Wise Woman Herbal: Living Generously, the Wise Woman Way
by Susun S Weed

Living generously is a theme that plays loudly in many women’s lives. As women, our social conditioning — and often the impulse of our hearts — is to live generously by giving generously. And we give the one thing we have assured access to: ourselves.

ThoughtCo:  Celebrating the Sacred Masculine

While many Pagan paths identify themselves as “goddess traditions,” there are just as many which honor the sacred masculine alongside the divine feminine. Rather than being goddess-centric, a tradition honoring the sacred masculine will put the god on an equal playing field with the goddess rather than identifying him as simply the divine consort.

Daily Good: The Understory: Life Beneath the Forest Floor

“The first time I heard anyone speak of the “wood wide web,” more than a decade ago now, I was trying not to cry. A beloved friend was dying too young and too quickly. I had gone to see him for what I took to be the last time. He was tired by pain and drugs. We sat together, talked. My friend was a woodsman. Trees grew through his life and thought. His grandfather’s surname was Wood, he lived in a timber-framed house that he had built himself, and he had planted thousands of trees by hand over the years. “I have sap in my veins,” he wrote once.” Excerpted from his recently published book, Underland: A Deep Time Journey, “The Understory” is an examination of the life beneath the forest floor. Encountering the depth and complexity of communication that happens underground, Robert Macfarlane returns to the entangled mutualism at the root of language. { read more }

EarthSky News: Full Hunter’s Moon from dusk till dawn

These next several evenings – October 12, 13 and 14, 2019 – the moon will probably look plenty full to the eye. But, to astronomers, the full moon happens at a well defined instant – when the moon is 180 degrees opposite the sun in ecliptic longitude. That moment occurs on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at 21:08 Universal Time (UTC).

Inner Journey:

WHAT’S ON YOUR HOT LIST?

“The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want.”
— Ben Stein

A Hot List is basically a to-do list with one key difference: it only includes topics or tasks that really matter to you, those that genuinely affect your quality of life. You know — the ones you never get around to! The ones that will make your life your own!

Keep a prioritized Hot List handy to remind you to claim 5 to 15 minutes to focus on and write about what counts in your life. Even 5 minutes is better than nothing. Start small and the momentum will build.

“You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage — pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically — to say ‘no’ to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger ‘yes’ burning inside.”
— Stephen Covey

Persistence

“When you get in a tight place and everything goes against you till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the time and the place the tide will turn.”

-Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1847

I remember hearing an interview that Jay Leno did once. He was asked what he attributed his success to, and he didn’t even have to think about the answer for a second. “I didn’t go away!” he said. He explained that there were many comedians who he felt were as good, or better than he was, and they all worked the same clubs, the same circuits, so they got to be friendly. But he said the difference between him and these other guys was that he never gave up. Many of the other guys got worn out, or burnt out, or just plain tired and quit. But Jay loved what he was doing so much that he couldn’t quit. He kept going after his dream, even through some pretty bleak times. And now look at him! He could quit anytime he wanted to, because he has so much success that he doesn’t need the money. But he keeps going, because he loves it. And that makes all the difference.

Coffey Talk: Free As A Bird

One of my very favorite books of all time is “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” by Richard Bach. This book was first published in 1970, and it has held up to the test of time, it is a true classic. If you’ve never experienced this beautiful story, it is a must-have for your home library. If you’ve read it before, read it again.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve read it, and gotten something more out of it each time. I have such an affinity for seagulls because of this wonderful little book! Jonathan is an example for each of us, to follow our dreams, to strive to do better, to be true to ourselves. The book includes amazing photography by Russell Munson.

While working on a talk about this book I discovered that Richard Bach recently found his original last chapter, which was never published! He has now added it to the “Complete Edition” version of the book.

You know, that veil through which the physical senses must explore your chiseled secrets.

Effort

“You can’t always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes,
You just might find
You get what you need.”

-Mick Jagger and Keith Richards song, 1969

It usually takes something to motivate us to make that effort. It’s like we begin with the end in mind – that’s our goal, what we are working towards. But along the way, things might change. We certainly change and grow from the experience – and maybe that’s just what we really need. We can find some of the most amazing spiritual messages in our own music. Are we listening?

During this week, I had a moment when I was drenched in gratitude for no other reason that being a witch. It didn’t happen in ritual or at a sacred site but in the kitchen. I think I was slicing green beans at the time.

Inner Journey:

THE POWER OF ACCEPTANCE

“It is permissible to take life’s blessings with both hands provided thou dost know thyself prepared in the opposite event to take them just as gladly. This applies to food and friends and kindred, to anything God gives and takes away… As long as God is satisfied do thou rest content. If he is pleased to want something else of thee, still rest content.”
— Meister Eckhart

Our life begins to change in magical ways when we open to the experience of life AS IT IS. With acceptance, we stop fighting what is happening. And this creates space, an opening for new relationships to unfold.

Explore unconditionally saying yes to the facts of life. Accept your past and where you are now. Unconditional acceptance is unconditional love and this is healing.

“Sometimes what seems like surrender isn’t surrender at all. It’s about what’s going on in our hearts. About seeing clearly the way life is and accepting it and being true to it, whatever the pain, because the pain of not being true to it is far, far greater.”
— Nicholas Evans

Nature

“Nature is an endless combination and repetition of a very few laws. She hums the old well-known air through innumerable variations.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Interesting that Emerson calls Nature “she.” Maybe because we think of Mother Nature. The idea, though, is that nature is something we can count on. As unpredictable as nature can be, we do know that the sun will rise, the seasons will change, that rivers will flow to the sea. There are these laws in effect that go beyond our powers of human manipulation. Nature is much bigger than we are, and yet, at the same time, it is an essential part of who we are. The same laws that govern nature affect us as well.
