EarthSky News: Cassiopeia, Queen of the north

On these December evenings, turn toward the northern sky and see its famous constellation Cassiopeia the Queen. In early December, Cassiopeia swings directly over Polaris, the North Star, at roughly 7 p.m. local clock time. Cassiopeia – sometimes called The Lady of the Chair – is famous for having the shape of a telltale W or M. Inner Journey:

CALM THE MIND

“All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone.”
— Blaise Pascal

Meditation calms our minds and makes it easier for us to pay attention to the reality around and within us. Meditation breaks through the masks that have built up as our identity. It helps us see through our defences and connect with unacknowledged and unloved aspects of ourselves. It opens us to higher mind and the voice of intuition.
We can consciously choose meditation as a way to become more aware of who we truly are. If we don’t take the initiative to open to our authentic selves, we can be certain that deep challenge and pain from life experience will push us to awaken.

“Meditation helps me feel the shape, the texture of my inner life. Here, in the quiet, I can begin to taste what Buddhists would call my true nature, what Jews call the still, small voice, what Christians call the holy spirit.”
— Wayne Muller

“In a world filled with noise, we need to quiet ourselves to hear God’s voice.”

Angels

“Angels are pure thoughts from God, winged with Truth and Love.”

-Mary Baker Eddy, 1875

There are so many different definitions for angels, that we can’t really argue “if” they exist or not – angels in some shape or form or thought have a place in this world. We have stories about them, movies and TV shows about them, they are prevalent whether they are on top of a Christmas tree or in a fresco painting. And they are always good and sweet and beautiful. What can we take from this? That there is a loving presence among us!

“The Holly King, represents the Death aspect of the God at this time of year; and the Oak King, represents the opposite aspect of Rebirth (these roles are reversed at Midsummer). This can be likened to the Divine Child’s birth. The myth of the Holly King/Oak King probably originated from the Druids to whom these two trees were highly sacred. The Oak King (God of the Waxing Year) kills the Holly King (God of the Waning Year) at Yule (the Winter Solstice). The Oak King then reigns supreme until Litha (the Summer Solstice) when the two battle again, this time with the Holly King victorious. Examples of the Holly King’s image can be seen in our modern Santa Claus.”

BRING SOUL INTO THE WORLD

“We live in a culture that is greatly biased against the imagination, because our culture is very materialistic, objective and literal. Our culture lacks soul, and doesn’t know it, although it experiences the consequences. When you don’t know what’s missing, then of course you don’t know what to bring in, even though you feel something is missing.

“We live in a world that needs more soul, more meaning. We, as conscious beings, have, as our primary responsibility, at this time in human history, the task of bringing soul into the world, or releasing soul into theworld. We do this, first of all, in ourselves and in our own personal world; then we do it in our groups – including family; then we do it in our society through our work, relationships and presence there.”

She wanted to share her friends and her secrets with other people just like her, so she began to give birth. Every month when the moon was hiding, she gave birth. For the first six months, she gave birth to daughters with dark skin and eyes. For the last six moons of the year she gave birth to fair skinned daughters. On the seventh moon of every year the First Mother gave birth to a magickal, sacred oak.

FREE TO CHOOSE

“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.”
— Sigmund Freud
In his book Nobody’s Victim, Christopher J. McCullough explains, “In order to live your freedom, you must first accept reality. ‘These are the choices, and given those choices, which do I choose?’ Whether the option you select is pleasant or painful does not alter the fact that, given reality, this is your preference.
“To live your freedom, it is helpful to stop and ask yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ and then notice whether, given the options, you are choosing what you really want, or whether you want to choose something else…. Sometimes the exercise of freedom involves naming your poison — all choices may lead to outcomes that are in some way painful. But the real pain is that of feeling powerless — denying your freedom.”
“Freedom is man’s capacity to take a hand in his own development. It is our capacity to mold ourselves.”– Dr. Rollo May

Scripture

“There is something nearer to us than Scriptures, to wit, the Word in the heart from which all Scriptures come.”

-William Penn (1644-1718)

All scriptures, no matter which religions use them, originated somewhere, and were written by someone, or by many people who were compelled to put those exact words down on paper. The remarkable thing is that they have stood the test of time. Because Truth is Truth, it doesn’t change. And what resonated in the heart way back when, still resonates in our hearts when we read the words today.

Happy Thursday,

Laughter clears the mind and eases stress and anxiety and that’s a good thing! Today’s thought is a reminder not to take life so seriously. Work with what you can and don’t struggle with what you can’t and always look for the humor in every situation. TRANSFORMATION

“The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”
— William Faulkner

Longing for a miracle that will transform your life? Miracles happen, and if we don’t want that magic to disappear on us, we need to learn from each epiphany — to integrate it, apply it, and build on it so we can permanently shift to a new level of being.

