Elephant Journal: This is Self-Love. This is Self-Care. This is being your own Best Friend.

So often in my life I have heard people say, “We all need to love ourselves,” or “You don’t love yourself enough.”
My first reaction to this used to be, “What the bleep are they talking about?”
A couple of times I even sat down and tried it. I sat in a quiet place and thought, “Okay, love yourself.” Nothing happened. I concluded that loving yourself was some kind of woo-woo nonsense.

Beginnings & Endings

“‘Begin at the beginning.’ the King said, gravely, ‘and go till you come to the end; then stop.'”

-Lewis Carroll (1832 – 1898) Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, 1865

Just where is this “beginning?” It’s an arbitrary thing. There is no real beginning, and there is no real end. Remember when it was New Year’s 2000 and the big argument was whether the New Millennium started on January 1, 2000 or January 1, 2001? And there was this huge concern about Y2K? It all seems so silly now. Each day is another day. We can choose when our beginnings are. We can begin right here, right now, right where we are. Or we can wait until tomorrow! It’s our choice, not the calendar’s o

ThoughtCo: Magical Oils 101

Our ancestors used oils in ceremony and ritual hundreds and even thousands of years ago. Because many essential oils are still available, we can continue making our own blends today. Many companies today offer synthetic oils at a fraction of the cost of essential oils (essential oils are the ones actually extracted from a plant).

Inner Journey:

SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY

“Adopt the pace of nature, her secret is patience.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Racing through life is very stressful. If we stay in high gear too long, we lose our ability to shift down. And when we’re stressed, we can’t access happiness, appreciation, fun, compassion, generosity, awareness of beauty and other wonderful qualities. High stress also triggers negative emotions like frustration, impatience, anger and fear.

Life has so much to offer if we will slow down and truly experience it. We must always remember that we are the ones in control of the accelerator. We CAN choose to brake.

“Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going too fast — you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.”

A Note from the Universe

If you can get that there was once a “time” before “space,”  when all that existed was “Divine Intelligence…”

Then you can also get that there could never, later, be anything that wasn’t “Divine Intelligence.” Because what would it be made of? Where would it have come from?

Then you’d get that you must therefore be pure “Divine Intelligence” yourself and that there’s only one explanation for you being you, here and now:

From the pinnacle of your royal magnificence, the zenith of your heavenly godhood, as pure “Divine Intelligence,” you, exactly as you now are, with every freckle and blemish, are exactly who you, God, most wanted to be. And you knew exactly what you were doing.

Heart

“We distrust our heart too much, and our head not enough.”

-Joseph Roux (1834-1886)

We say: Listen to your heart. Follow your heart. But do we take our own advice, or do we overthink and rationalize? Where does intuition come from? We feel it in our gut or know it in our hearts. Too often we ignore it, thinking that we know better, that logic says something different. Our heads can argue, we can debate an issue with ourselves and end up more confused than ever. But our heart doesn’t waver. It offers a clear direction. When we take the time to tune in, its message is simple.

Vegetarianism

“It is nearly 50 years since I was assured by a conclave of doctors that if I did not eat meat, I should die of starvation.”

-George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)

This discussion came about by the suggestion of one of our subscribers, and I think there is a lot to say about it. Now before all our meat-eating readers take offense, rest assured that I am not trying to convert anyone! I believe that diet is a choice. I have made the choice to be vegan – that’s the vegetarian without eggs or dairy. It can be challenging at times, particularly when dining at restaurants that do not provide such an enlightened menu – but I have found the benefits, both in terms of health and spiritual growth, to far outweigh the inconveniences.

WHAT ARE YOU FEELING?

“We know too much and feel too little. At least, we feel too little of those creative emotions from which a good life springs.”
— Bertrand Russell

Many of the qualities that bring fulfilment in life are feelings, like love, joy, freedom and gratitude.

In our overly rational world, we tend to think about how we feel, which, of course, is not feeling at all — it’s thinking.

Honour your feelings and be willing to experience them. They give us valuable feedback about what is and what is not working in our lives. They are the signposts to meaningful inner work.

“With just a little education and practice on how to manage your emotions, you can move into a new experience of life so rewarding that you will be motivated to keep on managing your emotional nature in order to sustainit. The payoff is delicious in terms of improved quality of life.”

On June 23, 2019, Mercury reaches a milestone the evening sky, as this world swings out to its greatest elongation of 25 degrees east of the setting sun. Mercury, the innermost planet of the solar system, is often lost in the sun’s glare. Yet practiced sky watchers know the best chance of catching Mercury after sunset is generally around the time of Mercury’s greatest eastern elongation. Patheos-Pagan: Get Thee to a Forest

Recently, to begin celebrating Litha a bit early, I went to the forest for a much needed break from day-to-day stresses and life. I know I am fortunate to live in Western North Carolina, where the land itself feels magical, but forests have always had a special meaning in my life.

