September Full ” Harvest” Moon

Friday, September 13/ Saturday, September 14,, 2019

9:32 pm PST / 10:32 pm MST /12:32 am EST

The Old Farmer’s Almanac calls this moon the Full Corn Moon however in the Pagan Traditions it is called the Harvest Moon.

Many of the Native American tribes’ staple foods, such as corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, and rice, were ready for harvesting during this month. The strong light of the Harvest Moon allowed European farmers to work late into the night to harvest their crops which is where the name came from. This moon does not always occur in September and traditionally, the name goes to the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, the Harvest Moon sometimes happens in September and sometimes in October.

Other names for this moon are Chrysanthemum Moon (china), Nut Moon (Cherokee), Mulberry Moon (Choctaw), Singing Moon (Celtic), and Barley Moon (medieval English).

As Mother Earth begins her journey into the dark part of the year, the sun pulls away and we get that welcome autumn chill. September is a time of hearth and home as well as a time to acknowledge the things that we have accomplished since spring.

Now is also a great time to unclutter our homes and selves as we prepare to enter the season of introspection and if you are a  Kitchen Witch it’s a good time to reestablish your Hearth / Kitchen altar!

To get in the autumn mood and celebrate this month’s element of earth try wearing browns, greens, and other earthy colors.

Sacred Stones: Citrine, Peridot, Bloodstone

Sacred Herbs: Grains, Valerian, Witch Hazel

Deities: Hearth Goddesses, Demeter, Brighid, Vesta, Freya

Full moon blessings!

April’s “Full Wind’ Moon on 4-19-19

“If spring came but once a century instead of once a year, or burst forth with the sound of an earthquake and not in silence, what wonder and expectation there would be in all hearts to behold the miraculous change. ”
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

During this full moon we are lured to provocative thoughts of warm days and spring flowers. We see a decrease of the march snows which give way to April showers and windy days. As the wind blows it joyfully spreads last seasons seeds. From these seeds comes growth and new life. Already we are seeing the first flowers leaves of the season. The Old Farmers Almanac calls this the Full Pink Moon because the first grass pink and ground phlox was beginning to grow. Other names for this moon are Seed Moon, Wind Moon, Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Fish Moon Like the full moon of March the April moon is the perfect time to nurture new beginnings. Plans and ideas that you have been thinking about starting can germinate and grow if you start now. The time has come to take action and make things happen. It is particularly good for love and adopting or conceiving a child.

To celebrate this full moon bright primary colors are the pick of the day and Sacred Stones of the Air element like Selenite, Angelite, Celestite and Quartz Crystal are the perfect adornments. Springtime flower scents like lilac, violet, hyacinth and other florals can add a special touch as well.

Full moon blessings!

July’s  Full Blessing Moon

Friday, July 27,2018

 1:20 pm PST / 2:20 pm MST / 4:20 pm EST
The Farmer’s Almanac calls this moon the Buck Moon because this is the time when bucks grow new antlers. Other names for this full moon are Thunder Moon, Summer Moon (colonial ), Hungry Ghost Moon (china), Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), Crane Moon (Choctaw), Moon of Claiming (Celtic), Mead Moon (Medieval English), Rose Moon, Blessing Moon (pagan).

The July moon is also being called a Micromoon, Minimoon or Apogee Moon.  This is because a Micromoon is further away, and will look smaller and less bright. There will also be a lunar eclipse ( the 2nd  this year) at 4:20 EST. It will be visible in large parts of Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America and  will last for 103 minutes, making it the longest eclipse of this 21st century. As an added celestial treat the Mars opposition will also be happening. The red planet will be very close and will be shining at it brightest!

The Buck Moon is a good time for divination, dream work and prosperity magick. The laid back energy of this moon also works well for meditation, so kick back and enjoy the feeling of the things you have accomplished this far or review your goals related to vacations or hobbies.. Add a little something extra to your magickal workings by using July’s herbs hyssop, lemon balm, mugwort, catnip or leaves from ash or oak trees.

You can also celebrate this months moon by wearing the colors blue-gray, silver or green and adorning yourself with moonstone, pearls, opals or a simple white agate.

Full Moon Blessings!

Once in awhile I have the urge to share Native American legends and this is one of those weeks. I hope you enjoy it!

Black and White Moons : A Winnebago Tale as told by Cat

Long ago in the beginning, the good spirits and the evil spirits held a council to decide how the world should be divided between them. The first issue they decided was the question of how many moons there would be from one winter to the next. They asked for suggestions and the first creature to come forward was Turkey. He strutted forward drumming and fanned his tail feathers.

” I say there should be as many moons as there are spots on my tail feathers! Turkey declared.

The council discussed this but in the end voted it down, saying there were far too many spots on Turkey’s tail. Then Partridge strutted forward. He also suggested the number of spots on his tail. After counting the spots on the tail of Partridge the council decided that it was still too many. Then Cipmunk scampered in, throwing his tail over his head in the manner of chipmunks everywhere.

“I say let the year have as many moons as there are black and white stripes on my back!” heh squeaked.

The council discussed this and found it to be a good plan. They decided that the six black stripes would represent the summer moons and the six white stripes would represent the winter moons. And so it was settled.

But everyone knows that evil spirits are greedy. When they saw the bright white moon lighting up the sky they decided that they had not been give enough darkness. So the evil spirits began to eat away at the moon until nothing remained but darkness. But the great Earthmaker was not pleased. He had who had created the moon refused to see it destroyed, leaving the world dark for the evil spirits. So he devised a plan and began to recreate the moon a little each night. At the end of fourteen days the moon was  again full and covered the earth with light. Then earthmaker rested. But while he rested the evil spirits  once again ate away the moon until darkness once again covered the earth.

So the battle continues. The Earthmaker renewing the moon and the evil spirits eating it away. Cycle after cycle, year after year……….

Bright Blessings for a Magickal Week!
