Thought For The Day: Feb. 4 2019 “Let Go”

Happy Monday,

We spend a lot of time engaging in things that cause us stress. We find peace in acknowledging what we can control and what we can’t. Wisdom is found when we stop struggling with everything and just let go. Take time today and free up some of your energy by letting go of “just one thing” that you have been struggling with. Now you can devote that energy to something better. A relationship, a project you have been putting off or even a little self care. What will you let go of today?

Daily Good: The Universe as an Infinite Storm of Beauty

Taking a walk in a quiet woods, gazing up into the night sky, or even walking in a crowd in a large city somewhere in the world, we may find ourselves having transcendent moments along with John Muir. These moments awaken us to our place within the universe at the same time that they disorient us as we realize how small we are. In this piece, writer Maria Popova helps us to see through John Muir’s eyes that our smallness is what connects us so universally to everything else that is. In being humbled, no longer do we get lost in the illusion that humans dominate creation. With Muir as our guide, we can realize that we are joined to everything else in creation.

Few things are worse than an annoying tickle in the back of the throat, or a relentless, hacking cough that seems to hang on forever. Conventional cough syrups can help with symptoms, but they are usually laden with alcohol and other ingredients that cause drowsiness or are otherwise unsuitable for some people, including children. Fortunately, there are several few herbal allies that are effective at reducing congestion and cough we can turn to.

These days there seems to be growing divide between magickal practitioners who claim the truth of witchery compared to those who embrace a lighter form of the craft. FEELING TRAPPED? SLOW DOWN!

“If you’re having difficulty coming up with new ideas, then slow down. For me, slowing down has been a tremendous source of creativity. It has allowed me to open up — to know that there’s life under the earth and that I have to let it come through me in a new way. Creativity exists in the present moment. You can’t find it anywhere else.”
— Natalie Goldberg

Feeling trapped in some way? Give yourself space. Space to do nothing but breathe. To intentionally relax those tight muscles. To just for a few precious minutes, let it all go.

The world will keep turning if you tune out for a short while. And your world will begin to recover its balance.

“It’s important to be heroic, ambitious, productive, efficient, creative, and progressive, but these qualities don’t necessarily nurture soul. The soul has different concerns, of equal value: downtime for reflection, conversation, and reverie; beauty that is captivating and pleasuring; relatedness to the environs and to people; and any animal’s rhythm of rest and activity.”

Thought For The Day: Feb. 1 2019 “Be Still”

Happy Friday,

We end the week and start the new month with a reminder. In order to embrace “stillness” we must learn to go with the flow and let life unfold. This doesn’t mean that we should quit trying it just means that we should stop fighting against, or struggling with the things life hands us. When we struggle we tend to lose sight of what we want. However by letting things unfold naturally and making adjustments where needed our path is smoother. Find stillness today, be radiant and don’t miss out on what life is offering.

A Note from the Universe

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you…

You get as many “do-overs” as you like. Of course, you never know you’re living a “do-over” until it’s over.

There are lots of reasons for wanting a “do-over.” Most of all, people want another chance to do things they were afraid to do the first time, and to say things they were afraid to say. Oddly enough, it’s not their mistakes they want to rework, but their “unused” minutes.

Yeah, pretty nifty, but you should know that it isn’t any easier the next time, and because no two ever go exactly the same, the gifts, opportunities, and loves of one never appear the same way again.
So all in all, it’s better to live as if there are no “do-overs,” so that you won’t need one. But I thought I’d share this with you anyway to work in the bits about fear, mistakes, and how precious today’s opportunities really and truly are.

Crafty as a fox,

The Universe

Commitment

“I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart.”

-Vincent van Gogh
Are we committed to living life to its fullest? What does that mean to each one of us personally? How does that show up in our daily routines? I think what van Gogh was saying was that commitment has to be whole-hearted. Whatever it is, whether it’s a friendship, a career, a marriage, or our spiritual pursuits – if we’re in it with all our heart, then we’re demonstrating the importance that it has in our lives. And whatever it is, will grow and bloom and thrive with our commitment to it.

