These next few evenings – October 17 and 18, 2018 – that bright “star” near the moon on the sky’s dome is actually the red planet Mars. As darkness falls, you might also see the star Fomalhaut a big hop to the southeast (lower left) of the moon and Mars. Although Fomalhaut ranks as 1st-magnitude star, this star pales in comparison to Mars, which is presently some 6 times brighter than Fomalhaut.
