Inner Journey: A NEW LOOK AT OLD ATTITUDES

“I can change. I can live out my imagination instead of my memory. I can tie myself to my limitless potential instead of my limiting past.”
— Stephen Covey

I was eating lunch with a friend who shared that she disliked one of the vegetables on my plate and hadn’t eaten any since childhood. I suggested that sometimes our tastes change and maybe she could give it another try. She did, and to her surprise, sheenjoyed it. Her world became a little richer as she opened to new possibilities.

Is there something in your life you might be willing to give another try?

“Change. It has the power to uplift, to heal, to stimulate, surprise, open new doors, bring fresh experience and create excitement in life. Certainly it is worth the risk.”

Speech
“Speech is a mirror of the soul; as a man speaks, so is he.”

-Publius Syrus (85-43 B.D.)

I think this is really quite interesting. The words we speak come from within us. We think them, we articulate them. They come up with our breath, through our throats and over our tongues. They have an impact on us. It is important to speak truthfully, kindly, and with clarity. Are the words we use “nutritious” – or are they “toxic?” What are we feeding ourselves?

Speech
“Let us say what we feel, and feel what we say; let speech harmonize with life.”

-Seneca the Younger (5? B.C. – C.E. 65)

One way that we can be true to ourselves is with our speech. Are we saying what we mean? Are we meaning what we say? When we are in harmony with our words and our actions, we are in harmony with life. It takes too much time and energy to say things just because we are “supposed to.” It has to feel right, it has to resonate within us, for it to be real.

Inner Journey: WHAT IS SOUL CONSCIOUSNESS?

“You are a holistic being with both nondualistic energy and the energy of the physical plane as a part of your being at your disposal.”
— Wayne Dyer

Andrew Schneider helps us understand our human experience of being soul. He says, “Soul consciousness arises when we stand facing in opposite directions at the same time – toward eternity and toward time, toward infinity and toward space, toward unity and toward complexity. We stand in that dualism without being dualistic, for in consciousness we can accommodate the opposites. We do this by identifying with both. This identification results in the experience of being an individual while at the same time being the whole, and finding no contradiction in this experience.”

“Give your difference, welcome my difference, unify all difference in the larger whole — such is the law of growth. The unifying of difference is the eternal process of life — the creative synthesis, the highest act of creation.”

“Every moment of your life is infinitely creative and the universe is endlessly bountiful. Just put forth a clear enough request, and everything your heart desires must come to you.”

We hold the power to create whatever we desire. Our ability to manifest the changes we desire depends on the depth and passion of our beliefs and on the focus of our attention.

With this understanding, we, as individuals and as society, can design a whole new future for ourselves. Our challenge is to break free of society’s world view, to truly empower our imaginations to create brand new realities. It brings a whole new meaning to ‘vision.’

What do you passionately desire for your own life? For the planet?

Remember when we were little, our mother’s used to say: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” If we speak impulsively, we may come to regret it. Take your place in the World and be in your element all day long. Your practical mind and easy nature let you cruise through the regular maze that is daily life. If anything out of the ordinary arises, you’ll know instinctively how to approach it and resolve things to your satisfaction. Today may not be easy or effortless but it will be rich in success and approval – from yourself and probably others as well.

There’s a bumper sticker that reads: “Think Globally, Act Locally.” This can be applied to every area of our lives. If we expect clean air, and a clean environment, then it is up to us to do what we can, right where we are, to make this happen. If we expect peace on earth, then we are kind to people we meet, and do what we can to help others. Now let’s just say you’re a fisher-person, and let’s just say that I’ve rearranged the stars so that this is going to be the luckiest week of your life.

Whoohooo!

Tell me, next time you go out on your boat, will you take one pole, or many?

Many. I thought so.

Would you think, maybe for the glimmering of a moment, that as a lucky person, you won’t have to fish anymore, because the fish will come to you?

No. Probably not. You’ve always been one of the sharper tools in the shed.

So, tell me, why is it so easy for most to see that with luck, even, they still have to put themselves out there, and that the more they do, the greater the yield. Yet when it comes to life’s magic, thoughts becoming things, and the Universe conspiring on their behalf, they think their fish will come to them?

A lot of times we hear stories about entrepreneurs who say they didn’t know just how they were going to make their business work, they just knew they were going to do it. For three days, he tended the garden, performing no special rituals or asking anything further from the villagers…” So begins an intriguing Taoist parable, that is used here as a springboard into an exploration of synchronicity, and the idea of ‘being the change we wish to see in the world’. { read more }

Here you are, feeling frazzled, frustrated, and overwhelmed.
First, remember that we can’t hate ourselves back into peace, it’s—as cheesy it sounds—love that leads the way.

