possession of more or something better than you.” Under these terms, nearly 75 percent of young adults reported experiencing the phenomenon. So what exactly are we so afraid we’re missing out on?

Elephant Journal: The Healing Power of Touch.

Like so many young, bright-eyed enthusiasts hungry for meaning and knowledge, I set out in my early 20s in search of something I couldn’t put my finger on.

I found a tiny but mighty school just north of the city, where I started learning a bodywork practice called shiatsu. It was there that the question of how to be a healing presence for a world so desperately in need of kind, helping souls began to unfold

MNN: Ancient European stone inscriptions revealed by low river levels carry grave warnings

A sweltering, record-breaking heat wave throughout Europe this summer is causing widespread drought, and river levels, such as along the Elbe, are reaching critical lows. The crisis has gotten so bad that many large river stones that have been underwater for centuries are now being exposed, and many of them are inscribed with grim, dire warnings.

“If you see me, weep,” reads one.

EarthSky News: Cassiopeia points to Andromeda galaxy

Tonight, if you have dark sky, try star-hopping to the Andromeda galaxy from the constellation Cassiopeia the Queen. If your sky is truly dark, you might even spot this hazy patch of light with no optical aid, as the ancient stargazers did before the days of light pollution.

Patheos-Pagan: From a Common Well

The Sea, ultimately the source for the waters in the well, is one of the realms in ADF, along with the Land and the Sky. We envision that the waters of the well extend into the earth and that the well, in a ritual context, provides a gateway to the Ancestors, which are one of our Kindreds

Inner Journey:

“… no matter what our difficulties may be, we recognize that there is a deep untroubled stream flowing below all surface troubles and that we are of one substance with that stream. The soul knows no difficulties.”
— James Thornton

Masters teach that we can experience two completely different states of reality at the same time — from the personality and from the soul.

Author Pema Chödron talks about being hungry, cold and tired but at that same time deeply content. Ram Dass speaks of how the emotional heart can be breaking while we recognize that all is unfolding perfectly.

Allowing our soul to be present with the discomforts of the personality shifts our experience of the discomforts.

“True self simply refers to the aspect of our being that is completely aware of its expanded nature no matter what we may be experiencing in our lives.”
— Martia Nelson

A Note from the Universe

Do you know what surprises those most, who finally take that great magic carpet ride over their most recent time-space incarnation?

Besides how safe they always were…

No, besides how many friends in the unseen always hovered nearby…

No, no, besides how much they accomplished and how many lives they touched…

Dang it, besides how powerful, and divine, and supernatural they were…

OK, I’ll just tell you. It’s how utterly unimportant the things they worried about really were.

“Reality has changed chameleon-like before my eyes so many times that I have learned, or am learning, to trust almost anything except what appears to be so.”

-Maya Angelou

Appearances change. Nothing in this exterior world stays the same. Have you ever gone to visit a place, only to return several years later and not even recognize it? Buildings go up and down, tenants move in and out, trees grow, signs change. People change, too. We all start out as babies, and our features mature as we age. Our hairstyles and clothes change with the trends. But what stays the same? Spirit. We can trust that love never goes out of style, and never moves away.

-Lissa Coffey
