ThoughtCo: What Does It Mean When You Dream About Snakes?

We’ve all had weird and unusual dreams before, and it’s believed that elements of our dreams are keys to our subconscious. Most dream experts agree that the meanings of animals in dreams vary based on what the animal is doing and how you feel about it. Let’s take a look what dreams about snakes can mean in your life.

Today’s Deity: Laughing Buddha – Meaning behind the Happy Statues

Tonight at work I was determined to learn something new in the realm of positivity. While tumbling all over Tumblr, I saw Happy Buddha and decided to google him. I’ve always had a thing for the happy chubby statues but I didn’t know much about them – or that there was so much to know.

My googling adventure started simple with a visit to wikipedia to learn the difference between him and the founder of buddhism – Gautama Buddha- and why he was so dang cheerful. My mind was blown by the hidden meanings within each statue. Before I knew it I was learning the exact position in the house your little figurine should be placed. Haphazardly collecting Buddhas could devastate the Feng Shui of your home.

Daily Good: The Teachings of Grass

How do we relate to the land that sustains us–as a source of belonging or as a source of belongings? As the planet teeters on the brink of environmental collapse, botanist, teacher, and author Robin Wall Kimmerer urges us to consider our broken relationship to the Earth and the hard choices that lie before us by examining the history of her Potawatomi ancestors. Through cultivating the sense of respect and gratitude for nature inherent in indigenous teachings, Kimmerer invites us to reclaim that wisdom and renew our earthly relationships to restore honor in the way we live.

USE DOWN TIMES TO GOOD ADVANTAGE

“The affairs of the world will go on forever. Do not delay the practice of meditation.”
— Milarepa

In our busy schedules, we can often complain that we don’t have time to meditate. But if we are sincere in our desire to go inside, we can create our own moments of stillness in the midst of our activity.

Stopped at a traffic light? Do some deep breathing. Waiting in line at the bank or grocery store? Repeat an uplifting word such as ‘love’ or ‘peace.’ Riding the bus to and from work? Value these times as an opportunity to close your eyes and go within orto say a little prayer.

“Wherever you go in the midst of movement and activity, carry your stillness within you. Then the chaotic movement around you will never overshadow your access to the reservoir of creativity, the field of pure potentiality.”
— Deepak Chopra

The world may seem to be working overtime to baffle or confuse you, but you don’t have to take the bait. If you’re offered something that seems too perfectly tailored to your tastes or desires, it’s OK to be graciously skeptical. You can appear cautious rather than distrustful. Keep things simple today and minimize getting upset by torn or unsettled feelings.

Daily Good: How Doctors Use Poetry

While doctors are educated to focus primarily on medical science, some are beginning to expand their outlook and focus on something greater: language, in particular, poetry. While the Hippocratic Oath many physicians take requires them to “remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug”, these words are all too rare in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and outpatient clinics. In this article, medical student Danny W. Linggonegoro explores the breakthrough science that is finding that the power of words is sometimes more potent than the power of medicine. Read on to learn how poetry can boost mood, reduce pain, and help patients better connect with what it means to be human.

Inner Journey:

RAISING YOUR SIGHTS

“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest – a kind of optical delusion ofhis consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all livingcreatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
— Albert Einstein

To grow in consciousness, we expand our perspectives on life. So how do we do that? The more we work with the universal — the concept of unity and wholeness, the more everything makes sense. Parts have meaning when they are understood to be parts of a biggerpicture.

Consciousness is all about relationships — especially how the lower relates to the higher and how the darkness can exist within the light. Hold and experience contradictions like anger with love. Let opposites coexist in you without choosing one over theother.

