ThoughtCo: The History of Halloween or Samhain, Day of the Dead

Halloween or Samhain had its beginnings in an ancient, pre-Christian Celtic festival of the dead. The Celtic peoples, who were once found all over Europe, divided the year by four major holidays. According to their calendar, the year began on a day corresponding to Nov. 1 on our present calendar.

Elephant Journal: Mars Square Pluto Transit: an Opportunity to Reclaim Misplaced Power. {October 9 & December 20}

We probably don’t need to preface this with much background of the intensity of this year thus far.
It’s a given at this point, whether we look to the worldly chaos or to the undertones of astrology to “make sense” of it all.

Treehugger: Crickets and Katydids Sing Louder in the Suburbs
Researchers map the insects by where they sing.

Crickets and katydids sing at night to attract mates. You might hear their songs from a backyard deck, but would expect the cacophony to be much louder out in the wilderness.

EarthSky News: Mars to reach opposition October 13

On October 13, 2020, Mars comes to opposition in Earth’s sky for the first time since July 27, 2018. In mid-October, our planet Earth – in its smaller orbit around the sun – will pass more or less between the sun and Mars. As seen from Earth, Mars will appear opposite the sun: in the east at sunset, at its highest at midnight, setting in the west at sunrise.

Patheos-Pagan: October Magic and a Mirror Spell

Welcome to October

Obviously, October is particularly special because of Samhain (Hallowmas/All Hallows) at the end of the month. It is a period between times. The leaves are changing, and the air is crisp and clear as the dark nights begin to draw in.

Pagan Playlist: A Ka Dua – A sacred chant in ancient Egyptian

“The purpose of therapy is not to remove suffering but TO MOVE THROUGH IT to an enlarged consciousness that can sustain the polarity of painful opposites.”
— James Hollis

How do we support others who are suffering?

When we understand how soul works through us, we begin to see how pain generates the impulse to change. We see that our aim in supporting someone is NOT to get rid of their pain and suffering. Instead, we want to assist them to understand what the pain istrying to teach them — to find meaning in their distress.

Often, all we need do is be fully present to them. It also helps to be present to our own experience and genuine in our feelings. Living our own truth helps create the space for the other person to live theirs.

“The first duty of love is to listen.”
— Paul Tillich

“With the gift of listening comes the gift of healing.”
— Catherine de Hueck Doherty

“Study the teachings of the Great Sages of all sects impartially.”

-Gampopa (C.E. 12th cent.)

All of the Great Sages would say the same thing. Would a Sage be a Sage if he or she said: “I know everything, look no further”? No! We’d laugh! The brightest, most intelligent people know that there is always more to learn. They know that there is always knowledge to share. And they know that wisdom can be found anywhere, that there is not one particular place that we need to go to attain it. “Impartially” is a great word – without judgment, without bias – and with an open mind.

Here was October, here
Was ruddy October, the old harvester,
Wrapped like a beggared sachem in a coat
Of tattered tanager and partridge feathers.

Spirituality & Health: Yes, Grownups Need a Bedtime

Getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night can be challenging enough. Kids come pussyfooting in and wake us up at 2 a.m. Or we stay up too late binge-watching TV, or we burn the midnight oil on a work project. As if getting enough sleep isn’t already a high bar to reach, researchers tell us to also keep an eye on irregular sleep patterns. For this week’s Healthy Habit, let’s look at three reasons adults need regular bedtimes

MBG: Scottish doctors prescribe bird-watching, walking and other ‘nature prescriptions’

Mother Nature offers amazing benefits. A stroll in the fresh air can clear your head, relax your body and just make you feel better. Now doctors in Scotland are encouraging some patients to get outdoors for some natural medicine.

Doctors in Shetland, an archipelago of Scotland, are going to start prescribing bird-watching, taking rambling walks and picking up driftwood from the beach to help with health and well-being.

Daily Good: Myron Eshowky: A Deeper Listening

“When I was 6 years old, I began to go for an hour every day, before school had started, to work with a speech therapist who taught me to put my hand on her throat, and my throat, and then focus on matching her vibration as she would make a sound, because I had to learn how to talk. One of the things I noted right away was that when we matched vibration, I became really connected with her. It was a feeling of connection in my heart, a feeling of love that I would feel for her in those moments.” Myron Eshowsky is a shamanic healer, mediator, consultant and author who was born with congenital severe hearing loss that he learnt to adapt into a skill for deep listening.

Utah’s Logan Canyon is putting on quite a show. As autumn sets in, the forests have transformed into a dazzling display of colors.

Inner Journey:

“It ain’t so much trouble to get rich as it is to tell when we have got rich.”
— Josh Billings

How do you define ‘rich’?

If you want greater wealth, what does that mean for you? A large annual income? If so, how large? A beautiful home? Health? Security? Happiness? To be in service?

Get really specific about what would bring you a rich life. There are no right and wrong answers here. Don’t judge your desires. Just dig deep to discover what it is that you really want. If you want things, explore what qualities of life those things representto you.

“No one can tell whether they are richer or poor by turning to their ledger. It is the heart that makes a person rich. One is rich according to what one is, not according to what one has.”
— Henry Ward Beecher

“If we command our wealth, we shall be rich and free. If our wealth commands us, we are poor indeed.”
— Edmund Burke

“Tomorrow I plan to work, work, from early until late. In fact I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.”

-Martin Luther

Martin Luther knew that with so much work to do that he needed help. And he knew where to go for help and guidance. The more clear our thoughts, the more direction we allow ourselves to receive, then the faster and easier we will get there, and the more we will accomplish with the least amount of effort.
