Although not truly an herb, but a wood, sandalwood is an item found often in modern Pagan rituals. In fact, “sandalwood” is an entire class of wood, found in trees that are part of the flowering Santalum family. These aromatic and dense plants are packed full of essential oils, which are often extracted for use in a variety of religious rituals, aromatherapy, and even in medicine.

Some may say it’s a wonder that science is finally catching up to what mystics and ancient prophecies have spoken into for millennia—proving that we can heal our bodies by aligning our minds, activate dormant DNA, empathically sense energy in other living beings, and affect the collective whole with our individual intentions and actions for starters.

Today’s Deity: Corn Gods & Goddesses

First grown in Mexico about 5,000 years ago, corn soon became the most important food crop in Central and North America. Throughout the region, Native Americans, Maya, Aztecs, and other Indians worshiped corn gods and developed a variety of myths about the origin, planting, growing, and harvesting of corn (also known as maize).

Corn Gods and Goddesses. The majority of corn deities are female and associated with fertility. They include the Cherokee goddess Selu; Yellow Woman and the Corn Mother goddess Iyatiku of the Keresan people of the American Southwest; and Chicomecoatl, the goddess of maize who was worshiped by the Aztecs of Mexico. The Maya believed that humans had been fashioned out of corn, and they based their calendar on the planting of the cornfield

Inner Journey:

FORGIVENESS BRINGS JOY

“The greatest evil that can befall man is that he should come to think ill of himself.”
— Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Do you feel worthy of having joy? Do you feel you deserve it?

The first step to activating our inner joy is to eliminate the blocks to it. We can start by truly forgiving ourselves and all others. Forgiveness calls for a shift in our perception. It is easier to forgive ourselves and others when we really understand that each of us has always done the very best we knew to do at that time.

“If we don’t forgive ourselves for our mistakes, and others for the wounds they have inflicted upon us, we end up crippled with guilt. And the soul cannot grow under a blanket of guilt, because guilt is isolating, while growth is a gradual process of reconnection to ourselves, to other people, and to a larger whole.”

Body

“The body is wiser than its inhabitants. The body is the soul. We ignore its aches, its pains, its eruptions, because we fear the truth. The body is God’s messenger.”

-Erica Jong, Fear of Fifty, 1994

The body definitely gives us signals, but do we pay attention? We should! Look at all we can learn from the body! It tells us when we’re tired, under stress, hungry, nervous. We may try to fight it, or ignore it, thinking we know better – but there is an innate intelligence at work in our cells that we can benefit from. This “gut instinct” that we get, that’s Spirit talking right to us. Listen up!

Elephant Journal: Why I’m Celebrating Life & Friendship by the Light of May’s Full Flower Moon.

Throughout history, the naming of full moons has been an honored tradition, often signifying the connection of the moon to the seasons.
As we know, April showers bring May flowers, so it is no wonder that the May full moon is aptly called a “Full Flower Moon.” The Full Flower Moon was seen as a symbol of increased fertility signifying to the ancient tribes that now was a safe time to bear children and plant crops as the weather was warming.

Sun phases for magic
Just like the moon, the sun has phases which can be used to tie in with your magical workings to add an extra boost of power. I also think that point between night and day and vice versa, that moment of hand over is quite special.

Inner Journey:

THE FIRST STEP TO FORGIVENESS

“To get to forgiveness, we first have to work through the painful experiences that require it.”
— Christiane Northrup

To forgive, we do not have to say that whatever happened was okay. In fact, before we can forgive, we need to allow ourselves to really feel the pain of the experience. If we don’t fully acknowledge our hurts, we will continue to carry them subconsciously and they will drain our energy.

To forgive, we need to decide that we won’t allow the memories of the event to poison us any longer. We’re ready to heal this wound from the past and open to a fresh new beginning.

The blessing is that when we’re really ready to experience our pain and we open to it, it usually fades away. By honouring our pain, we release it.

“We must let ourselves feel all the painful destruction we want to forgive rather than swallow it in denial. If we do not face it, we cannot choose to forgive it.”
— Kenneth McNoll

Of course, we can set such intentions at any time. However, working with the energies of the moon can help to super-charge those intentions

Inner Journey:

PRACTICE DETACHMENT

As our consciousness rises, our perspective becomes more and more impersonal. What does this mean?

It means we are increasingly able to view our lives and the rest of the world with detachment. This does not mean we are cold and uncaring. Rather, we are self- contained. We have well-defined boundaries and we are able to think and act objectively, clearly and responsibly.

When we have learned detachment, we do not get hooked into the thoughts and feelings of others. We are not easily upset or manipulated. We may feel compassion for others but this does not cloud our ability to choose how we think, feel and behave. We also do not need others to behave in any particular way.

“Until we take how we see ourselves (and how we see others) into account, we will be unable to understand how others see and feel about themselves and their world. Unaware, we will project our intentions on their behavior and call ourselves objective.”
— Stephen Covey

Lore for April

April, the fourth month of the current Gregorian calendar and the second month of Spring’s rule, derives its name from Aprillis, the Latin name for the ancient Roman love goddess Aphrodite. Other reference sources give aperite, the Latin word meaning “to open,” as the origination of the month’s name.
The traditional birthstone amulet of April is the diamond, and the daisy and the sweet pea are the month’s traditional flowers.

April is shared by the astrological signs of Aries the Ram and Taurus the Bull, and is sacred to the following Pagan deities:
Aphrodite, Artemis, Astarte, Erzulie, Terra, Venus, and Ying-Hua.

Moving into such total acceptance does not mean that we stop growing. When we can accept who we are now, we open the doors to our own inspiration to do and be even more!