“Higher consciousness, enLIGHTenment, comes from meaningful experiences and lessons passed with the understanding that there truly is only one law – the Law of Love. When one leads a life expressing this belief, the mindand heart begin to open to new realities, and other dimensional truths become known.”
— Dr. Norma Milanovich & Dr. Shirley McCune

Inner Journey:

PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT

“…conflict is the primary engine of creativity and innovation. People don’t learn by staring into a mirror; people learn by encountering difference.”
— Ronald Heifetz

In his book, ‘Men, Women and Relationships,’ John Gray says, “People are different. Recognizing this fundamental truth is essential for creating positive and loving relationships. In practice, however, … we demand that the people in our lives feel, think, and behave as we would. And when they react differently we make them wrong or invalidate them; we try to fix them when they really need understanding and nurturing; we try to improve them when instead they need acceptance, appreciation and trust.”

We each bring different gifts to this world. We each have different work to do. Our lives are enriched when we can celebrate these differences rather than resent, resist and reject them. As we get more secure in who we are, we get more compassionate toward others.

“Homogeneity makes for healthy milk but anemic friendships. We need relationships that cross culturally imposed lines to enlarge our hearts and expand our vistas.”
— Dan Schmidt

When we moved here in December of 2004, one of the first things we did was to walk down into the wetland area. My husband was on this trek to “claim” the land he had chosen to steward. Here on Earth, we have the moon’s gravitational pull to thank for the ocean tides, among other things. But what about moonlight?
The light reflected off the moon has an effect on life on Earth, which isn’t surprising, but not every lunar influence is heralded by a wolf’s howl.

EarthSky News: Vega and its constellation Lyra

Tonight, look eastward during the evening hours, and it’s hard to miss the season’s signature star formation, called the Summer Triangle. Its stars – Vega, Deneb and Altair – are the first three to light up the eastern half of sky after sunset, and their bright and sparkling radiance is even visible from light-polluted cities or on a moonlit night.

Patheos-Pagan: Of Witches And Faeries: A Brief Examination Of Working With the Fae

As we head further into the Summer Tide, I find that the Fair Folk are increasingly more active – or at least making themselves more known to we humans. Due to the increase in Fae activity, there is always an influx of articles being written regarding these Spirits during this time of year. However, as of late I’ve noted these articles convey overwhelming negative messages regarding the Faeries.

Inner Journey:

SING YOUR OWN SONG

“Since you are like no other being ever created since the beginning of time, you are incomparable.”
— Brenda Ueland

Great forces are directing you to conform to the patterns of your society. You have DNA that has been handed down from generation to generation, coding repeated behaviour patterns into your being. You have archetypal energies setting the standards for how you behave as a man or a woman, as husband or wife, as father or mother …. You are immersed in consensual reality, whereby the world around you reflects societal understanding of how life has been and is to be.

At the same time, you have an even greater force within you inspiring you to wake up and recognize the reality of who you are. This force, the creative power underlying the entire universe, is urging you to create brand new standards of reality.

The status quo is blind to our creative power. Create a brand new world for yourself, one that meets your deepest needs, and you will help raise the quality of consciousness of the entire world.

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
— Gandhi

Sharing

“Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed and hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world.”

-John Lennon (1940-1980)

With the world in such a state of flux, it might be difficult to imagine ALL the people sharing all the world… but it is not impossible. There’s a saying: “Think Globally, Act Locally.” If we each started there, kind of a “grass roots” or “backyard” approach, imagine the impact we could make house by house, neighborhood by neighborhood, community by community.

ThoughtCo: Make a Loaf of Lammas Bread

Bread is the ultimate symbol of the Lammas season. After all, once the grain is harvested, it is milled and baked into bread, which is then consumed. It is the cycle of the harvest come full circle. The spirit of the grain god lives on through us in the eating of the bread. In many traditions, a loaf of special bread is baked in the shape of a man, to symbolize the god of the harvest.

Daily Good: Vesuvius at Home: The Power of Emily Dickinson

“For years I have been not so much envisioning Emily Dickinson as trying to visit, to enter her mind, through her poems and letters, and through my own intimations of what it could have meant to be one of the two mid-19th-century American geniuses, and a woman, living in Amherst, Massachusetts. Of the other genius, Walt Whitman, Dickinson wrote that she had heard his poems were “disgraceful.” She knew her own were unacceptable by her world’s standards of poetic convention, and of what was appropriate, in particular, for a woman poet. Seven were published in her lifetime, all edited by other hands; more than a thousand were laid away in her bedroom chest, to be discovered after her death.

