Celtic Tree Month of Rowan January 21 – February 17

Rowan by Irina Naumets/freeimages.com

Celtic Tree Month of Rowan / Luis (Lweesh) January 21 – February 17.

TREE INFOMATION

The Rowan tree is also known as the Mountain Ash and is a member of the rose family. They can be found growing among ancient settlements and ruins in Europe where they grow “like weeds”, although many of these trees were planted there as well. Rowans can grow almost anywhere and do well in poor soil, which would explain their growth in many areas. It also grows well in high altitude .This tree grows up to 40 ft. in height and produces flowers in May, after which come the red berries. The berries are said to be sacred food of the gods which were jealously guarded and kept away from man. The tree itself has a round, open top crown and the leaves which turn red in the fall are 4-8 inches in length and oblong with serrated edges along the point. The berries grow in clusters and each berry has a small design that resembles a pentagram on it. It was this pentagram “design” that linked this tree to witchcraft during the 15th and 16th centuries, it’s reputation became so negative that herbalist’s stopped using it for fear of being labeled as a witch.

The bark from the Rowan tree is used for tanning leather and making dye, while the berries are edible and make great jams and jellies. The berries are also still used in herbal medicine as a tea for treating diarrhea and they are very high in vitamin C which make them useful for treating colds.

ROWAN IN MYTH & MAGICK

Rowan is also known as a fairy tree and as such it is not advisable to cut branches from the tree itself. If you need to cut branches from one you should always leave the Fae a gift of yourself, like hair or fingernail clippings. By using this tree it is said that you will be protected by the Fae themselves. However, fallen branches are the best if you are going to use the wood. Rowan is thought to be one of the sacred druid trees and can be found growing near many of the ancient stone circles and is said to have played a main role in some of their ceremonies.

In popular folklore Rowan trees could be planted next to your home as protection against lightning and to promote good luck. Sprigs of Rowan could also be hung over doors in the home to ward off the evil eye or if you wore one, it kept the fairies from kidnapping you. They were even planted in churchyards to watch over the dead and protect the living from ghosts. One very popular European custom that was still being used approximately 100 years ago was the construction of rowan wood crosses. These “ornaments” of protection were made from twigs and tied with red thread. Every home had one over the front door as did seedbeds, barns and pigsty’s. They were also given to babies before they could be baptized. At Beltane the berries were sewn into a circle, and hung over windows to prevent lightning strikes or strung into necklaces to ward off the evil eye. The berries were also added to healing charms to help the patient to recover faster.

Runestaves were at one time made from Rowan wood simply because of it’s protective powers as are wands and dowsing rods.

Use Rowan in spells for blessings, grounding & centering, protection, warding against psychic attack, protection against enchantment.

ROWAN PEOPLE

People born in the Month of Rowan are visionaries and strong humanitarians. They are very passionate in what they believe in and can lean toward over-zealous at times. New Moon Rowan people (born in the 1st two weeks of the month) are easily frustrated with others who fail to see or help with the greater awareness of issues like racism, bigotry and gereal ignorance. Full Moon Rowan People (born in the last 2 weeks of the month) tend to make big promises, which are usually more than they can handle. They come through to an extent but are unable to completely follow through.

Daily Good: Creativity & COVID-19

Our genius is to understand and stand beneath the set of stars present at our birth, and from that place, to seek the hidden single star, over the night horizon, we did not know we were following.

  • David Whyte –

Creativity & COVID-19

“In some recent discussions with friends who are also creatives, I have heard a variety of responses to the question, ‘How has Covid-19 affected your creativity?’Some have been inspired to create new work. Others have spoken about a year of fallowness. It’s a term we rarely if ever hear in a culture devoted to–or better put, obsessed with–constant productivity. Take agribusiness: every acre and every creature must give maximum yield all the time, even though that is un-natural. Nature functions in cycles, and one part of that is rest, which leads to renewal. Traditionally, that was the way people understood cultivation: “And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and gather in the increase thereof; but the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie fallow…” Mirka Knaster shares more in this thoughtful essay. { read more }

Inner Journey: REVIEW YOUR LIFE

“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.”
— James Levin

Take a few minutes today to reflect on what has happened recently and to put the last week in perspective. What made an impact on you this last week? What do you want to set as a goal for next week?

Reflection helps us step back from the details of our lives and see the bigger picture with fresh eyes. It’s worth a few moments of your time. Review your week and come up with at least one conclusion, insight or learning and write it in your journal.

“Just because we increase the speed of information doesn’t mean we can increase the speed of decisions. Pondering, reflecting and ruminating are undervalued skills in our culture.”

Sleep
“Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.”

-Thomas Dekker

Any doctor will tell you that sleep is an important aspect of our overall health. This is the time when we can really rest and heal. We go, go, go all day long – we put so much stress on our minds and bodies working all the time, and running around everywhere. When we sleep this is the only time we really don’t expect ourselves to do anything! And this is the time that our bodies can do the work that it needs to do to keep us in top form.

Sleep
“Oh sleep! It is a gentle thing,
Beloved from pole to pole!”

-Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834)

It’s morning, but do you feel like you want to go back to bed now? When we sleep well, we feel refreshed, and we can take on the day so much more enthusiastically. We all need sleep, it is a part of being alive! And we do enjoy it – the whole routine of going to bed, getting comfortable. This is a ritual we need to acknowledge and honor. We can prepare ourselves for the night’s rest, rather than falling asleep in front of the TV. Take some time to settle in, calm down, and drift off gently and peacefully. Have you ever seen a cat sleep? Cats love their sleep – they relish it, they totally give in to it.

