Mabon, the Autumn Equinox, is celebrated in many ways around the world. It is a day of balance, with equal amounts of darkness and light, but soon, winter will arrive. In some Wiccan traditions, it marks the time when the Sun King descends into the underworld, from which he will be reborn at Yule.

MBG: Why There’s No Such Thing As Zodiac Cusps, According To Astrologers

If you’ve ever met someone whose birthday fell near the meeting point of two zodiac signs—i.e., Gemini and Cancer—they may have insisted they’re a Gemini-Cancer cusp. Maybe you’ve even referred to yourself as a “cusp” before, with regards to your own sign. But we consulted mbg’s resident astrologists, the AstroTwins, on the question of cusps, and according to them, they might just be another astrology myth.

EarthSky News: Moon and star Antares on August 25

As darkness falls on August 25, 2020, the moon will be at or near its half-illuminated first quarter phase, and close to the star Antares on the sky’s dome. Of course, the moon and Antares are not truly close together in space. The moon, our closest celestial neighbor, resides at a average distance of 238,885 miles or 384,400 km; yet the sun, our nearest star, lodges almost 400 times farther distant from Earth than our moon.

Inner Journey: ON FREEDOM

“Our ultimate freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us.”
— Stephen Covey

A Greek myth can help us understand the freedom that comes with power of choice.

In the Underworld, Sisyphus was condemned to roll a large stone up a hill from which it always rolled down again. Realistically, he was trapped in an endless cycle of rolling the stone. When he perceived himself to be imprisoned by the curse, he was a victim.

At one point, however, he turned the tables — he changed his mind and decided to CHOOSE to roll the stone up the hill. In doing so, he empowered himself and defused the curse.

“Freedom is what you do with what’s been done to you.”
— Jean-Paul Sartre

“One cannot make a slave of a free person, for a free person is free even in a prison.”
— Plato

A Note from the Universe

Now! Go!

Stake your claim! Hold out your hands. Move, get ready, give thanks. Imagine, and let go.

Act, and have faith. Persist. Do what you can, when you can, all you can.

Because never again, not in a million years, not over ten thousand lifetimes, will you ever again be as close as you are today.

Clear up a misunderstanding and free up some time and space to begin something you’ve been wanting to do but felt beyond your means. You might also come to an understanding with someone who has been an obstacle for you, whether because of pride, some power struggle, or other kind of competition or misconstrued sense of prestige or self-importance. ThoughtCo: Cernunnos – Wild God of the Forest

Cernunnos is a horned god found in Celtic mythology. He is connected with male animals, particularly the stag in rut, and this has led him to be associated with fertility and vegetation. Depictions of Cernunnos are found in many parts of the British Isles and western Europe. He is often portrayed with a beard and wild, shaggy hair–he is, after all, the lord of the forest

Daily Good: The Atomic Tree

This moving video takes us on a journey into the memories of one of the world’s most revered trees, a 400 year old Japanese white pine bonsai. The tree’s rings hold stories from its inception as a tiny seed, through its early years surrounded by monks who prayed in the surrounding forest. It holds memories of sunlight and purifying rain. Tended by the loving touch and care of five generations of the Yamaki family, the tree and the family survived the devastation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. In 1976 it was gifted to the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. where it remains as a symbol of the merger of lives, forests, and the human family. { read more }

MNN: 12 enchanting quirks of the rare ghost orchid

The ghost orchid is aptly named for a few reasons. Its white flowers have a vaguely spectral appearance, and they seem to hover in the forest due to an illusion created by the leafless plant. PONDER THE RULES

“To do exactly as your neighbors do is the only sensible rule.”
— Emily Post

Do you have strong and clear definitions for what is acceptable and what is not?

Where have these rules come from? What’s the purpose of these judgments? What do they protect?

Can we explore new territory for ourselves and others by allowing and even welcoming spontaneity, exuberance and surprises?

“The idea that men are created free and equal is both true and misleading: men are created different; they lose their social freedom and their individual autonomy in seeking to become like each other.”
— David Riesman

Vision

“Visions are like dreams, only they occur in the waking state.”

-Carl G. Jung (1875-1961)

Are we awake? Are we thinking clearly? Are we seeing clearly? When we can answer these questions affirmatively and have a vision that has caught our attention, we need to do something about it. There’s a reason why certain visions come to us at certain times in our lives. And there’s a reason why certain visions come to certain people and not others. It doesn’t matter where this vision comes from, once we have it, it is ours. And it is up to us to act on it, to do what we can to make this world a better place.

You can secure an important victory and achieve a long-held aspiration today. This obviously is not an overnight achievement but probably something you’ve been intermittently pursuing for a long time. Some dreams refuse to die, and this may be the day for one of those dreams to begin to see the light of day in the real world. Be heartened and don’t let up now.