So, when you find yourself discombobulated, afraid, and miles away from your highest Self, pause. Breathe deeply. Get still. Be kind to yourself.

Inner Journey: EGO’S TRICKS

“One of the great dangers of transformational work is that the ego attempts to sidestep deep psychological work by leaping into the transcendent too soon. This is because the ego always fancies itself much more ‘advanced’ than it actually is.”
— Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson

The Tibetan teacher, Chogyam Trungpa, warned of the trap of spiritual materialism. He says we must be ever diligent to spot the ego’s use of the spiritual journey to further its own ends.

We may think it’s spiritual to yearn for divine connection. And yet, if the longing is to fill an emptiness inside, just how does this differ from the one who yearns for money or possessions to fill the inner void? Do we look to our spiritual practices as proof of our evolved consciousness or as protection against fears?

Any time we use spiritual disciplines to maintain our identity and security, we are not yet on the path of genuine spiritual development.

“Enlightenment is ego’s ultimate disappointment.”
— Chögyam Trungpa

A Note from the Universe

It’s me, the Universe, and I’ve heard a little rumor.

Seems someone on Earth is asking for their own thriving business and a steady income!!!! Phew, wouldn’t that be nice! Know anyone?

I thought so. Well, guess what?

I have one, and it’s ready for delivery!

Would you do me a little favor?

Would you tell them that in order to get it from here to there, all they have to do is close their eyes, count to three, click their heels, give thanks that it’s already in their life, and begin moving toward it?

No, no. Some of that’s “make believe,” but so is their thriving business and a steady income, until they stop asking, and start giving thanks and moving toward it.

Tallyho,

Goals
“The final goal of human effort is man’s self-transformation.”

-Lewis Mumford (1895-1990)

What I love about this quote is that it says “self-transformation,” not just “transformation.” Transformation is change, growth. We can’t change anyone but ourselves. We can’t grow for anyone but ourselves. When we realize, as a whole, how important it is for us to transform individually, and we each take responsibility for this, then great change will occur globally.

Inner Journey: ONE STEP AT A TIME

“What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step.”
— Antoine De Saint-Exupery

Does the prospect of changing and growing seem monumental to you? Just too much to tackle?

Then consider this approach. Take a simple step of affirming your openness to experience more or something new. Or a different first step might be to let go of judgment by embracing the neutral. Begin to see the people, activities and things around you as neither good nor bad.

A journey is made of many small steps. Don’t focus on a far-off destination if you’re not clear how to get there. Build a foundation that is solid for you. We get to new places one step at a time.

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
— Martin Luther King, Jr.

Goals
“The going is the goal.”

-Horace Kallen, 1952

This is another way of saying that the journey, not the destination, is our goal. We’re hear to be in the game, so we might as well play. Sometimes we have a good run, sometimes we score, and sometimes we fall down. As long as our heart is in it, we’re making progress.

“The denial and fear of death makes possession, possessiveness, and overconsumption possible. If we would just pull back a bit, slow down, and ask the “why” of each of our actions, based on the utter assurance of death, we would all be better off environmentally.” Playwright, poet, and essayist Cherrie Moraga sees the world as a place where the body knows and “the land has memory.” “Her writings have shaped fundamental aspects of contemporary woman of color feminist thought, including debates on ethnic nationalism, indigeneity, sexuality, and social justice. Inner Journey: ARE YOU AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT?

On the path of evolution, we move from being a willing and obedient member of the group to wanting to take control over our own lives. This is a necessary but difficult transition.

Andrew Schneider says, “At this point we are afraid of being ourselves. We are afraid of being unique and different. We are afraid of being individually powerful, and even successful. For all of these things stand against the old ways that told us that conformity was right and individualism was wrong.”

“For as long as we possibly can, we make a compromise. We try to live both lives – the dependent tribal life and the independent personal life – as contradictory and opposite as they are.

“We want approval from others. We want to be accepted and popular. We seek this comfort to overcome our fear and feel more secure. …So, at times when we conform, we don’t feel the fear of living. But we might lose the new sense of adventure, discovery, daring and enthusiasm for life that the questioning and questing have brought us.”

“Nature never repeats herself, and the possibilities of one human soul will never be found in another.”
— Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Family
“The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”

-Erma Bombeck, 1987

This is a good week to talk about family. I grew up reading Erma Bombeck’s columns – my mother could really relate to her. Erma had a great way of seeing the humor and light in the most absurd situations. This family, this group of people we’re somehow thrown together with, and with whom we share our tragedies and triumphs, is ultimately one of our greatest tools for learning in this lifetime. They challenge us, in ways no one else can, to grow.
