The energies that have been building over the past several months are coming to a peak. As a result, there is a clash between the old and the new. Events both individually and collectively are calling attention to that which we need to surrender and release.

ThoughtCo: Jar Spells in Folk Magic

In many traditions of folk magic, particularly in North America, a spell is sealed inside a jar, bottle or another container. This serves a number of purposes – the first being that it keeps the magic concentrated, and prevents it from escaping before the spell has been completed.

Daily Good: What Is Compassion?

Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well, can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.

Pema Chodron –

What Is Compassion?

“Compassion literally means to suffer together. Among emotion researchers, it is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with anothers suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.” We are living in a time where a deep understanding of, and value for, compassion is more critical than ever. More from Dachner Keltner on the evolutionary roots of compassion here. { read more }

Be The Change

Experiment with trying to look for the basis of shared humanity in every single one of your interactions this week. Notice how this orientation affects you, and perhaps others.

Grief is such a mercurial thing.
You think you’ve got it all figured out, shaving scraped it from the depths of your soul, and then there it is—peeking at you from around some unsuspecting corner.

Or, it is that thing we are afraid to look at altogether—in case it breaks like an aging dam over our whole existence.

Patheos-Pagan: What is a Devotional Practice?

Let’s talk about what exactly a devotional practice is and why it’s important. Merriam-Webster defines a devotional as “a short worship service”. I have to admit, as someone whose training is in Wicca and Druidry, that definition is a bit obscure to me. I Googled “worship service” just to see what our friends over at Merriam-Webster were even talking about.

Inner Journey: LIFE AS A MIRROR

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”
— C.G. Jung

We get clues about our unconscious programming if we watch our reactions, responses, feelings and thoughts about other people and events. Ask yourself: How do I judge or stereotype people? What pushes my buttons? What makes me angry or fearful or sad?

The outer incidents that trigger these reactions in me simply MIRROR my own nature. If I didn’t have beliefs around the issues that upset me, where would my reactions come from? If I didn’t have some internal reference, I wouldn’t react at all.

When outer events spark a reaction, we need to look inside to explore what’s going on.

“We discover in ourselves what others hide from us and we recognize in others what we hide from ourselves.”
— Vauvenargues

Moderation
“To climb steep hills requires a slow pace at first.”

-William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

We all have goals in mind, something that we are working towards. Life is more a marathon than a sprint. We have to pace ourselves, and make sure we don’t get worn out. Sure, we give it our all, but there are times when we put on the steam and other times when we ease off to organize. With this kind of moderation, we can make it as far as we want to go.

2. If you were trying to ride uphill, progress will be slow; riding downhill means that your plans will manifest quickly.

Inner Journey:

Open to the new

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
— Alvin Toffler

How willing are you to learn something new? How open are you to new perspectives?

When we are open, we are willing to move to places we’ve never been before. We are willing to continually review our belief systems so we can test out new ideas.

Be open to seeing things:
– from another’s point of view,
– from a higher and more inclusive perspective
– with a beginner’s attitude of wonder.
“I am always in quest of being open to what the universe will bring me.”
— Jill Bolte Taylor

A Note from the Universe

When you think a new thought, entertain a new dream, or mentally choose a new goal, your thoughts “leave” you and go out — in every direction — to the farthest corners of the planet. They carry a life force all their own, like ripples created when a pebble is tossed into a pond.

You can’t change this,  but you can totally use the heck out of it.

Think good thoughts,

Thinking
“Few people think more than two or three times a year; I have made an international reputation for myself by thinking once or twice a week.”

-George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)

Shaw was a prolific writer, and so funny! He shows us how to laugh at ourselves. It is truly amazing what we can do when we put our minds to it. Whether it is writing plays like Shaw, or theory like Einstein, or music like Mozart – there are examples of brilliant ways to use our minds to create, and to change the world.
