Shelter for the Heart and Mind

“How can we keep walking forward, and even find renewal along the way, in this year of things blown apart? How can we hold to our sense of what is whole and true and undamaged, even in the face of loss? These are some of the questions Sharon Salzberg, a renowned teacher of meditation and Buddhist practices, has been taking up in virtual retreats this year, which have helped ground many on hard days. She teaches how to stay present to the world while learning kindness toward yourself.” Read Krista Tippett’s interview with Sharon Salzberg here. { read more }

Inner Journey: FREE TO CHOOSE

“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.”
— Sigmund Freud

In his book Nobody’s Victim, Christopher J. McCullough explains, “In order to live your freedom, you must first accept reality. ‘These are the choices, and given those choices, which do I choose?’ Whether the option you select is pleasant or painful does not alter the fact that, given reality, this is your preference.

“To live your freedom, it is helpful to stop and ask yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ and then notice whether, given the options, you are choosing what you really want, or whether you want to choose something else…. Sometimes the exercise of freedom involves naming your poison — all choices may lead to outcomes that are in some way painful. But the real pain is that of feeling powerless — denying your freedom.”

“Freedom is man’s capacity to take a hand in his own development. It is our capacity to mold ourselves.”
— Dr. Rollo May

A Note from the Universe

However safe you might think you are right now, you are even safer.

However much you might think you are loved and guided right now, you are loved and guided even more.

And however likely you feel your future happiness is to blossom, let me assure you, it is, in fact, inevitable. Eternally.

It’s simply that from within the jungles of time and space none of what I just shared is obvious, even as I hold you in the palm of my hand, because you’ve accepted what is unquestionably the single most daunting challenge I’ve ever imagined: to forget that we are one.

Good on you,

The Universe

Courtesy
“If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world, and that his heart is no island cut off from other lands, but a continent that joins to them.”

-Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

A citizen of the world. Yes! We are all in this together – no boundaries, no territories. We owe it to each other to show courtesy. In this way we are recognizing our heart connection. And our courtesy needs to extend to our friends and family, as well as strangers. Sometimes we take for granted that our family sits at the table with us and we don’t think about our behavior. But it is so important to be kind and gracious both outside our homes and inside our homes.

Patheos-Pagan: Celebrating Hermes, Messenger God & Guide Of Souls, On Samhain
Hermes is the messenger of the gods in the Greek pantheon, “angelos ton theon” or “Angelos Athanatôn“. He’s also known as psychopompos, or psychopomp which means “guide of souls”. Like Hekate, he is a god of traveling between the worlds, and is a god of travel in general. Both of these deities are strongly connected with one another. So it’s fairly straightforward why in addition to recommending Hekate as a good deity to honor during Samhain, I also recommend giving Hermes his due.

Inner Journey:

LET GO OF THE PAST

“Your journey has molded you for your greater good, and it was exactly what it needed to be. Don’t think that you’ve lost time. There is no short-cutting to life. It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. And now is right on time.”
— Asha Tyson

No regrets. As we become more aware, we begin to realize that there’s a purpose to everything that happens. This builds our trust, and supports us in being willing to be more open and daring to really experience life as it unfolds.

If we pay attention to what’s happening in each moment, we will discover that life continually brings us opportunities to heal our past wounds. When a painful memory surfaces, we can take the time to feel it fully, give compassion to ourselves and any others and allow the energy to release. As we deal with the past in this way IN THE PRESENT, we free ourselves to more fully connect with life.

“The next message you need is right where you are.”
— Ram Dass

A Note from the Universe

For millennia the path to enlightenment has been made up of many steps.

Most commonly, it begins with festering misunderstandings that lead to pain, the pain then leads to growth, growth leads to clarity, clarity leads to fun, fun leads to joy, and joy leads to true illumination.

May I recommend skipping to the fun part?

Love you forever –

Today’s Recipe: Avocado Quick Bread

I had a couple avocados that had been in the fridge for a few extra days. I thought they might be a bit too old, they weren’t, but I was committed to trying to make quick bread. I found this recipe on the tablespoon.com site and then changed it up a tiny bit. If I make it again I will definitely add chopped walnuts. The batter had a delightful flowery aroma and the bread itself is delicious.

Forgiveness

“Forgive all who have offended you, not for them, but for yourself.” -Harriet Uts Nelson

When we hold on to our grudges, when we refuse to forgive, the only one we are really hurting is ourself. Why cause ourselves unnecessary pain? Where is the spiritual lesson in that? We can choose to release these grievances and choose to create a miracle. Forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves.
