If you look around you can probably find a surplus of THINGS that you could do without. (I know I can) When the angels tell us that they are making sure our needs are met they are speaking of necessities, money to pay our bills, food, shelter, clothing, etc. If we aspire to have more then we need to do our part to make it happen.
