There comes a time in every life, when the valiant choice is made to take a courageous stand for oneself, in spite of consequences, against those who have behaved irresponsibly. And this is good.

Sometime afterwards, it ultimately dawns on all, however, that what they might be most concerned with are their own responsibilities. And this is trebly good.

Immortality
“Be the first to say something obvious and achieve immortality.”

-Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916)

I had to smile when I read this quote! It’s so funny because it rings true! There are universal truths in life – certain things that are said over and over again – and maybe the first person who makes the statement gets the credit for it, and the others are left to quote this person. But knowledge and wisdom is available to all of us – whether we read it in a book, or obtain it through meditation. Probably everything that needs to have been said, has been said already – but by saying it again, in a different way, time, or place, someone hears it for the first time. Truth resonates. Truth is immortal no matter who says it

LEARN TO LET GO

“To attain knowledge, add things every day. To attain wisdom, remove things every day.”
— Lao Tzu

How do we take something away? As we cultivate higher awareness, we begin to see just how much we have added things that really aren’t there to our picture of reality. Our beliefs, concepts and emotions all add layers of meaning to physical reality, butthat meaning exists for us only – it has no objective existence. For example, the word ‘mother’ has a complicated network of meaning for each of us.

Become aware of how your beliefs and emotions colour your perception of different events in your life. See if you can begin to step out of your fabrications to experience the truth and spaciousness of what is.

“When guilt rears its ugly head confront it, discuss it and let it go. The past is over. … Forgive yourself and move on.”

Inner Journey:

A NEW LOOK AT PROBLEMS

“The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem.”
— Theodore Rubin

Our lives really begin to change when we learn to shift our perspective on ‘problems.’

From a spiritual perspective, problems offer our best path to growth. Like it or not, pain gets our attention. Discomfort also challenges the ego’s perception that it is in complete control of life. This opens the door for soul’s guidance.

If we want to be rid of the problem, we need to shift from denial and resistance to accept that this situation is present. We need to be willing to truly feel our experience to allow the energy of emotions to move through.

Finally, we need to explore what belief is giving rise to our distress. When we realize the belief is faulty, our shift in perspective resolves the problem. The solution always lies within us.

“No one can go back and make a brand new start. Anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.”

“Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them.”

-Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
Whether or not we have children ourselves, we have parents. And, like it or not, our parents have had a huge influence in how we define ourselves. The relationship is a complex one, but it is essential to our growth. It is a part of God’s design. We have the parents we have for a reason. As we learn and grow we view these people in our lives, and our relationship with them, in different, more expanded, ways.

Daily Dream Meaning: Ice

1. To put ice into a drink indicates that perhaps the dreamer is spending too much time indulging in pleasures and not enough on practical matters. However, to be surrounded by ice, or to sit on it, implies comfortable living ahead that has been well earned.
2. Slipping on ice or falling through thin ice implies difficulties and obstacles ahead, while deliberately breaking through ice indicates new friendships. Remember the metaphor, “breaking the ice”?
3. Skating on ice alone indicates success ahead, but skating with a partner COULD mean that someone is sabotaging your efforts. Or it could mean a successful partnership. To judge which it is, look to other symbols in the dream.

Inner Journey: There’s Hope

“No matter how painful our early experiences were, our Essence cannot be harmed. Our Essence is waiting for the opportunity to reveal itself. In a very true sense, we are waiting for the opportunity to become ourselves. Our spirit is yearning to break free, to express itself …

“And yet, ironically, we always fear and resist opening to that which is most real in us. When we trust in the process and give ourselves over to it, however, our true nature comes forth. The result is real integrity, love, authenticity, creativity, understanding, guidance, joy, power, and serenity-all of the qualities we are forever demanding that personality supply.”

Parents
“My parents were both, in their way, very loving and indulgent. Just the fact that I had the presumption to become an artist is rather ridiculous, isn’t it, with no qualifications except that I felt treasured as a child.”

-John Updike
The power and influence that adults can have on children is simply amazing. We can look back on our lives and see which adults have helped us, through their love and support and encouragement, to grow in our chosen careers. And it’s not so much the career that is supported and encouraged, but the person. It’s the Wholeness – seeing and knowing that this person is treasured for who they are, without imposing any qualifications on what this person wants to do.

The Ankh

Element: Water and Air

The ankh, also known as the Key of Life, is probably one of the most easily recognizable and best known ancient Egyptian symbols. It represents eternal life and in many ancient carvings Egyptian deities and Pharaoh’s are shown holding it.

While the origins of the Ankh are unclear, archeologists say that in the ancient language the word means quite literally “Life”. One theory as to the symbol itself says that the loop on top represents the womb (feminine) while the cross at the bottom represents the penis (male) and when the two are put together life is formed from it. It is also said to symbolize the elements of both water and air. In pagan tradition’s these elements are considered life-giving.

When the Ankh is used as an amulet it is believed to give the wearer good health and longevity and protection against evil and negative energy.

Daily Good: Seeking Solitude in Nature: A Meditation Teacher’s Story

“By the time we’re 60, we will have been alive for almost 22,000 days on this planet, rarely, if ever, stopping to watch just one. By immersion into nature in solitude, we allow the natural human to become entrained to the nature of the planet we are part of. I had been camping in solitude in nature — on a hill over the ocean on the coast of California — as I have done twice a year for the past 20+ years. I jokingly call it my “People Fast”, which I have always assumed I needed since, as a meditation teacher and an actress, what I do in the world involves intense and intimate interactions with people, and I figured that we always need an opportunity to “clear out” and refresh or reground ourselves. But there is more to it than that — at least for me.” Meditation teacher Stephanie Nash shares more. { read more }

Inner Journey:

DON’T REJECT THE EGO

“Nourishing the soul is the process of drinking at the life stream, coming back to one’s true self, embracing the whole of one’s experience – good, bad, or ugly; painful or exalted; dull or boring.”
— Jon Kabat-Zinn

Spiritual teachings sometimes counsel a need to let go of the ego. In our view, though, ego and personality are essential players in our theatre of life. Personality is the vehicle for Spirit to evolve through form. Soul sparks the potential that exists within the personality.

We don’t want the ego to disappear – we want it to open to divine guidance so the two may work together in alignment.

And so the path of personality aims to build a healthy, skilful ego. Ironically, only a strong, mature ego can take responsibility for carrying the consciousness of soul.

“How do we nurture the soul? By revering our own life. By treating it as supremely important. By reaching for the best within ourselves. By learning to love it all, not only the joys and the victories, but also the pain and the struggles.”
— Nathaniel Branden
