Pagan Library: Samhain by Kenny Klein (poem)

Red leaves are carried in the salt west wind
And turn to brown on dry soil.
The sun is bright still, but not warm
On the last rich gold of scattered fall.
The great wheel turns, another year
Old, bright gold with death.

In antiquity, butter was used for fuel in lamps as a substitute for oil. The Butter Tower of Rouen Cathedral was erected in the early 16th century when Archbishop Georges d’Amboise authorized the burning of butter instead of oil, which was scarce at the time, during Lent.

Patheos-Pagan: Simple Witchery: Reclaiming the Crone

The Maiden, Mother, Crone (MMC) archetype is taking a beating in many circles of modern witchcraft. Some scholarly witches call out the MMC as perhaps the earliest device of the patriarchy to keep women in their place, primarily by entrapping women in the duties motherhood and then rendering them worthless as they age beyond fertility

Inner Journey:

SPACE TO EXPLORE

“No one can find his work, what he really wants to put all of himself into, when everything he does he is made to do by others. This kind of searching must be done freely or not at all.”
— John Holt

We all need space — free from demands, deadlines, expectations and judgments — to explore who we are and what life is all about. Free time, with absolutely no agenda, is rich with potential. How can we grow if we have no space and freedom to dream?

“Deny children — or anyone else — the chance to do ‘nothing,’ and we may be denying them the chance to do ‘something’ — to find and do any work that is truly important to themselves or to someone else.”
— John Holt

Wonder

“Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.”

-Helen Keller, 1902

We see what we choose to see. Helen Keller could not physically see with her eyes- and yet she could see with her heart, she could experience wonder. Her life, and the way she chose to live her life, is such an inspiration to us. There is wonder all around us, but do we choose to see it?

Daily Tarot: Justice

You have a great force of will today and it could be easy to push around someone less driven than you. Try to do things right the first time so there’s less “clean-up” tomorrow, when people may be less forgiving or understanding. Do what’s important first, rather than what is easiest or the most fun. You can do that some other time but today it won’t work

Daily Tarot: The Lovers

Preconceived notions and old ideas could make it hard to deal with all the new and different situations and requests that could crop up today. It’s possible that you’re not actually being presented choices that must be made now or soon. Just as likely you’re being tested or tempted. It may be hard to resist a knee jerk reaction or two. Well, I won’t beat around the bush—today kinda sucked.
We all have those days when we feel like we don’t belong. Today was like that for me.
It was the sort of day that exists in a thousand shades of uncertainty and self-doubt.
I wondered if I looked as awkward on the outside as I felt on the inside. I wondered how the heck everyone else looked so put-together and shiny—meanwhile, I feel like I’m drowning.

Daily Good: George Orwell: Some Thoughts on the Common Toad

Novelist and essayist Eric Arthur Blair, pen name George Orwell, is perhaps best known for his prescient depictions of creeping totalitarianism and social injustice as captured in 1984 and Down and Out in Paris and London. Blair is also recognized as an avowed appreciator of the living world who intuitively understood nature’s role in transforming the human spirit in the aftermath of war: “I think that by retaining one’s childhood love of such things as trees, fishes, butterflies and to return to my first instance toads, one makes a peaceful and decent future a little more probable…” In his thought-provoking essay, Isaac Yuen explores the remarkable capacity for wonder and compassion that exemplifies Blair’s writing in “Some Thoughts on the Common Toad,” an ode to one of Earth’s most humble inhabitants

Inner Journey:

BREAK OUT OF ROUTINE

“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.”
— Nietzsche

Where do you need to do some ‘out of the box’ thinking and living?

We are creatures of habit, of patterns. While initially the habits may have served us, they may now be limiting our ability to experience more of life.

What aspect of your life has become routine? How might you bring new life to it? Do some outrageous dreaming! Then do something completely different today.

“When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.”
— George Washington Carver

Today’s Deity: Ix Chel – Mayan Goddess(es) of the Moon, Fertility and Death

Ix Chel (sometimes spelled Ixchel) is, according to longstanding archaeological tradition, the Mayan moon goddess, one of the most important and ancient of Maya deities, connected to fertility and procreation. Her name Ix Chel has been translated as “Lady Rainbow” or as “She of the Pale Face,” an allusion to the moon’s surface.

Self-Realization
“King Henry: Presume not that I am the thing I was;
For God doth know, so shall the world perceive,
That I have turn’d away my former self.”

-Shakespeare (1564-1616) Henry IV, 1597

I like this because Shakespeare says here “I have made the choice- I have chosen to change” – and that is such a powerful statement. We always have that choice. We can always “reinvent” ourselves. And when we mean it, it works! There are a lot of people in the media who are examples of this – the former “loose image” actress turned mother and Sunday school teacher – the former rock-n-roller who is now a gospel singer. Part of this is knowing who we are – and understanding that how the world perceives us, how we present ourselves, is totally up to us.
