Latkes (potato pancakes) are a must-have at Hanukkah, but are really wonderful any time of the year! This is my mother’s recipe, which is honestly the best potato latke I’ve had. In most modern Pagan traditions, plants and their folklore are an integral part of belief and practice. In particular, many of the Sabbats are associated with the magical properties of different plants. Yule, the winter solstice, falls around December 20 – 22 in the northern hemisphere, and near June 20 – 22 if you live below the equator. Let’s take a look at Yule, and seven plants that often correspond with the season.

“At solstice, the woods were bright in a snowy way, the sky pearl gray above the stately maples and gnarled burr oaks. An Alaskan marooned in the urban Midwest, it took me years to find this nearby patch of relatively undisturbed land where I can sense the power of wildness. Now I go there often, watching the seasons unfold their changeful unchanging patterns in the increasingly familiar forest.

I especially like to walk among the sleeping trees in the half-lit silence of winter dawns. The trail I follow winds and twists, new patches of mixed woodland appearing at every turn. That morning, I reached a point where the path turns sharply left to follow a small ravine. In spring, ephemeral ponds—lively with salamanders, loud with frogs—form in the creases of the forest there. But in frozen winter, I expected nothing beyond silence and wind.

So I did not see them at first, three deer beside three empty larches. When I made them out—gray-dun hides against a gray-dun world—they were motionless, white tails aloft like flags of distress. I stopped in my tracks, thinking how lucky I was to meet the animal my Celtic forebears called the spirit of wildness on that auspicious day.”

So today we are being reminded that the more we focus on what’s good in our lives the happier we are and will be.This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t want something better or try to make things better for ourselves, it just means that we should step back and breathe. Remember that by focusing on the good things and the things that we can control it creates a positive flow of energy which brings good things back to us. As we start the countdown to the new year it’s time to embrace our December Theme and release old habits, patterns and thought forms. This will help us to harness our power and make the necessary room for the blessings that are headed your way. The Universe and your spiritual helpers are here to ensure that all of your needs are met. The opportunity to create something great is here, so allow yourself to take advantage of what’s being offered.

Our power of perspective enhances our ability to be optimistic and limits negative thought forms. Which makes perspective one of our greatest assets. By making the most of these valuable skills it effectively generates new opportunities and draws good things directly to us. Today we are being reminded that we are a direct reflection of our thoughts. If we greet the world in a negative manner then that’s the energy that will surround us. However, when we embrace an optimistic outlook the Universe sends good things our way! Today, start the process of positive change and use your power to create something awesome!

This is a team effort and if we truly want to succeed we must do our part to help make things happen. This means that once you ask for assistance (and yes you need to ask) you must continue to add your energy to the request by taking advantage of opportunities as they present themselves, by releasing things we no longer need to make room and by staying focused on the desired outcome. Sometimes the fear of success or failure stops us from making the effort or moving forward. Just remember that our patience and perseverance helps us to grow and increases our power. By working as team there is nothing that cannot be accomplished

Archangel Sandalphon hears all requests and makes sure that they get to the Angel or Ascended Master who is best able to handle them. Ask him to help you clearly understand the information that you receive (his favorite mode of communication is music!). Sandalphon also provides us with an emotional boost of courage. This is important as it helps us to make bold decisions that will help us on our path.

The Ascended Master Solomon helps us to take what we are given and make the most of it. He teaches us how to do things more efficiently as he guides us through difficult situations. Focus and efficiency help us in our quest for personal evolution and help create the necessary stepping stones we need to move ahead.

The Hawaiian fire goddess Pele helps us to ignite our inner fire. This fire when channeled correctly helps to fuel our passions and sense of purpose. She is a goddess of empowerment teaches us about honest communication and how it aids our goal setting and getting. “Within you lives the sacred fire that gives life to your greatest dreams and passions. This part of you must be allowed to come forward, not smothered beneath fear, resentment or the expectations of others. Your fire will help you forge new paths!”

Apophyllite promotes a strong connection between the physical body and the information that is transmitted from the spiritual realms. It also helps to bring Universal love into the decision making process so that mind and spirit are connected.

Orange Calcite helps us to embrace our own power and the abilities we possess while eliminating self-defeating thinking. It also helps to balance the emotions and calm our fears so that we can work through problems and temporary setbacks so we may reach our full potential. It helps to dissolve problems and insecurities that can arise when we are faced with new opportunities.

Lava Stone. This simple stone is a powerful symbol of our own energy and is connected to Pele. It is a stone of rebirth and helps us to burn away unneeded layers so we can initiate new growth.
