February Quotes

“Rich meanings of the prophet-Spring adorn,
Unseen, this colourless sky of folded showers,
And folded winds; no blossom in the bowers;
A poet’s face asleep in this grey morn.
Now in the midst of the old world forlorn
A mystic child is set in these still hours.
I keep this time, even before the flowers,
Sacred to all the young and the unborn.”

“Candlemas’ is the Christianized name for the holiday, of course. The older Pagan names were Imbolc and Oimelc. ‘Imbolc’ means, literally, ‘in the belly’ (of the Mother). For in the womb of Mother Earth, hidden from our mundane sight but sensed by a keener vision, there are stirrings. The seed that was planted in her womb at the solstice is quickening and the new year grows. ‘Oimelc’ means ‘milk of ewes’, for it is also lambing season. The holiday is also called ‘Brigit’s Day’, in honor of the great Irish Goddess Brigit. At her shrine, the ancient Irish capitol of Kildare, a group of 19 priestesses (no men allowed) kept a perpetual flame burning in her honor. She was considered a goddess of fire, patroness of smithcraft, poetry and healing (especially the healing touch of
midwifery).”

CANDLEMAS The Light Returns by Mike Nichols

It seems quite impossible that the holiday of Candlemas should be considered the beginning of spring. Here in the Heartland, February 2 may see a blanket of snow mantling the Mother. Or, if the snows have gone, you may be sure the days are filled with drizzle, slush, and steel-grey skies—the dreariest weather of the year. In short, the perfect time for a Pagan Festival of Lights. And as for spring, although this may seem a tenuous beginning, all the little buds, flowers, and leaves will have arrived on schedule before spring runs its course to Beltane.

Prayers to Brighid
Anon
These are some prayers to Brighid that I adapted from prayers to the Irish Saint Brigid. Comments are welcome.

Kindling The Fire
This morning, as I kindle the flame upon my hearth, I pray that the flame of Brighid may burn in my soul, and the souls of all I meet today.
I pray that no envy and malice, no hatred or fear, may smother the flame.
I pray that indifference and apathy, contempt and pride, may not pour like cold water on the flame.
Instead, may the spark of Brighid light the love in my soul, that it may burn brightly through the day.
And may I warm those that are lonely, whose hearts are cold and lifeless, so that all may know the comfort of Brighid’s love.

Covering The Fire
Brighid, preserve the fire, as You preserve us all.
Brighid, may its warmth remain in our midst, as You are always among us.
Brighid, may it rise to life in the morning, as You raise us to life.

Groundhog Day is a cross-quarter day
Every February 2 since 1887, a groundhog in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, has made his weather prediction, based on the appearance of the sun. Either it’s sunny and he sees his shadow, which, in folklore, means six more weeks of winter. Or it’s cloudy, and the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, meaning an early spring.

“It would be glorious to see mankind at leisure for once. It is nothing but work, work, work.”

Is relaxation possible only when we’re not working? No. With awareness and practice, we can be relaxed no matter what we are doing. In fact, when we work in a relaxed state, our productivity increases as our effort decreases.

For true relaxation, we need to connect with our bodies — to consciously and intentionally become aware of tension and release it.

That’s right. This is a dream.

You’re still asleep. Any minute now, an elephant might appear behind you wearing a pink tutu and tennis shoes. Or maybe the phone will ring, and it’ll be Abraham Lincoln to ask why you’re late for the ball. Or perhaps Oprah Winfrey is down the hall, live audience in tow, about to introduce you as her new favorite author. Anything can happen in a dream, anything, without regard to the past, without regard to logic, and you never have to figure out the “hows.”

Learn from your dreams, because the stuff of time and space is no different. Forget your past. Pitch the logic. And drop the cursed hows.

Regret

“Regrets are as personal as fingerprints.”

-Margaret Culkin Banning, 1958

Regret is personal because it really affects the one who is going through it. And we each experience regret in a different way. Some regrets are offered up with an apology, others eat away at a person. They can be big or small regrets – but we each feel them in a different way. Since we are here to learn and grow, it would be difficult to go through this life without any regrets. As long as we recognize that we are where we are because of everything –what we regret and what we don’t – then we will continue to move along the path, learning and growing all the way,

Inner Journey: THE KEY TO CREATIVITY

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge islimited. Imagination encircles the world.”
— Albert Einstein

Do you know the key to creativity?

It rhymes with weed. It produces the oak tree. We often eat it or grind it up for flour. It can mean cause or origination. You guessed it. It is SEED.

Our minds love to associate one thing to another. But as we get stuck in very fixed patterns of thinking, we think of fewer and fewer connections. We are ruled by habits, associations and automatic responses. So we must stimulate our thinking with lots of different seeds to chart new paths in our brains.

“Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive.”

Sleep

“Of all the soft, delicious functions of nature this is the chiefest; what a happiness it is to man, when the anxieties and passions of the day are over.”

-Laurence Sterne (1713-1768)

Sometimes it just feels like a big relief to finally crawl into bed at night. Knowing that the day is done, that we’ve done all we can do with the time that we had, we can sleep peacefully. Tomorrow is another day. The sun comes up in the morning and we begin again. But while we sleep, we can be still. It is a simple pleasure to close our eyes and tie the day up with a sigh.