A Little Bit of Besom Lore

1) Never give away a used broom. It bring bad luck to you and the person you gave it to.

2) You should never sweep your house at night. The faeries and spirits that live in and around your home find it an insult.

3) To keep ghost out of your home, you should lean your broom against the door jamb.

4) If you drop a broom on the floor, you will have company.

5) If you unmarried and step over a broom that is on the floor, you will never marry.

6) The first items brought into a new home should be a new broom and a loaf of bread. It will bring good luck.

7) Never sweep dust out of the front door with your broom. All the good luck will be swept out with the dust!

8) Taking a broom across the water brings bad luck.

9) You should never lean a broom against a bed or the person who sleeps on that side will die.

10) Never hit someone with a broom, it will make them lazy.

Inner Journey:

TRUST IN ABUNDANCE

“Once, when we were discussing a world peace project with my teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, somebody asked him, ‘Where is all the money going to come from?’ And he replied without hesitation, ‘From wherever it is at the moment.'”
— Deepak Chopra

How can you open to greater trust that you’ll always have what you need?

Fear, doubt, anxiety and disbelief all serve to repel abundance from us. Faith, love and gratitude for the gifts of our lives keep energy and abundance flowing. The more we trust in our well being, the more it will be realized.

“Manifestation is an act of trust. It is the soul pouring itself out into its world, like a fisherman casting a net to gather in the fish he seeks; with each cast properly made, we will bring what we need to us, but first we must hurl ourselves into the depths without knowing just what lies beneath us.”

A Note from the Universe

Usually, the best way to find the yellow brick road of your life is to start out on the dusty, dirt one.

And then let yourself become so preoccupied in making the best of it, having fun, and challenging yourself that you actually stop paying attention to the path.

Until, one day, not so long from now, with a new best friend, wearing cool clothes, feeling awesome, a teeny tiny bit taller, fresh from a WOW vacation, looking for the path you just left, you’ll notice that it’s 24 carats… baby.

And you’ll wonder for a long, long time, sipping on some exotic fruit drink, when the transformation actually took place…

Tripping,

Sharing

“Sharing what you have is more important than what you have.”

-Albert M. Wells, Jr.

Sharing is not limited to material things. We can share our memories, experiences, and knowledge for example. The beauty in this is that we aren’t giving those things away – we couldn’t if we tried! But they are so valuable, and they become even more valuable, when we share them other people. The most simple advice can be such a treasure. The fact that we are open and willing to share what we have learned can make this journey more beneficial for all of us.

Daily Good: Creating Welcoming Space

“Hospitality means creating welcoming space for the other. Henri J. Nouwen notes that the Dutch word for hospitality, gastvrijheid, means ‘the freedom of the guest.’ It entails creating not just physical room but emotional spaciousness where the stranger can enter and be himself or herself, where the stranger can become ally instead of threat, friend instead of enemy.” In a time when it is more crucial than ever for humanity to revisit its relationship to strangers, this passage from Sr. Marilyn Lacey shines like a beacon.

There’s a lot to admire about these quirky critters.

Pity the poor opossum. The oft-maligned marsupial definitely suffers from an image problem — it is frequently perceived more as a giant, dirty, scavenging rat rather than a cute creature of the wild. But whether you love them or hate them, North America’s only marsupial has a set of unique characteristics that might transform aversion into affection.

Wise Woman Herbal: The Rhythms of Life
by Ann Marie Fryer Wiboltt

Today I went for a walk in my garden, which is nestled among the fields and woods with late summer flowers. It was humid and hot. The leaves of the near by maple trees had begun to turn yellow and orange, one by one spiraling to the ground. I felt the warmth of the air touching my skin and the wet, flexible soil below my feet. With my awareness I began to sense life itself. I sensed inwardly how the earth breathes and changes. I entered into the blue of the sky; let it permeate my whole being and felt the reverence that embraces the earth. I was filled with joy and reverence of just being.

