It is only on the condition of humility and reverence before the world that our species will be able to remain in it.

Wendell Berry –

To Live and Love with a Dying World

“In the summer of 2019, the climate activist Tim DeChristopher sat down with Wendell Berry. Berry is a poet and activist, author of over forty books, and a celebrated advocate for localism, ecological health, and small-scale farming. DeChristopher, as Bidder 70, disrupted a Bureau of Land Management oil and gas auction in 2008 by outbidding oil companies for parcels around Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in Utah. Imprisoned for twenty-one months for his actions, he has used his platform to spread the urgency of the climate crisis and the need for bold, confrontational action to create a just and healthy world.” Orion magazine shares their powerful conversation here

Inner Journey: BELIEVE IN YOUR OWN SUCCESS

“What you believe yourself to be, you are.”
— Claude M. Bristol

Do you believe, deep down inside of you, that you can succeed in what you want to do?

Beliefs are strong, and they have the power to attract what is believed to us. If we doubt our ability to succeed, if we in fact believe we WON’T succeed, then sure enough, that’s what will happen.

What do you believe about yourself? You have the power to change your beliefs, and that will change your outcome. Set goals you believe you can accomplish. Your beliefs will shape your actions. As you achieve these goals, you’ll begin to believe you are capable of succeeding and of doing even more.

“It is better to believe than to disbelieve; in so doing you bring everything to the realm of possibility.”
— Albert Einstein

“Believe it can be done. When you believe something can be done, really believe, your mind will find the ways to do it. Believing a solution paves the way to solution.”

Expectations
“We would have to settle for the elegant goal of becoming ourselves.”

-William Styron

We set goals. We reach goals. We set new goals. And what happens? All along the way we are learning and growing. Eventually we find that the goals are somewhat arbitrary. There may be different ways for each of us to “get there” but we arrive at the same place: discovering the beauty, the wisdom, the joy within us – the beauty, the wisdom, the joy that is us

Mindfulness is known to have many advantages, including reducing stress, increasing awareness, improving physical health, and more. However, when it comes to lowering stress levels, without also practicing acceptance, we might not see the results we hope for. “Mindfulness practices that specifically emphasize acceptance teach us a nonjudgmental attitude toward our experiences — meaning, learning not to label our thoughts, feelings, or experiences as good or bad, and trying not to change or resist them in any way.” By learning to accept our difficult experiences, we can allow them to run their course and naturally dissipate, this is not the same thing as being passive. Inner Journey:

VALUING ALL WORK

“We honor life when we work. The type of work is not important: the fact of work is. All work feeds the soul if it is honest and done to the best of our abilities and if it brings joy to others.”
— Matthew Fox

What value do we unconsciously (or consciously) place on different kinds of work? How do we rank the status of different jobs? How much more do we value the big- paying jobs over others?

Just as we need to honour ourselves for doing what needs to be done, we can equally honour all others who look after life through their efforts, no matter what they may be. We can release judgment that assigns more importance to some occupations than others.

“Now in order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: They must be fit for it: they must not do too much of it: and they must have a sense of success in it — not a doubtful sense, such as needs some testimony of others for its confirmation, but a sure sense, or rather knowledge, that so much work has been done well, and fruitfully done, whatever the world may say or think about it.”

Travel

“Why do you wonder that globe-trotting does not help you, seeing that you always take yourself with you? The reason which set you wandering is ever at your heels.”

-Socrates (470? – 399 B.C.)

Even Socrates was saying, way back when, that we can’t run away from our problems, we can’t run away from ourselves! We may end up in totally different surroundings, but we don’t change just because the scenery has changed. Travel doesn’t change us, we change ourselves because we choose to do so, by facing our issues and dealing with them. Travel can help us to learn and grow, and we can choose to take that “new and improved” version of ourselves with us.

Daily Good: Working for Peace in a Violent World

“The work of Joseph Campbell and countless others makes it clear that the destructive aspects of the world, and the knowledge that each of us will die, has forever been a deep challenge to reconcile with a celebration of life. It’s not getting easier. There’s a web of relationships in a globalized world that make it difficult to live without being destructive. Even when sincerely striving to be peaceful, we may still be violent. When trying to help, we can cause harm. The laptop I use to write about peace runs on Congolese conflict minerals. Even something as simple as a toothbrush has a vast meaning when we explore it.” So where do we start? Inner Journey:

BRING AWARENESS TO YOUR GENEROSITY

“Generosity lies less in giving much than in giving at the right moment.”
— Jean De La Bruyère

While it’s important to give, it’s also essential that we not give more than we can afford. Only you can determine the appropriate amount of time or money you can give away, but it should not cause you hardship. We need to respect our own needs as well as the needs of others.

When do you give more than you can afford?

“Generosity is another quality which, like patience, letting go, non-judging, and trust, provides a solid foundation for mindfulness practice. You might experiment with using the cultivation of generosity as a vehicle for deep self-observation and inquiry as well as an exercise in giving.”

Independence

“The first of earthly blessings, independence.”

-Edward Gibbon (1737-1794)

Independence is a big word, and one that held a lot of meaning for our forefathers who wrote the Declaration of Independence 227 years ago. It seems like a long time ago, but then it’s so relatively recent compared with some of these quotes we read here, some dating back thousands of years. I remember when our country celebrated it’s bicentennial in 1976. In my hometown, Palo Alto, California, all the fire hydrants were painted red, white and blue to celebrate! I was just a little kid then, so I don’t think I really understood the significance of that day. But I do now. Independence is indeed a blessing.