Inner Journey:

WHAT IF… ?

“The universe is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”
— Eden Phillpotts

What if you were to pretend that you were healthy, wealthy and wise? What if you were to decide to be happy, no matter what else was happening?

Take the power of ‘what if…’ seriously, and you will grasp the power to create a world of your own design. Everything, EVERYTHING begins in the imagination. Put it to work constructively for you.

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes.”
— William James

“Sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

A Note from the Universe

No more “supposed to’s,” OK?

You’re not supposed to work harder, look better, sleep less, sell more, run faster, talk slower, be happier, stay longer, leave earlier, cook, clean, negotiate, settle, start, stop, move, try, win, shake, rattle or roll.

Other people made all that up.

I love you the way you are,

Colors

“Green is the fresh emblem of well-founded hopes. In blue the spirit can wander, but in green it can rest.”

-Mary Webb, The Spring of Joy, 1917

We live in this colorful world and I think we sometimes take that for granted. So let’s put our attention on colors just a little bit and see what we can learn from their presence in our lives. Green brings to mind growth – all the green grass, green moss, it is cool and restful. Green also represents growth in terms of money, financial growth. But then we also say that we can be “green with envy” and that’s not such a good thing! There’s also the gardener who has a “green thumb” – and I remember Mr. Green Jeans on Captain Kangaroo! What comes to mind when you think of green? Emeralds, Ireland… let your imagination wander a little!

ThoughtCo: Litha Prayers

Midsummer is the time when we celebrate the bounty of the earth and the power of the sun. Our fields are flourishing, fruits are blossoming on the trees, herb bushes are fragrant and full of life. The sun is at its highest point in the sky, and it has bathed the earth in its warmth, heating up the soil so that when autumn rolls around, we’ll have a rich and bountiful harvest. These prayers celebrate the different aspects of midsummer. Feel free to modify them to suit the needs of your tradition.

APPRECIATION

“You can never get to peace and inner security without first acknowledging all of the good things in your life. If you’re forever wanting and longing for more without first appreciating things the way they are, you’llstay in discord.”
— Doc Childre and Howard Martin

Develop an attitude of gratitude. We discover a sense of wholeness as we appreciate both the small and big things in our lives. And it really helps to remember to appreciate ourselves. Appreciation is more than just acceptance — it’s respect and admiration.Let go of criticism and self-abuse.

“Generally, appreciation means some blend of thankfulness, admiration, approval, and gratitude. In the financial world, something that ‘appreciates’ grows in value. With the power tool of appreciation, you get the benefitof both perspectives: as you learn to be consistently thankful and approving, your life will grow in value.”

Comfort

“One sits uncomfortably on a too comfortable cushion.”

-Lillian Hellman, 1976

What I get from this is that there is such a thing as “too comfortable” and that’s not necessarily a good thing. We need a certain amount of change, and renewal in our lives to keep things moving, to keep things active. Life spurs us on – and one way it does that is by making us uncomfortable sometimes. We feel the need to seek comfort, and that causes us to grow.

ThoughtCo: Mortar and Pestle

The mortar and pestle set is a handy tool that many Pagans – and other folks – use for grinding and blending herbs and dried ingredients together during a magical working. The set consists of two pieces – the mortar, which is typically a bowl, although it can be flat as well, and the pestle, which is held in the hand. The wide end of the pestle, which is shaped a bit like a baseball bat, is often roughened to aid in the grinding and crushing of herbs, resins, or whatever else you may be working with

Spirituality & Health: The Empty Mind: Let Go of This Meditation Myth
Many people get deterred from meditation because they feel like their minds are racing. Letting go of the idea of a totally empty brain can help. Here are three tips to try this week>

Listen to your thoughts. Be aware, as thoughts come to you, that the mind is thinking—but you don’t need to get involved in the content. Spiritual teacher Ram Dass shares his insights on How to Cultivate Mindfulness by Listening to Your Thoughts.

Embrace the “full mind.” According to Buddhist teacher and author Bodhipaksa, who runs the site Wildmind, “When meditation brings us to the point where self-talk ceases, the mind is anything but blank.” As we become more practiced at meditation, self-talk slows but we also gain an awareness of the sensations, emotions, and mental imagery that pass through, so expecting a blank slate isn’t the goal.

Treat the mind as a friend. Contributing writer Julie Peters writes that she wouldn’t sit down with a close friend, “staring her down and shushing her every time she tried to say something. … The difficulty of listening, whether to our real live best friends or to our own selves, is learning not to interject with judgment or advice before the other has finished talking.” She recommends meditating while focusing on the breath in order to stay present with how you feel in your body as the thoughts scurry about. For more, read her piece, On Meditating Badly.
