Festivus is on December 23 and it’s perfect for those who don’t have a traditional holiday to celebrate. Although it sounds paradoxical, its purpose makes a lot of sense. Not everyone has a major holiday to celebrate like Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa and they can feel left out. This holiday gives many people a non-denominational and non-commercial holiday to call their own. Festivus is for everybody!

Daily Good: The Land Has Memory

Injustices started when we began to lose our relationship to nature and treat it just as a resource to be commodified.

Cherrie Moraga –

The Land Has Memory

“The denial and fear of death makes possession, possessiveness, and overconsumption possible. If we would just pull back a bit, slow down, and ask the “why” of each of our actions, based on the utter assurance of death, we would all be better off environmentally.” Playwright, poet, and essayist Cherrie Moraga sees the world as a place where the body knows and “the land has memory.” “Her writings have shaped fundamental aspects of contemporary woman of color feminist thought, including debates on ethnic nationalism, indigeneity, sexuality, and social justice. In addition to her plays and essay collections, she was coeditor with Gloria Anzaldua of the landmark feminist collection This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color.” More in this interview.” { read more }

Inner Journey: ARE YOU AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT?

On the path of evolution, we move from being a willing and obedient member of the group to wanting to take control over our own lives. This is a necessary but difficult transition.

Andrew Schneider says, “At this point we are afraid of being ourselves. We are afraid of being unique and different. We are afraid of being individually powerful, and even successful. For all of these things stand against the old ways that told us that conformity was right and individualism was wrong.”

“For as long as we possibly can, we make a compromise. We try to live both lives – the dependent tribal life and the independent personal life – as contradictory and opposite as they are.

“We want approval from others. We want to be accepted and popular. We seek this comfort to overcome our fear and feel more secure. …So, at times when we conform, we don’t feel the fear of living. But we might lose the new sense of adventure, discovery, daring and enthusiasm for life that the questioning and questing have brought us.”

“Nature never repeats herself, and the possibilities of one human soul will never be found in another.”
— Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Family
“The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”

-Erma Bombeck, 1987

This is a good week to talk about family. I grew up reading Erma Bombeck’s columns – my mother could really relate to her. Erma had a great way of seeing the humor and light in the most absurd situations. This family, this group of people we’re somehow thrown together with, and with whom we share our tragedies and triumphs, is ultimately one of our greatest tools for learning in this lifetime. They challenge us, in ways no one else can, to grow.

Inner Journey:

CALM THE MIND

“All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.”
— Blaise Pascal

Meditation calms our minds and makes it easier for us to pay attention to the reality around and within us. Meditation breaks through the masks that have built up as our identity. It helps us see through our defences and connect with unacknowledged and unloved aspects of ourselves. It opens us to higher mind and the voice of intuition.
We can consciously choose meditation as a way to become more aware of who we truly are. If we don’t take the initiative to open to our authentic selves, we can be certain that deep challenge and pain from life experience will push us to awaken.

“Meditation helps me feel the shape, the texture of my inner life. Here, in the quiet, I can begin to taste what Buddhists would call my true nature, what Jews call the still, small voice, what Christians call the holy spirit.”
— Wayne Muller

“In a world filled with noise, we need to quiet ourselves to hear God’s voice.”

Angels

“Angels are pure thoughts from God, winged with Truth and Love.”

-Mary Baker Eddy, 1875

There are so many different definitions for angels, that we can’t really argue “if” they exist or not – angels in some shape or form or thought have a place in this world. We have stories about them, movies and TV shows about them, they are prevalent whether they are on top of a Christmas tree or in a fresco painting. And they are always good and sweet and beautiful. What can we take from this? That there is a loving presence among us!

According to a Pew Research Center study, only 39 percent of U.S. adults consider themselves “highly religious.” Until recently, Pew categorized those who couldn’t neatly check a box for a mainstream religion as “nones.” Yet the researchers were missing a key point: Many who didn’t fit easily into the surveys were becoming increasingly spiritual. Our definition of religion was expanding. We were redefining what sacred, spiritual, and religious meant for us. We were driving spiritual freedom of choice.

Use your awareness or your imagination to bring happiness to this moment. Find something to appreciate. Do this as often as you remember to do so, and your world will transform.

Herbal Muse: Turmeric Generates New Brain Cells

More than one million adults in the U.S. are diagnosed with a chronic brain disease or disorder each year. This includes Alzheimer’s, stroke and Parkinson’s, which affect aging adults the most. Adhering to a healthy lifestyle and a diet abundant in “brain foods” like flavonoid-rich berries and antioxidants from herbs and green tea, can go a long way to keep your grey matter in good working order. Score big for engaging in mental exercises, like reading and crossword puzzles, too. But scientists now believe that an aromatic compound in turmeric root may hold the key to the recovery of brain function through the generation of new stem cells.

Perfection

“Perhaps the crescent moon smiles in doubt
at being told that it is a fragment
awaiting perfection.”

-Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)

I love this! Tagore has such a way with words. Imagine that moon, shining so brightly and proudly – knowing that it is what it is and that it is absolutely perfect just the way it is. Is there anything missing? Not a chance! Can we see our lives in the same light? They are perfect just the way they are right here and right now.