Inner Journey: WHAT IS SOUL CONSCIOUSNESS?

“You are a holistic being with both nondualistic energy and the energy of the physical plane as a part of your being at your disposal.”
— Wayne Dyer

Andrew Schneider helps us understand our human experience of being soul. He says, “Soul consciousness arises when we stand facing in opposite directions at the same time – toward eternity and toward time, toward infinity and toward space, toward unity and toward complexity. We stand in that dualism without being dualistic, for in consciousness we can accommodate the opposites. We do this by identifying with both. This identification results in the experience of being an individual while at the same time being the whole, and finding no contradiction in this experience.”

“Give your difference, welcome my difference, unify all difference in the larger whole — such is the law of growth. The unifying of difference is the eternal process of life — the creative synthesis, the highest act of creation.”

Speech
“Speech is silvern, silence is golden; speech is human, silence is divine.”

-German Proverb

Sometimes we can’t help ourselves, we go on and on thinking we need to fill the empty spaces with words. But the truth is that a lot of communication happens in the silence. We relate to each other on a whole different level when we have time to just “be” with each other. Silence invites God to be a part of the conversation

Daily Tarot: The High Priestess

Be inconspicuous if you can, stay out of your own way, and see how many things go right all by themselves. Real luck is looking for you today, but you can chase it away by trying to have too much control over everything. This is not a day to micromanage. Rather, listen to your hunches, and don’t demand solid answers or too many facts or figures.

A Yuletide Toast

See the Yule log draped with holly, glossy green and scarlet hued;

Adorned with ribbons and with gifts that Mother Nature grew.

Shaped by hands both large and small, a labor of love and joy;

To celebrate the Suns rebirth and a brand new season to enjoy.

So gather round and raise a cup to toast both log and coming light;

We’ll keep our vigil by the fire on this the longest night.

“The Holly King, represents the Death aspect of the God at this time of year; and the Oak King, represents the opposite aspect of Rebirth (these roles are reversed at Midsummer). This can be likened to the Divine Child’s birth. The myth of the Holly King/Oak King probably originated from the Druids to whom these two trees were highly sacred. The Oak King (God of the Waxing Year) kills the Holly King (God of the Waning Year) at Yule (the Winter Solstice). The Oak King then reigns supreme until Litha (the Summer Solstice) when the two battle again, this time with the Holly King victorious. Examples of the Holly King’s image can be seen in our modern Santa Claus.”

Inner Journey: THE GIFT OF JOY

“Joy is prayer – Joy is strength – Joy is love – Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls. She gives most who gives with Joy.”
— Mother Teresa

Some people unconsciously believe it’s not okay to feel more joyful than the people around them. Out of a mistaken sense of caring, they squelch their joy and tune in to the sadness of the one they are with.

In truth, joy is one of the greatest gifts we can give to people around us. Those who are unhappy need our joy, not our sadness.

“Never miss a joy in this world of trouble … that’s my theory! … Happiness, like mercy, is twice blest: it blesses those most intimately associated with it and it blesses all those who see it, hear it, touch it orbreathe the same atmosphere.”
— Kate Douglas Wiggin

“Yule, is when the dark half of the year relinquishes to the light half. Starting the next morning at sunrise, the sun climbs just a little higher and stays a little longer in the sky each day. Known as Solstice Night, or the longest night of the year, much celebration was to be had as the ancestors awaited the rebirth of the Oak King, the Sun King, the Giver of Life that warmed the frozen Earth and made her to bear forth from seeds protected through the fall and winter in her womb. Bonfires were lit in the fields, and crops and trees were “wassailed” with toasts of spiced cider.”

“At the heart of personality is the need to feel a sense of being lovable without having to qualify for that acceptance.”

How do you see yourself as unlovable?

Take a few minutes to write down why you perceive yourself to be unlovable. Look at the list and see if you can identify where those characterizations originated. Can you pinpoint old messages from parents, teachers, and friends that led you to negative conclusions about yourself? Are those messages valid today?

The beliefs we adopt as children usually don’t hold when we view them objectively as adults. Can you let them go? Can you begin to see yourself as a unique expression of life, a genuine gift to the world?

I especially love the part where you, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, finally declare “enough is enough” (actually, far more colorful language is used because we don’t have a rating system here) and you begin visualizing, putting up dream photos on the computer, refrigerator, and mirrors, and start performing simple acts of faith, as if your dreams had already come true, every single bloomin’ day.

The transformation that follows really pushes the envelope on believability. Except, of course, it’s a true story!

Definitely two thumbs-up.

New Moon / Balsamic Moon

Time: From the day of the new moon until 3 days after.

In astronomical terminology, the phrase new moon is the lunar phase that occurs when the Moon, in its monthly orbital motion around Earth, lies between Earth and the Sun and is therefore in conjunction with the Sun as seen from Earth. At this time, the dark (unilluminated) portion of the Moon faces almost directly toward Earth, so that the Moon is not visible to the naked eye.

