ThoughtCo: The History of Halloween or Samhain, Day of the Dead

Halloween or Samhain had its beginnings in an ancient, pre-Christian Celtic festival of the dead. The Celtic peoples, who were once found all over Europe, divided the year by four major holidays. According to their calendar, the year began on a day corresponding to Nov. 1 on our present calendar.

We probably don’t need to preface this with much background of the intensity of this year thus far.
It’s a given at this point, whether we look to the worldly chaos or to the undertones of astrology to “make sense” of it all.

Researchers map the insects by where they sing.

Crickets and katydids sing at night to attract mates. You might hear their songs from a backyard deck, but would expect the cacophony to be much louder out in the wilderness.

On October 13, 2020, Mars comes to opposition in Earth’s sky for the first time since July 27, 2018. In mid-October, our planet Earth – in its smaller orbit around the sun – will pass more or less between the sun and Mars. Inner Journey: SUPPORT OTHERS WITH YOUR PRESENCE

“The purpose of therapy is not to remove suffering but TO MOVE THROUGH IT to an enlarged consciousness that can sustain the polarity of painful opposites.”
— James Hollis

How do we support others who are suffering?

When we understand how soul works through us, we begin to see how pain generates the impulse to change. We see that our aim in supporting someone is NOT to get rid of their pain and suffering. Instead, we want to assist them to understand what the pain istrying to teach them — to find meaning in their distress.

Often, all we need do is be fully present to them. It also helps to be present to our own experience and genuine in our feelings. Living our own truth helps create the space for the other person to live theirs.

“The first duty of love is to listen.”
— Paul Tillich

“With the gift of listening comes the gift of healing.”
— Catherine de Hueck Doherty

Study
“Study the teachings of the Great Sages of all sects impartially.”

-Gampopa (C.E. 12th cent.)

All of the Great Sages would say the same thing. Would a Sage be a Sage if he or she said: “I know everything, look no further”? No! We’d laugh! The brightest, most intelligent people know that there is always more to learn. They know that there is always knowledge to share. And they know that wisdom can be found anywhere, that there is not one particular place that we need to go to attain it. “Impartially” is a great word – without judgment, without bias – and with an open mind.