EarthSky News: Moon to sweep by Jupiter July 12 to 14

On the evenings of July 12, 13 and 14, 2019, watch for the bright waxing gibbous moon to swing by the giant planet Jupiter. Fortunately, the king planet is so bright that this world can easily withstand the lunar glare. After all, Jupiter is the 4th-brightest light in the heavens, after the sun, moon and planet Venus. Venus is a morning object, virtually lost in the sun’s glare now, so there’s no way to mistake Venus for Jupiter in the July evening sky.

“Our deepest need is for the joy that comes with loving and being loved, with knowing we are of genuine use to others.”

Are you more self-conscious or other-conscious?

Watch your motives for the day. Are they generally about you (your own desires and needs) or are they about others and their needs? There are no right and wrong answers here.

We must guard, though, that we aren’t using service to others as a means to get our own ego needs met. If we are, we would be wise to meet our own needs first so our interactions with others are not primarily self- serving.

“We are able to be of service to those who suffer only to the extent that we have been able to transform fear in our own lives.”

EarthSky News: Moon’s near side is its dark side

Tonight, while the moon is a few days shy of meeting up with the king planet Jupiter, let’s see if we can make out the dark areas on tonight’s waxing gibbous moon. These smooth, low-lying lunar plains are called maria, the plural for the word mare, the Latin word for sea. You should be able to see the darkened portions on the moon with the eye alone. The dark maria on the moon’s near side – the solidified remnants of ancient lunar seas of molten magma – make the near side of the moon reflect less light than the far side, which has fewer maria

Inner Journey:

REVIEW AND RECOMMIT

“Few people have any next, they live from hand to mouth without a plan, and are always at the end of their line.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just think: When we are driving, we know where we want to go and we plot out our route. When we plan and prepare a meal, we follow a recipe and monitor the food as it cooks.

How much attention do we give to planning the direction of our lives?

Taking the time to review our quality of life gives us a chance to re-evaluate what we are doing and where we want to go. It lets us fine-tune our direction, to ensure we are on track for what we most want.

Stop and think about your last 6 months. What did you learn? What would you like to do differently? Where do you want to recommit?

“Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.”
— A. A. Milne

“Always have a plan, and believe in it. Nothing happens by accident.”
— Chuck Knox

Uncertainty

“Uncertainty and mystery are energies of life. Don’t let them scare you unduly, for they keep boredom at bay and spark creativity.”
-R.I. Fitzhenry

We live in a world of uncertainty. No matter how hard we plan or schedule or try to control things, the truth is that anything can happen, at any time! We can embrace that, and take what comes- or we can live in a state of apprehension. But we can’t change the “unknowingness” – that’s just a part of life, so we might as well enjoy it!

Inner Journey:

THE SOURCE OF ANGER

“Anger is that powerful internal force that blows out the light of reason.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

How does anger typically surface in your life?

We usually get angry at someone, don’t we? We judge that someone has done something wrong and we want them to be punished.

In truth, the actions of others are never to blame. It’s our thinking – our blaming and judgment – that causes the anger. And we blame and judge because we have a need that has not been met.

In his book ‘Nonviolent Communication,’ Marshall B. Rosenberg advises that rather than blame others, we are better served by directing our energy towards meeting our own needs.

He offers a simple tool for change. Instead of saying, ‘I am angry because they …’ we can say, ‘I am angry because I am needing ….’

“At the core of all anger is a need that is not being fulfilled.”
— Marshall B. Rosenberg

“How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it.”
— Marcus Aurelius

Uncertainty

“The unknown is what it is. And to be frightened of it is what sends everybody scurrying around chasing dreams, illusions, wars, peace, love, hate, all that… Accept that it’s unknown, and it’s plain sailing.”
-John Lennon

Why is it so difficult for us to just accept the unknown? We tend to feel like we have to “make” things happen. Sure, we must take action, and work towards our goals – but at the same time if we could also relax and know that however things turn out, that’s the way they’re supposed to be. The process itself is really where we learn. And at the same time, since everything is changeable, and everything is possible, we can always start again!