Thought For The Day: Jan. 31, 2019 “Just Ask”

Happy Thursday,

Asking for help can be difficult. We like to think that we can do or take care of everything by ourselves. Sometimes this work out and other times we discover that we can’t do it alone. Admitting that we need help is hard and asking for it can be even harder. Remember that asking for help doesn’t mean you have failed, it makes you smart. A smart person realizes that they are not alone, they put pride and ego aside so that a problem can be solved. Never be ashamed to ask someone for help, be a smart person and ask for what you need.

Garden Digest:

“Candlemas’ is the Christianized name for the holiday, of course. The older Pagan names were Imbolc and Oimelc. ‘Imbolc’ means, literally, ‘in the belly’ (of the Mother). For in the womb of Mother Earth, hidden from our mundane sight but sensed by a keener vision, there are stirrings. The seed that was planted in her womb at the solstice is quickening and the new year grows. ‘Oimelc’ means ‘milk of ewes’, for it is also lambing season. The holiday is also called ‘Brigit’s Day’, in honor of the great Irish Goddess Brigit. At her shrine, the ancient Irish capitol of Kildare, a group of 19 priestesses (no men allowed) kept a perpetual flame burning in her honor. She was considered a goddess of fire, patroness of smithcraft, poetry and healing (especially the healing touch of
midwifery).”

TIME TO CHANGE?

“When coasting in our comfort zones, we don’t grow. We continue to do more of the same…. Maintaining a comfort zone can, paradoxically, lead to discomfort in the long run. If by being comfortable we avoid important life issues, internal tension accumulates…. Eventually, as both internal and external pressures for change persist, the ‘comfort zone’ ceases to serve us.”
— Eric Allenbaugh

It takes effort to change. What do you most want to change in your life? Make a list of what you can do to start the process. Try journaling, perhaps. Read books. Take a course. Find a mentor. Seek out support.

How will you commit time to make it happen? When are you going to start? Your life is passing quickly!

Thought For The Day: Jan. 30 2019 “Patience”

Happy Wednesday,

Patience, some of us have it, and some of us don’t. The ultimate example of patience can be found in nature. Things happen in their own time and at a steady pace whereas humans like to hurry and force things to happen. If we hurry and push to make things happen we often find that the results are not quite what we had hoped for. But if we adopt natures pace, get the ball rolling and allow things to unfold and happen then the actualization of our dreams will become what we intended them to be.

Inner Journey:

WORK WITH TENSION

“You never will be the person you can be if pressure, tension and discipline are taken out of your life.”
— James G. Bilkey

We need tension in our lives. It’s the force of personal evolution — it sparks creativity and higher consciousness. If we’re not comfortable with a situation, we try to improve it, right?

Tension arises through our experience of opposites. These opposites fight each other as each one struggles for dominance. Tension is transformed when two opposite dimensions of reality are brought together in balance and in wholeness.

Know that tension is an integral part of growth. Instead of avoiding or resisting tension when it arises, identify the opposing forces at play. Make space for each of them to be there together and the tension will transform.

We encounter tensions between positives and negatives, mind and body, self and environment, self and others, and personality and soul – the dualities in our lives.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
— Neale Donald Walsch

Today’s Recipe: Herbed Chicken Rolls in Cherry Sauce

Here comes a winner-winner chicken dinner from my personal cookbook. This chicken breast is rolled up with herbed garlic butter, then cooked in a tart cherry sauce. It’s a beautiful meal for these colder evenings… and I think quite pleasant visually! Enjoy

Commitment

One’s lifework, I have learned, grows with the working and the living. Do it as if your life depended on it, and the first thing you know, you’ll have made a life out of it. A good life, too.”

-Theresa Helburn
Lifework. Isn’t all of life work at times?! Commitment does take work, but because we get so much out of what we put into it, it becomes a pleasure. Our relationships need attention, and the ones that get it help us to grow. Our lives are built on our commitments – to ourselves, our relationships, our work, and our communities.