Transformation

“The sacred call is transformative. It is an invitation to our souls, a mysterious voice reverberating within, a tug on our hearts that can neither be ignored nor denied. It contains, by definition, the purest message and promise of essential freedom. It touches us at the center of our awareness. When such a call occurs and we hear it – really hear it – our shift to higher consciousness is assured.”

-David A. Cooper, 1994

In this passage, David Cooper writes about the shofar, the ram’s horn sounded in synagogue services during the Ten Days of Penitence. But there are a lot of different ways that ‘the sacred call’ may be expressed. The fact that we are pursuing our spiritual growth, that we are allowing ourselves to be more of who we really are, shows that we have heard that call! We know that life has meaning, and we are transforming our own lives to reflect that.

Daily Good: Waiting to Unfold

Mirka Knaster, fiber and mixed media artist, asks us “How many times have artists thought, while working on a project, ‘Will I ever get this completed?’ How often do we face seemingly unsurmountable obstacles on the path to turning our vision into reality? And when will we reach the level of proficiency and excellence we aspire to?” These questions are familiar to any creative person who has a vision and wants to bring it to life. And what we often lack is patience, a slower tempo, more attentive listening to the nature of the unfolding creation.

EarthSky News: Moon sweeps past Mars January 11 to 13

On January 11, 12 and 13, 2019, use the waxing crescent moon to find the red planet Mars. You’ll find both Mars and the moon in the evening sky, with the moon in a waxing crescent phase and Mars much fainter than it was six months ago, when it outshone all the stars, brighter than since 2003. Now, Mars is still shining as brightly as a 1st-magnitude star. It’ll be that bright “star” close to the moon on these evening

Inner Journey:

HOW ARE YOU SABOTAGING YOURSELF?

“If you play it safe in life you’ve decided that you don’t want to grow any more.”
— Shirley Hufstedler

How are you sabotaging your potential for change?

We unconsciously use defence mechanisms to shield us from situations we perceive to be scary or painful. A part of you may want to grow and change, but another part may be resisting because change always moves you into new territory in your thinking and emotions.

If you find you are getting anxious, fearful, angry, frustrated, dismissive or unmotivated, then defence mechanisms are at work. Watch for them and know them to be signs of fear that wants to hold you back. Then courageously move through them.

“I have never been contained except I made the prison.”
— Mary Evans

Wisdom

“Wisdom cannot be pass’d from one having it to another not having it.

Wisdom is of the soul, is not susceptible of proof, is its own proof.”

-Walt Whitman (1819-1892)
This is another example of the more that you give, the more that you have. One of the best ways to learn is by teaching! Wisdom is not something that can necessarily be measured, but it can be felt, and it can be shared.

5 Meaningful Holiday Traditions
I once heard that kids spell love T-I-M-E. I often think of that with my own kids, but I think it’s also true for adults. What adult wouldn’t want a little more time off for the holidays? A little more time to spend relaxing by the fire. A little more time with a loved one who is no longer with us. This holiday season focus on meaningful traditions, whether that translates to time spent in peaceful solitude and reflection as you head into the new year, or time spent with friends and family. Here are five ways to create meaningful new holiday traditions

MBG: Why I Don’t Do New Year’s Resolutions & What To Do Instead

I am on my tiptoes every New Year’s Eve, caught up in the magic of something new this way coming. “Auld Lang Syne” is in my ears reminding me to honor the past that brought me here as I ask everyone around me what their favorite part of the year was and why. Daily Good: Okagesama

Okagesama is the awareness that what is inside the walls of your house or under the skin of your body or any aspect of your life and experience are elements that cannot be seen. They are in the shadows and in order to see them, we have to look very deeply. Gregg Krech writes that we have to see with more than our eyes. There are unseen forces in our lives that make them possible. When we reflect on this and try to identify all the unseen forces that make a thing or an experience possible, we discover that it is endless. We discover that what is in the shadows doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, but that once we bring the light of awareness to it, we often find that it is love.

*Whether astrology is science or magic, we’re open to most things, if they may be of benefit. ~ Ed.

Too many of us are bruised, battered, and worn from 2018’s energy.
One of the things that most of us enjoy about astrology is its ability to give us some indicators into where we go next.
Astrology is not just about what lies ahead—it’s about the past and present, too.

MNN: Why and how you should start a sit-spot routine
Spending time in nature has proven health benefits, and this habit will help you reap those positive rewards.

I’m sitting on deep green moss at the base of an old Sitka spruce. Sunlight is filtering down through a canopy of pine and alder, vine maple and salmonberry. On my right, a small creek tumbles over rocks and fine silt, wraps around the little knoll I’m on and continues down a small green ravine into a sedge-filled marsh.

Inner Journey:

WHAT’S IMPORTANT?

“Where you are headed is more important than how fast you are going. Rather than always focusing on what’s urgent, learn to focus on what is really important.”
— Stephen Covey

Time management is all about making decisions. At each step of the way, we want to choose activities that best support what we want to do with our lives. To do this, we need to be clear about our short and long-term goals.

Here’s a general question to ask yourself often: “Is this the best use of my time in terms of meeting my goals?” Sometimes, of course, we don’t have any choice. But ask yourself honestly, “Could I take more control if I really wanted to?” Often, we play the victim because we don’t want to make the effort to change our behaviour.

“Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.'”
— Lao-Tzu

Blessings

“The best things are nearest: breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of God just before you. Then do not grasp at the stars, but do life’s plain, common work as it comes, certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things of life.”

-Robert Louis Stevenson
Stevenson says “do not grasp at the stars” as if to say- don’t worry so much about things you don’t have, things that are out of your reach. Instead, focus on the task at hand, and see the beauty and the blessings which are right here, right now. We can’t appreciate what is right in front of us if we are looking off into the distance.
