When George Orwell was sixteen, he discovered the joy of words while reading Paradise Lost. In this essay, Orwell considers his motivations for writing. In general, he believes writers are motivated by four reasons– sheer egoism, aesthetic enthusiasm, historical impulse, and political purpose. It is the age in which a writer lives that provides the reason. By 1936, Orwell was firmly grounded in political purpose: “Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism.” He explains this is not “wholly public-spirited,” but the drive by “some demon” and while he cannot be certain which of the motivations is actually stronger, it is only when his motivation is political that his books are alive and have meaning.

And since we are actively pursuing our spiritual growth, we can see the changes in ourselves spiritually – we are aware of the changes we create in our lives. So, we are new every day – and we can start fresh from right where we are. Since we know that about ourselves, we can also know that for others – we can let go of grievances and allow for the possibilities.

Today’s Deity: Baba Yaga

In Russian folklore, Baba Yaga or Baba Jaga (UK: /ˌbɑːbə ˈjɑːɡə/; Russian: Баба Яга [ˈbabə jɪˈɡa]) is a supernatural being (or one of a trio of sisters of the same name) who appears as a deformed and/or ferocious-looking woman. In Russian fairytales Baba Yaga flies around in a mortar, wields a pestle, and dwells deep in the forest in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs. Baba Yaga may help or hinder those that encounter or seek her out and may play a maternal role and has associations with forest wildlife. According to Vladimir Propp’s folktale morphology, Baba Yaga commonly appears as either a donor, villain, or may be altogether ambiguous.
Andreas Johns identifies Baba Yaga as “one of the most memorable and distinctive figures in eastern European folklore,” and observes that she is “enigmatic” and often exhibits “striking ambiguity.” Johns summarizes Baba Yaga as “a many-faceted figure, capable of inspiring researchers to see her as a Cloud, Moon, Death, Winter, Snake, Bird, Pelican or Earth Goddess, totemic matriarchal ancestress, female initiator, phallic mother, or archetypal image”

The law of karma is the law of cause and effect. It works unavoidably when there is no consciousness — when we are not present in the moment. When there is no consciousness, the past creates the future.

The law of Love supersedes the law of karma. It intervenes in the process by focusing in the present. In fact, one could say that Love is being fully present. When anything is initiated in Love in the present, the future of that reality will be purposeful, meaningful, loving and powerful.
