October Quotes

“The harvest moon hangs round and high
It dodges clouds high in the sky,
The stars wink down their love and mirth
The Autumn season is giving birth.
Oh, it must be October
The leaves of red bright gold and brown,
To Mother Earth come tumbling down,
The breezy nights the ghostly sights,
The eerie spooky far off sounds
Are signs that it’s October.
The pumpkins yellow,. big and round
Are carried by costumed clumsy clowns
It’s Halloween – let’s celebrate.”

As the dark days set in and autumn turns to winter, many Pagans celebrate death as a part of the life cycle. We celebrate the final harvest, and we bid farewell to the Sun God as he grows weaker and prepares for his annual journey to the underworld.

“To all the ancient ones from their houses, the Old Ones from above and below. In this time the Gods of the Earth touch our feet, bare upon the ground. Spirits of the Air whisper in our hair and chill our bodies, and from the dark portions watch and wait the Faery Folk that they may join the circle and leave their track upon the ground. It is the time of the waning year. Winter is upon us. The corn is golden in the winnow heaps. Rains will soon wash sleep into the life-bringing Earth. We are not without fear, we are not without sorrow…Before us are all the signs of Death: the ear of corn is no more green and life is not in it. The Earth is cold and no more will grasses spring jubilant. The Sun but glances upon his sister, the earth….. It is so….Even now….But here also are the signs of life, the eternal promise given to our people. In the death of the corn there is the seed–which is both food for the season of Death and the Beacon which will signal green-growing time and life returning. In the cold of the Earth there is but sleep wherein She will awaken refreshed and renewed, her journey into the Dark Lands ended. And where the Sun journeys he gains new vigor and potency; that in the spring, his blessings shall come ever young!”

Halloween is short for All Hallows’ Eve. And, although many don’t realize it, it’s an astronomical holiday. Do you fly through each day with your eyes always on the clock? In western cultures, we’ve been taught that we need to impose our own order on life. As a result, we think we need to control every aspect of our day.

How might you enter into a new relationship with time? How might you take back the power you’ve given to the clock?

This is the time of your life. How are you spending it?

Nature

“Nature is an endless combination and repetition of a very few laws. She hums the old well-known air through innumerable variations.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Interesting that Emerson calls Nature “she.” Maybe because we think of Mother Nature. The idea, though, is that nature is something we can count on. As unpredictable as nature can be, we do know that the sun will rise, the seasons will change, that rivers will flow to the sea. There are these laws in effect that go beyond our powers of human manipulation. Nature is much bigger than we are, and yet, at the same time, it is an essential part of who we are. The same laws that govern nature affect us as well.

Whether you want insight about the past, knowledge about the present, or guidance for the future, a tarot reading is a great place to start. Inner Journey:

DAILY FORGIVENESS

“As long as you don’t forgive, who and whatever it is will occupy rent-free space in your mind.”
— Isabelle Holland

We cannot avoid daily resentment and thoughts of guilt. They are a part of human nature. What we can do is release their grip on us. We can forgive others and ourselves daily.

Forgiveness requires nothing in return. There are no conditions. It gets rid of old baggage and clears up unfinished business. It leads us to a life of authenticity, lightness and directness. Forgiveness is the highest form of letting go of resentment and ego.

True forgiveness is more than an apology, understanding and acceptance. There is an element of recreating and re-imagining. There is a need to envision ourselves as more loving, interdependent, courageous and compassionate. Forgiveness requires honouring the sacred journey of learning about life – our life and others’.

“Whatever we have done, we can always make amends for it without ever looking back in guilt or sorrow.”
— Eknath Easwaran

Solitude

“We’re all of us sentenced to solitary confinement inside our own skins, for life!”

-Tennessee Williams, Orpheus Descending

There comes a time when we realize that there’s no escaping it, we have to live with ourselves! How do we treat ourselves? Are we kind and loving, do we show appreciation and forgiveness? Too often we’re our own worst critics! We’re hard on ourselves when we really need a break once in awhile. Let’s work on being the kind of person whom we want to be with – and spend some time being ourselves, by ourselves.

The day may be full of confusion but you don’t have to go through it naively and unaware of what’s happening around you. It’s not a good day to flirt with taking silly risks, some of which might turn out to be semi-dangerous or costly. You may be too hyper to want to play it safe, but at least make an effort to not be naïve or irresponsible.

Inner Journey:

HEAL DUALITIES

“Beware of the fury of the patient man.”
— John Dryden

Our minds perceive and give relative value – positive and negative – to the different sides of a duality. We usually shun the negative.

It’s important to know that you cannot eliminate the negative by focusing exclusively on the positive. Energetically, both opposites must remain in balance. Increase one and its opposite will also increase. Try to be only positive and the negative within you will raise its ugly head.