The real key to fulfillment lies in ONGOING transformation: building our awareness of daily opportunities to change our perceptions and raise our consciousness. Life is about dissolving the old and creating anew. The more we open to accepting and learning from every life experience, the more our lives transform.

Thought For The Day: Dec. 18, 2019 “Growing Hope”

Happy Wednesday,

Hope. The dictionary says that “Hope is  a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.” We all have hopes and dreams that we hold in our hearts. They make us happy and help us to move forward. However, when we lose hope it shrivels the soul and can bring sadness and even depression. If this is you today try looking for that “ONE GOOD THING” (there is always one and sometimes more!). It may be a small thing but its there and the seeds of hope can be found within it. Take this tiny seed, hold it close and give it light. Tomorrow look for another and the day after yet another. Plant them together and create a garden filled with new hopes and dreams. You can do it!

“Musical training doesn’t just improve your ear for music — it also helps your ear for speech. That’s the takeaway from an unusual new study published in The Journal of Neuroscience. MNN: Why dark sky tourism is catching on

In the fight to protect natural wonders around the world from pollution, development and other man-made byproducts of our modern world, it’s an overlooked fact that we’re on the verge of losing one of our most enchanting. Even more ironic, it’s not something that requires travel or tickets to experience. The night sky — a free, all-access glowing spectacle — has been tamed by humanity to the point where 83% of the world’s population now live under light polluted skies.

Inner Journey:

DISTINGUISH PERSONALITY DESIRES FROM SOUL NEEDS

“Human history is the sad result of each one looking out for himself.”
— Julio Cortazar

We indulge ourselves when we seek to meet our longings through desires of the personality. We indulge ourselves when we buy more clothes to make us happy, when we eat another snack to ease the hunger, when we have an affair to feel powerful or loveable. Any pleasure we get, if we get any at all, is shallow and short-lived.
The only lasting satisfaction can come from meeting the deep spiritual needs of the soul. We discover what we are really after in life when we identify the spiritual qualities and needs that lie behind our desires for material pleasures.

“But life lived only for oneself does not truly satisfy men or women. There is a hunger in Americans today for larger purposes beyond the self.”
— Betty Friedan

“I had assumed that the Earth, the spirit of the Earth, noticed exceptions – those who wantonly damage it and those who do not. But the Earth is wise. It has given itself into the keeping of all, and all are therefore accountable.”
-Alice Walker, 1988

That really is the way it works, isn’t it? The Earth can’t differentiate one person from another, because we’re all one! So, what one of us does affects all of us. We’re all in this together; we can’t afford to be selfish. We have to keep the “big picture” in mind at all times.

Thought For The Day: Dec. 17, 2019 “Universal Language”

Happy Tuesday,

How do you face the world? Do you greet it with a smile or is your “resting bitch face” always in place”? This phrase has become the expression de jour in the last several years and is actually a mild form of rudeness that has become “acceptable.” A smile is a gift that takes mere seconds to share with someone. Smiles make you feel good and can release happy endorphins in your brain. A smile makes others feel good too. Share this free gift with those around you and change someone’s day.

MBG: 3 Holiday Season Intentions For Getting To January In One Stress-Free Piece

Some say—well, at least a very popular song suggests—that the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. No matter what your holiday situation is, that’s a lot of pressure for anyone. Daily Good: The Lost Words

“It had come to our attention that words were slipping out from the mouths and the minds of children, but it was only once the book was complete and beginning to make its way out into the world that this really hit home. In a class full of children I asked who knew what a wren was. Wren, that small brown bird, feathers small as splinters with a sharp song so loud that threads its way through hedges in parks and gardens. Not one. Not even the teacher. An absence of knowledge.” Award-winning writer and illustrator Jackie Morris shares more.{ read more }

LAUGH!

“We don’t laugh because we’re happy, we’re happy because we laugh.”
— William James

Why laugh?

Laughter nourishes the soul and triggers joy. It’s a natural stress reliever. It stimulates the immune system and increases oxygen, stamina and our breathing capacity. Medical literature is full of reasons to laugh for the health of it.

Don’t rely upon your funny friends, favorite sit-com or jokes to tickle your funny bone — just laugh for the joy of it!

“Laughter is like the human body wagging its tail.”
— Anne Wilson Schaef

“There is a unity of the body with the environment, as well as a unity of the body and soul into one person.”
-Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947)

When my kids were little they watched “The Lion King” on video over and over again. They loved the animals, they could relate to them – and they totally “got” the whole Circle of Life message. I think this new generation is more sensitive about the environment, maybe because they grew up with more of an awareness of it. There are recycling bins in every home now, so kids are getting into better habits at a younger age.

Daily Tarot: The Moon

It’s possible that you’re putting yourself under more stress and pressure than anyone or anything else going on around you. It’s not necessary to beat yourself up emotionally like this. Things are fine and you can make things even better if you curtail the urge to obsessively dwell on only what and who is letting you down. Be your own best friend and give yourself credit for what you’re doing right.
