Science
“Science is not to be regarded merely as a storehouse of facts to be used for material purposes, but as one of the great human endeavors to be ranked with arts and religion as the guide and expression of man’s fearless quest for truth.”

-Richard Arman Gregory (1864-1952)

Ah, science! It had a whole different meaning to me when I was in high school and had to memorize the periodic table. Now I look at science as these amazing discoveries that lead us to the truth. It’s not such a big leap from spirituality to science. We can see all of the miracles that exist under a microscope, or through a telescope. And right here we are living miracles, every moment. In the movie “What the Bleep Do We Know?” several scientists weigh in on the facts of our existence, and what is happening all around us, all the time.

The world may seem to be working overtime to baffle or confuse you, but you don’t have to take the bait. If you’re offered something that seems too perfectly tailored to your tastes or desires, it’s OK to be graciously skeptical. You can appear cautious rather than distrustful. Rosemary was well known to ancient practitioners. It was an herb known for strengthening the memory and helping the brain. Eventually, it also became associated with the fidelity of lovers, and was presented to wedding guests as a gift. In 1607, Roger Hacket said, “Speaking of the powers of rosemary, it overtoppeth all the flowers in the garden, boasting man’s rule. It helpeth the brain, strengtheneth the memorie, and is very medicinable for the head. Another property of the rosemary is, it affects the heart.”

Inner Journey:

WHAT’S OFF BALANCE?

“To do great work a man must be very idle as well as very industrious.”
— Samuel Butler

Spirit requires a balance of female and male energy, yin and yang, receptiveness and expression. Are you sensitive to intuition and inner guidance? Are you able to act on the guidance you receive? Seek to find a balance in being and doing in all areas of your life.

“The balanced energy is the birthing energy. I used to say that the birthing energy was all feminine — it’s not. You have to push and you have to be. It’s such a potent example of the dance of the feminine and masculine together, the dance that is the creative energy of life!”

Progress

“Progress has not followed a straight ascending line, but a spiral with rhythms of progress and regression, of evolution and dissolution.”

-Goethe (1749-1832)

Sometimes we need to take a few steps back in order to get a running start. We make mistakes, and as long as we learn from those mistakes, we progress, we grow. Eventually we get to a point where we can look back and see how far we’ve come. Then we can turn back around and see how far we have to go!

Coffey Talk: Free As A Bird

One of my very favorite books of all time is “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” by Richard Bach. This book was first published in 1970, and it has held up to the test of time, it is a true classic. If you’ve never experienced this beautiful story, it is a must-have for your home library. If you’ve read it before, read it again.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve read it, and gotten something more out of it each time. I have such an affinity for seagulls because of this wonderful little book! Jonathan is an example for each of us, to follow our dreams, to strive to do better, to be true to ourselves. The book includes amazing photography by Russell Munson.

While working on a talk about this book I discovered that Richard Bach recently found his original last chapter, which was never published! He has now added it to the “Complete Edition” version of the book.