We work with dualities by remembering that each is part of the whole. We must acknowledge and accept all aspects of life, because they all exist within us. And so, if we seek to be honest, we do so by acknowledging our potential to be dishonest. We can also bring in love and compassion when we catch ourselves acting out the negative.

Power arises out of integrating the positive and negatives within us. From the tension that exists between the two, we develop awareness and become more conscious and compassionate.

“Any fool can run towards the light. It takes a master with courage to turn and face the darkness and shine his own light there.”

Solitude

“Solitude gives birth to the original in us, to beauty unfamiliar and perilous – to poetry. But also, it gives birth to the opposite: to the perverse, the illicit, the absurd.”

-Thomas Mann, Death in Venice

To appreciate solitude we need space and time. We need space to be by ourselves and time to enjoy our own company. And from there we can experience silence, and go beyond space and time! Here there are infinite possibilities for us; here is where we find inspiration and creativity. Here there is peace, and joy, and bliss.

Solitude

“Solitude is as needful to the imagination as society is wholesome for the character.”

-James Russell Lowell, Among My Books

Solitude, time spent alone, nourishes our soul. And yet, some of us associate time by ourselves with loneliness. Maybe it’s that we’re afraid of being bored, or that we’re so used to having company that the silence seems awkward. Yet solitude is necessary for our spiritual growth. This is where we learn, this is where we receive those valuable insights. Make a date with yourself today – and spend some time in glorious solitude!

Historic Mysteries: Stingy Jack and the History of the Jack-o’-Lantern
by Les Hewitt

The traditions of Halloween originate from a blend of Samhain, the Celtic celebration marking the end of the summer harvest, and Christian traditions honoring saints and martyrs. Trick-or-Treating and scary costumes are just two ancient traditions that have survived. Today, one of our most beloved Halloween customs is pumpkin carving. This too has been around for many centuries, except that in Ireland, they used turnips and rutabagas

Inner Journey:

DO YOU OWN YOUR LIFE?

“The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
— Ken Hudgins

When we own our lives, we accept what we’ve inherited and the experiences we hold in our memories. We also claim our right to create new conditions if we’re not happy with what’s come before. We assume responsibility for changing what does not suit us. Weacknowledge our own special talents and skills, and truly comprehend our right to enjoy the journey. In short, we embrace the meaning and purpose, the mystery and the beauty of our lives.

Do you feel that you own your life at the moment?

“I think of life itself now as a wonderful play that I’ve written for myself… and so my purpose is to have the utmost fun playing my part.”
— Shirley MacLaine

“Life is too short to be little.”
— Benjamin Disraeli

“Every man dies, but not every man lives….”

Motivation
“I want to do it because I want to do it.”

-Amelia Earhart

Sometimes motivation cannot be explained. It simply is. Maybe it’s how we are guided in our spiritual growth. We each have our own road to travel, and we’re making decisions which way to turn all the time. We’re motivated to keep going, to see what is around that next corner.

Daily Tarot: The Magician

It may be hard to be serious and stick to those dull but crucial tasks that keep the day running smoothly. Be systematic, cheerful, and don’t let it show if you feel undervalued or underappreciated. Save your sharp wit and cleverness for another time and place. Time spent with younger people or children can lift your spirits and keep things in perspective for you.

October Quotes

“The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry’s cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.

The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I’ll put a trinket on.”

EarthSky News: Auriga The Charioteer And Bright Capella On October Evenings

Auriga the Charioteer is a popular constellation for Northern Hemisphere observers in autumn, because its flashing star advertises its presence. Capella, the brightest star in Auriga, flashes red, blue and green when it’s close to the horizon and seen through a thick layer of Earth’s atmosphere. Close to Capella are a pair of stars known as The Kids, baby goats that the Charioteer carries. Auriga houses three star clusters, easy targets to hunt down with binoculars.

Inner Journey:

WHAT BLOCKS CONNECTION?

“People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.”
— Joseph F. Newton

We experience soul when we really connect with life — when we stop and consciously experience what is happening.

We lose soul with:
•resistance – to anyone or anything
•superficiality – we avoid depth of experience
•control – we try to control the relationship
•selfishness – we remain self-centered.

Each of these attitudes fosters separation rather than connection. Once again, soul lives in relating.

Take time to become aware of, and perhaps journal on how you relate to other people and things in your life.

“We have to decide for ourselves what’s nourishing to our souls, and do those things over others.”
— Thomas Moore

Earth
“In this broad earth of ours,
Amid the measureless grossness and the slag,
Enclosed and safe within its central heart,
Nestles the seed perfection.

-Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

There is an underlying perfection to this world. Sometimes we can’t see it with all the problems and pollution, but it is there anyway. When we hold that truth in our consciousness, and focus on that perfection, we can bring it into the light. Think peace.
