Daily Good: Working for Peace in a Violent World
“The work of Joseph Campbell and countless others makes it clear that the destructive aspects of the world, and the knowledge that each of us will die, has forever been a deep challenge to reconcile with a celebration of life. It’s not getting easier. There’s a web of relationships in a globalized world that make it difficult to live without being destructive. Even when sincerely striving to be peaceful, we may still be violent. When trying to help, we can cause harm. The laptop I use to write about peace runs on Congolese conflict minerals. Even something as simple as a toothbrush has a vast meaning when we explore it.” So where do we start? Matthew Legge shares more in this excerpt from his new book, “Are We Done Fighting?” { read more } http://www.dailygood.org/story/2365/working-for-peace-in-a-violent-world-matthew-legge/

Although it’s intrinsically a bright object, Mercury often appears as this photo shows it, in a sky washed with twilight colors. Seeing it often requires a search. On the other hand, for much of every year,

Patheos-Pagan: Bewitching Birch… A Tree of Many Magicks, and the Devil
The Paper Birch, or Betula Papyrifera is a shorter lived birch tree growing in North America, with the folk names of Beithe, Berke, and Bouleau, to name a few. These trees are often one of the first species to reestablish itself after a forest fire, which is kinda ironic knowing some of the darker folklore of this magickal tree. For a dark side this tree has…

Inner Journey:
BRING AWARENESS TO YOUR GENEROSITY
“Generosity lies less in giving much than in giving at the right moment.”
— Jean De La Bruyère
While it’s important to give, it’s also essential that we not give more than we can afford. Only you can determine the appropriate amount of time or money you can give away, but it should not cause you hardship. We need to respect our own needs as well as the needs of others.
When do you give more than you can afford?
“Generosity is another quality which, like patience, letting go, non-judging, and trust, provides a solid foundation for mindfulness practice. You might experiment with using the cultivation of generosity as a vehicle for deep self-observation and inquiry as well as an exercise in giving.”
— Jon Kabat Zinn

Independence
“The first of earthly blessings, independence.”
-Edward Gibbon (1737-1794)
Independence is a big word, and one that held a lot of meaning for our forefathers who wrote the Declaration of Independence 227 years ago. It seems like a long time ago, but then it’s so relatively recent compared with some of these quotes we read here, some dating back thousands of years. I remember when our country celebrated it’s bicentennial in 1976. In my hometown, Palo Alto, California, all the fire hydrants were painted red, white and blue to celebrate! I was just a little kid then, so I don’t think I really understood the significance of that day. But I do now. Independence is indeed a blessing.

Daily Tarot: The Pope
People may look to you to get some enthusiasm back into their lives. If sagging a little in spirit yourself, you can still inspire others. This can cheer you up, too, so don’t underestimate a small glimmer of joy in something that you genuinely love. No one has to agree with you. They only have to allow you to do what feels best to you – and you to them
