It’s fascinating when we look at the etymology behind words. So many words really match the object they represent. When we look at the botanical names of plants, we find that the Latin root refers to the nature of the particular flower. I love reading baby name books because they lend insight into the origin of a person’s name. As we grow, our name changes and evolves with us. We may have a nick-name when we’re little, and choose something more formal when we get older. We may pick up names given to us by our friends and loved-ones. Many of us change our names when we marry. And when we have children, we take on the name “Mom” or “Dad.” I know several people who have chosen a new name for themselves to reflect who they are today. It’s our prerogative, since we know ourselves best.

Inner Journey: Be aware of duty

Many of us have been taught to do our duty. What reaction does this bring up for you?

For me, ‘doing my duty’ often means doing something I really don’t want to do. My heart’s not in it. When this is the case, tasks may get done but there’s no gift to the world. We do not truly serve if we give to others with resentment.

Perhaps we need to give ourselves permission to say no and look after our own needs. When our own needs are met, we are much more likely to want to give from a full heart.

It’s not selfish to look after ourselves — it’s essential!