Thought For The Day: Jan. 18, 2021 “Just Keep Trying”

Happy Monday,

The word “Peace” has a comforting sound. It relaxes the mind and soothes the spirit. However to achieve peace we must have faith and perseverance. Peace doesn’t JUST happen on any level. (world peace, inner peace, family etc..) we must work at it. Everyday things happen that will test our peace and our ability to create it. Achieving peace is a worthwhile endeavor and because of this we must all work to make it happen. If we each do our part no matter how small we can make a difference. Believe that it can happen and keep trying!

Inner Journey: OPEN TO TRUST

“When I grip the wheel too tight, I find I lose control.”
— Steve Rapson

WE SEEK TO CONTROL OUR LIVES WHEN WE DO NOT TRUST, WHEN WE DO NOT LOVE. Our ego, perceiving itself to be vulnerable and insecure, uses control in an effort to protect itself.

At the root of our need to control, we find FEAR. It may be fear of the unknown. Fear of not coping. Fear of loss. Or possibly even fear of looking stupid. And as our efforts to control other people and events invariably fail, our fear increases.

Trust, on the other hand, is a quality of the soul. While control is a tool of the mind, TRUST AND FAITH ARE ASPECTS OF THE HEART. Trust comes with the deep knowing that we are spiritual beings in physical bodies. When we trust enough in life to give up our need to control, we can relax and open to the flow of energy in our lives. This brings peace of mind.

“The only real security in life lies in relishing life’sinsecurity.”
— M. Scott Peck

“Do not abandon trust when your ego thinks things should be different than they are.”

Speech
“Violence of the tongue is very real – sharper than any knife.”

-Mother Teresa, 1983

We used to hear “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me.” Well, forget about that one! Words can hurt – terribly! And it’s okay to admit it. The good news is that words can also heal. Think about how good if feels to hear “I love you.” Look at the way a person’s face lights up when you say “You look so beautiful!” The world needs to stop using words as weapons, and work more on using words as medicine.

Thought For The Day: Jan. 15, 2021 “Illusions”

Happy Friday,

We all have our fears, they frighten us, or can make us stressed and anxious. However, quite often the things we fear the most are self created. Something happens to us that maybe startled us or made us uncomfortable. Then our mind goes into overdrive, it twists it and changes it into something else, and suddenly we are afraid. It happens to everyone and there comes a time when we are finally ready to face that fear. We examine it and see through it, through the illusion. That’s when we realize that its something that we didn’t need to be afraid of in the first place or that it’s nothing to be afraid of anymore. Remember that life is full of illusions. Learn to see through them and embrace life’s adventure!

Inner Journey: A NEW LOOK AT OLD ATTITUDES

“I can change. I can live out my imagination instead of my memory. I can tie myself to my limitless potential instead of my limiting past.”
— Stephen Covey

I was eating lunch with a friend who shared that she disliked one of the vegetables on my plate and hadn’t eaten any since childhood. I suggested that sometimes our tastes change and maybe she could give it another try. She did, and to her surprise, sheenjoyed it. Her world became a little richer as she opened to new possibilities.

Is there something in your life you might be willing to give another try?

“Change. It has the power to uplift, to heal, to stimulate, surprise, open new doors, bring fresh experience and create excitement in life. Certainly it is worth the risk.”

Speech
“Speech is a mirror of the soul; as a man speaks, so is he.”

-Publius Syrus (85-43 B.D.)

I think this is really quite interesting. The words we speak come from within us. We think them, we articulate them. They come up with our breath, through our throats and over our tongues. They have an impact on us. It is important to speak truthfully, kindly, and with clarity. Are the words we use “nutritious” – or are they “toxic?” What are we feeding ourselves?

Thought For The Day: Jan. 14, 2021 “Blessed Patience”

Happy Thursday,

Today is a reminder about patience. As we move through life we help to create the things we want and need. Sometime things happen quickly and sometimes we have to wait. Waiting is hard particularly when its something we really want. The longer it takes the more impatient we become. Learn to go with the flow. Take the blessings that each day offers and add them to where they belong and don’t forget to practice patience. It really will pay off!

Inner Journey: COMMUNICATING WITHOUT WORDS

“The gesture is the thing truly expressive of the individual – as we think so will we act.”
— Martha Graham

Every movement and non-movement we make is a form of communication.

How do you communicate fear, withdrawal, avoidance, shutting down, disagreeing, and an uncaring attitude?

If you aren’t sure, others can probably tell you. Begin to pay attention to what your eyes and arms and facial expressions communicate. Our body language speaks louder than our words.

“An avoidance of true communication is tantamount to a relinquishment of my self-being; if I withdraw from it I am betraying not only the other but myself.”

Speech
“Let us say what we feel, and feel what we say; let speech harmonize with life.”

-Seneca the Younger (5? B.C. – C.E. 65)

One way that we can be true to ourselves is with our speech. Are we saying what we mean? Are we meaning what we say? When we are in harmony with our words and our actions, we are in harmony with life. It takes too much time and energy to say things just because we are “supposed to.” It has to feel right, it has to resonate within us, for it to be real.