Inner Journey:

BELIEVE IN YOUR OWN SUCCESS

“What you believe yourself to be, you are.”
— Claude M. Bristol

Do you believe, deep down inside of you, that you can succeed in what you want to do?

Beliefs are strong, and they have the power to attract what is believed to us. If we doubt our ability to succeed, if we in fact believe we WON’T succeed, then sure enough, that’s what will happen.

What do you believe about yourself? You have the power to change your beliefs, and that will change your outcome. Set goals you believe you can accomplish. Your beliefs will shape your actions. As you achieve these goals, you’ll begin to believe you are capable of succeeding and of doing even more.

“It is better to believe than to disbelieve; in so doing you bring everything to the realm of possibility.”
— Albert Einstein

“Believe it can be done. When you believe something can be done, really believe, your mind will find the ways to do it. Believing a solution paves the way to solution.”
— Dr. David Schwartz

We can also tailor the foods we eat to the phases of the moon to tap into that power and to work with the rhythm of our bodies and emotions too.

Daily Good: How Place Can Connect Us to Gratitude

“Certain places can evoke a profound experience of gratitude for us. Have you ever noticed how your favorite bakery, or neighborhood park, or familiar church, or your own living room, can bring you profound gratitude that you feel in your body?…Place connects us to gratitude, and gratitude connects us to place. And this gratitude also finds its place in our bodies. As we find gratitude in a sense of place like a retreat center, our home, a park, a library or bookstore, we also find gratitude in a sense of place within our hearts and bodies.” { read more }

EarthSky News: See Venus-Saturn pairing on December 10

Depending on where you live worldwide, Venus and Saturn will snuggle up most closely together on the sky’s dome on December 10 or 11, 2019. On either date, though, Venus and Saturn will appear plenty close together in your sky. For the next several days, look for this bright pair of lights to pop out rather low in the southwest as dusk ebbs into nightfall.

“Every violation of truth is not only a sort of suicide in the liar, but is a stab at the health of human society.”

Environment

“I believe natural beauty has a necessary place in the spiritual development of any individual or any society. I believe that whenever we destroy beauty, or whenever we substitute something man-made and artificial for a natural feature of the earth, we have retarded some part of man’s spiritual growth.”

-Rachel Carson (1907-1964)

When we talk about the oneness of the universe – we’re not just talking about people. We live with and amongst nature. We share this planet with everything that is here. We’re all made up of the same “stuff.” We need nature and it’s nutrients to nourish ourselves! Nature nourishes our bodies, and it also nurtures our spirit. The profound peace that we feel when we are in the mountains, or under a starry sky, is food for our soul.

“Perhaps the most famous icon of the holiday is the jack-o-lantern. Various authorities attribute it to either Scottish or Irish origin. However, it seems clear that it was used as a lantern by people who traveled the road this night, the scary face to frighten away spirits or faeries who might otherwise lead one astray. Set on porches and in windows, they cast the same spell of protection over the household. (The American pumpkin seems to have forever superseded the European gourd as the jack-o-lantern of choice.) Bobbing for apples may well represent the remnants of a Pagan ‘baptism’ rite called a ‘seining’, according to some writers. The water-filled tub is a latter-day Cauldron of Regeneration, into which the novice’s head is immersed. The fact that the participant in this folk game was usually blindfolded with hands tied behind the back also puts one in mind of a traditional Craft initiation ceremony.”

EarthSky News: Moon goes by Jupiter on Halloween

On October 30 and 31, 2019, watch for two brilliant luminaries – the crescent moon and the dazzling planet Jupiter – to pop out in close vicinity of one another as dusk deepens into nightfall. Given clear skies, you should have no trouble seeing either world, because the moon and Jupiter rank as the 2nd-brightest and 4th-brightest celestial luminaries, respectively. By early November, a larger crescent moon will leave king planet Jupiter behind to join up with the ringed planet Saturn.

Inner Journey:

REVIEW AND RECOMMIT

“Few people have any next, they live from hand to mouth without a plan, and are always at the end of their line.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just think: When we are driving, we know where we want to go and we plot out our route. When we plan and prepare a meal, we follow a recipe and monitor the food as it cooks.

How much attention do we give to planning the direction of our lives?

Taking the time to review our quality of life gives us a chance to re-evaluate what we are doing and where we want to go. It lets us fine-tune our direction, to ensure we are on track for what we most want.

Stop and think about your last 6 months. What did you learn? What would you like to do differently? Where do you want to recommit?

“Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.”
— A. A. Milne

“Always have a plan, and believe in it. Nothing happens by accident.”

Vision

“Visionary people are visionary partly because of the very great many things they don’t see.”

Berkeley Rice

Isn’t this so true! Visionary people don’t seem to see obstacles – or at least, they don’t see them as obstacles, maybe just as challenges. I’ve heard so many successful business people say that when going in, they didn’t even know what could go wrong. They were so focused on looking at their vision that all the obstacles were a blur. They were so committed to following through with their vision that they couldn’t even imagine anything stopping them. And they turned something that vision into a reality.
