ThoughtCo: Profile of The Greek God Poseidon

In Greek mythology and legend, Poseidon is the god of the sea. However, his domain includes some aspects of the land as well, and in fact he is known as “earth-shaker” in many stories, because of his penchant for causing earthquakes. Poseidon was responsible, according to Greek legend, for the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, which was all but destroyed by a giant quake and tsunami.

In wellness speak, a “deck of cards” does not imply a joker, ace, or six of hearts. Tarot and oracle decks are much more popular among today’s health-centric crowds, used to relieve stress, decide on next steps, or access the divine, depending on who you’re talking to.

Daily Good: India’s Little Librarian

Poor neighborhoods in India typically have low literacy rates because residents do not have the resources necessary to educate their children. 9-year-old Muskaan Ahirwar is working to change this in her impoverished neighborhood in Bhopal. In January 2016, she opened a library outside her house to give kids free access to books and a place to read. She started with just a few books and now has several hundred from around the world. Her library gets 25 visitors a day and the kids play knowledge games and hold competitions to see who can read the most. The library has given those kids who used to wander the streets a place to go and read regularly. “Whoever has the drive to learn, they should start their own library and start learning, and study like us and get ahead in life” says Muskaan. { read more }

Natural Living Ideas: 13 Uses For Tea Tree Oil That Will Change Your Life

Not to be confused with an extract of the tea plant (Camellia sinensus), tea tree oil is distilled from the leaves of the Australian tea tree (Melalenca alternifolia.) Although it is highly toxic when ingested, thanks to its antibiotic, anti-fungal, antiseptic, expectorant and antiviral properties, tea tree oil has a surprising number of topical uses which can help cure or prevent a whole host of everyday maladies, which is why it is often referred to as a “medicine cabinet in a bottle.”

Elephant Journal: 12 Dr. Seuss Quotes to remind us of the Messiness & Magic of Life.

Like many of us, I grew up on Dr. Seuss.
My parents would frequently read aloud The Sneetches, Green Eggs and Ham, and The Lorax, among others. We would watch the animated version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” every Christmas Eve. And when I spoke at my high school graduation, I ended my speech with an excerpt from Oh, The Places You’ll Go.

Inner Journey:

REDISCOVER YOUR SENSE OF SMELL

“Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived.”
— Helen Keller

Many of us are so wrapped up in our thinking and activity that we have lost touch with our senses. Sensing brings us fully into the moment. Only when we are aware and conscious can we receive the gifts of experience our senses continually bring us.

Today, set an intention to be aware of smells. Focus on your nose and awaken to its sensitivity. As you smell more consciously, let go of your judgment of the aromas. Don’t label them good or bad; simply experience them for their individual qualities. Also note when smells revive old memories.

“When you start using senses you’ve neglected, your reward is to see the world with completely fresh eyes.”
— Barbara Sher

Language

“How did language develop? In much the same way as an economic order develops through the market – out of the voluntary interaction of individuals, in this case seeking to trade ideas or information or gossip rather than goods and services with one another.”

-Milton Friedman and Rose Friedman, 1979

Whatever language we speak, it’s our way of communicating with one another. Language is a means of translating our feelings and emotions into words so that we can be understood. When we can master a language, then we can be more clearly understood, and we can more clearly understand, too. There’s always more to learn, about words, and about each other.

Daily Tarot: The Pope

People may look to you to get some enthusiasm back into their lives. If sagging a little in spirit yourself, you can still inspire others. This can cheer you up, too, so don’t underestimate a small glimmer of joy in something that you genuinely love. No one has to agree with you. They only have to allow you to do what feels best to you – and you to them.

Elephant Journal: Is “Maitri” really about Self-Care? ~ Linda Lewis

There’s much confusion these days about the term “maitri,” a Sanskrit term meaning “loving-kindness.”
You often hear people say things like, “I just want to stay home and hibernate, stressless, and not relate. I need a little maitri in my life.”
While there’s nothing wrong with just staying home sometimes, the idea of self-care is not necessarily the Buddhist view of maitri.

EarthSky News: Summer Triangle, signpost for all seasons

Tonight, look for the Summer Triangle. It’s not summer for our northern temperate latitudes, but the three brilliant stars of the Summer Triangle – Vega, Deneb and Altair – are out for at least part of the night every night of the year. Presently, the Summer Triangle shines in the eastern predawn sky. You can often see this star formation from light-polluted areas or on a moonlit night

Patheos-Pagan: Questioning my faith

As a Thelemite use the word faith differently than most people do. I don’t mean a belief that isn’t backed by science. That kind of faith doesn’t work for me because I’m a scientific illuminist. Aleister Crowley described scientific Illuminism as “the method of science, the aim of religion”.

Inner Journey:

SEEK INSIGHTS

“The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation rather than upon mere survival.”
— Aristotle

INSIGHTS happen only when we shift to a higher, more inclusive perspective. As we grow in wisdom and experience, we become less attached to the form of reality and more aware of its spiritual side – its qualities, values and meaning. As we get to know ourselves as souls, we begin to let go of the self-consciousness of the ego. This allows us to more effectively include others and work with the whole picture.

When there is more in sight, we get more insights.

Try becoming aware of those times when you focus on differences. At those times, STOP and PAY ATTENTION and IDENTIFY SIMILARITIES INSTEAD. See how all parts fit into a bigger picture. Expand your perspectives. Find common causes, motives and needs. Go to another level of thinking and problem solving. Be open to using more imagination and creativity. Shift your thinking from “either/or” to “both/and” and be prepared for more insights.

“Insight occurs when, and to the degree that, one knows oneself.”
— Andrew Schneider

“We are not what we know. We are what we are willing to learn.”
— Council on Ideas

Character

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”

-Helen Keller, 1938

Everything that we have gone through in our lives has come to shape our character. How we assimilate these experiences into our personality determines the strength of our character. Life is not easy – and it’s not boring! Every day offers us up opportunities to learn and grow and develop into the person we aspire to be.