Thought For The Day: Jan. 29, 2019 “Forces of Natural Healing”

Happy Tuesday,

Hippocrates was an ancient Greek physician often refereed to as the “Father of Medicine”. Ahead of his time, Hippocrates understood that true healing began within. While we each have the ability to heal it’s important to remember that sometimes we must hit rock bottom before we realize our own ability. Anxiety, stress, and sadness are just a few things that we can make better for ourselves if we have faith and courage to look within to find the triggers of these emotions. You are in charge of your own peace and happiness. Be willing to help yourself and don’t expect others to do it for you.

Thought. Co: Recipes for the Imbolc Sabbat

Imbolc is a great time of fire and feasting. It’s the celebration of the goddess Brighid, guardian of the hearth and homefires, as well as the season of the Lupercalia, and of the spring lambing season. For this sabbat, celebrate with foods that honor the hearth and home —breads, grains, and vegetables stored from fall, such as onions and potatoes—as well as dairy items.

Daily Good: On Compassion, Equanimity and Impermanence

“Compassion is practiced in two ways: subtly and overtly. You can subtly serve any person with whom you interact by allowing their pain to resonate deeply within you, and experiencing it completely so that it does not turn into suffering within you. This is the healthy alternative to both callous indifference and enervating enmeshment.” Author and mindfulness teacher Shinzen Young shares more in this collection of thought-provoking reflections

MNN: How to learn bird language in 5 steps

Birds love to tell tales and chatter about what’s going on around them at all times. They are vigilant and vocal beings, and naturalists know that by listening in, you can discover what everyone is up to — even when the “who” is completely out of sight

EarthSky News: Orion the Hunter is easy to spot

Tonight – or any winter evening – look for the constellation Orion the Hunter. It’s probably the easiest to pick out of all the constellations in the Northern Hemisphere winter sky (Southern Hemisphere summer sky). It’s identifiable by Orion’s Belt, three medium-bright stars in a short, straight row at the mid-section of the Hunter. See these stars? They are easy to spot on the sky’s dome.

Patheos-Pagan: Love is in the Air or is it?

“Love is in the air, everywhere I look around, Love is in the air, every sight and every sound…” As February draws near, this delightful song (Love is in the air by John Paul Young) seems to play over and over in my head. It’s an upbeat melody that lifts spirits and invites sing-a-longs.

Inner Journey:

THE KEY TO CREATIVITY

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge islimited. Imagination encircles the world.”
— Albert Einstein

Do you know the key to creativity?

It rhymes with weed. It produces the oak tree. We often eat it or grind it up for flour. It can mean cause or origination. You guessed it. It is SEED.

Our minds love to associate one thing to another. But as we get stuck in very fixed patterns of thinking, we think of fewer and fewer connections. We are ruled by habits, associations and automatic responses. So we must stimulate our thinking with lots of different seeds to chart new paths in our brains.

“Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive.”
— Napoleon Hill

“Anyone can look for fashion in a boutique or history in amuseum. The creative explorer looks for history in a hardwarestore and fashion in an airport.”
— Robert Wieder

Commitment
“If you don’t make a total commitment to whatever you’re doing, then you start looking to bail out the first time the boat starts leaking. It’s tough enough getting that boat to shore with everybody rowing, let alone when a guy stand up and starts putting his life jacket on.”

-Lou Holtz
Lou Holtz is the well-known football coach, and he’s talking about teamwork, and the importance of commitment to the team. The analogy he uses is great because it’s so visual – and you can see how one person’s lack of commitment affects those around him.

I was thinking about the commitment our ancestors made when coming to this country. Can you imagine the courage it took to leave home for somewhere, something unknown – the possibility of something better? Once they set out in that “boat” there was no turning back. If we could only have that courage, that commitment, in our own lives to just “go for it!” Yes, there are risks – that comes with the territory, but like another saying goes: “no risks, no rewards!”
