Daily Good: 9 Rules for the Woke Birdwatcher

In overlooking, denying, evading this complexity–which is nothing more than the disquieting complexity of ourselves–we are diminished and we perish; only within this web of ambiguity, paradox, this hunger, danger, darkness, can we find at once ourselves and the power that will free us from ourselves.

  • James Baldwin –

9 Rules for the Woke Birdwatcher

“1.Lower your binoculars. See bird and person in the full context of their being, feathers or skin. We all share the same air, same water, same earth, and same fate in the end. A Note from the Universe

Changing one’s life is easy, and there are lots of ways to go about it, though all exact some sort of price:

Pinpointing invisible, limiting, self-sabotaging beliefs — Extremely demanding on brain cells and much easier to do if you have a friend who channels the dead, but either way, it’ll keep you busy for the rest of your life.

Discovering what occurrences in the past have misprogrammed you — A therapist can help, though expensive if you don’t have insurance, but you can both pretend you’re a complex person and that if it wasn’t for your childhood, you’d have the perfect life.

Distinguishing between those who really love you and those who just wish to use you — Super tricky, and may destroy perfectly good relationships, but with a good a lawyer you can laugh all the way to the bank while accepting little or no responsibility for your own happiness.

These are just a few of the most popular and widely written-about methods. Of course, you could also just begin imagining and moving toward the life of your dreams, treating everyone with kindness, and assuming all is well — profoundly and radically effective for both short and long-term gains, but totally lacking in drama, requires solo efforts, and is much too easy for most people to take seriously.

Oh well,

The Universe

Self-Determination

“We are not born all at once, but by bits. The body first, and the spirit later; and the birth and growth of the spirit, in those who are attentive to their own inner life, are slow and exceedingly painful. Our mothers are racked with the pains of our physical birth; we ourselves suffer the longer pains of our spiritual growth.”

-Mary Antin, 1912

The birth analogy is used often in describing spiritual awakening. I read recently a zen saying that explained that we are actually born twice. Once as an egg out of our mothers. And then again as we break out of our shells we birth ourselves into awakening. Think of what it takes for a bird to break out of its shell. It’s hard work, but the bird has to do it all by itself in order to be strong enough to survive in the world. Sometimes our spiritual growth is hard work, and painful. But when we break through we can spread our wings and fly

When Abuela Grillo (Grandmother Cricket) sings, it rains, and in a country marked by water shortages, the film is a response to the privatization of Bolivia’s water resources by foreign corporations. The Cochabamba water wars of 2000 was a series of massive protests by the indigenous community to retain access to their water supply, which eventually pressured the government to revoke the international contract. Voiced by Bolivian singer Luzmila Carpio, traditional Quechua singing weaves indigenous melody throughout the film, further illuminating the cultural roots of this fight for the universal right to pure water.

Inner Journey: DIRECT YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

“The power to move the world is in the subconscious mind.”
— William James

Our subconscious mind creates our lives perfectly according to how it has been programmed. It works 24 hours of every day, 365 days per year. It accepts instructions from the conscious mind, checks on old inner programming and executes.

The subconscious mind acts on old beliefs stored over a lifetime. Many of those beliefs you may have accepted without thinking. Or you may have absorbed them when you were too young to exercise choice. Many of the beliefs that govern your life may no longer match what you now hold to be true.

Nonetheless, the subconscious mind is the director till you rewrite the scripts. Put some effort into getting it working on your positive, conscious intentions instead of your old limiting, unconscious beliefs and your life will change.

“If a man devotes himself to the instructions of his own unconscious, it can bestow this gift [of renewal], so that suddenly life, which has been stale and dull, turns into a rich unending inner adventure, full of creative possibilities.”
— Marie-Louise von Franz

Choice
“Guess if you can, choose if you dare.”

-Pierre Corneille

Sometimes making a choice is being courageous. It’s movement forward. It’s going ahead. When we can’t choose we’re stuck, and immobile. Once we choose then action can take place. And then as things happen we’ll have more choices to make. That’s just natural progression. We can adjust, we can learn, and choosing makes that possible

Daily Good: Two Words That Can Change a Life

Words are but the vague shadows of the volumes we mean. Little audible links, they are, chaining together great inaudible feelings and purposes.

Theodore Dreiser –

Two Words That Can Change a Life

“As I walked into the parking lot, I spotted the woman returning her shopping cart, and I remembered something in my purse that could help her in a different but hopefully profound way. It wasn’t a handful of cash or a lead on a job for her husband, but maybe — just maybe — it would make her life better. My heart pounded as I approached the woman. “Excuse me,” I said, my voice trembling a bit. “I couldn’t help overhearing what you said to the cashier. It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time right now. I’m so sorry. I’d like to give you something.” And I handed her a business-sized card. When the woman read the card’s only two words, she began to cry. And through her tears, she said, “You have no idea how much this means to me.”” Cheryl Rice shares more in this piece about the two simple words that touched her life and then rippled out to touch many others. { read more }

Moderation

“The pursuit, even of the best things, ought to be calm and tranquil.”

-Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 B.C.)

Moderation in our temperament is essential to our health and well-being. It is exhausting going from euphoria when something goes right to depression when something goes wrong. Our middle ground here comes from knowing that external forces do not influence our emotions. We decide how to react, we can choose to accept that we really are okay no matter how things go.

Inner Journey: WHAT ARE YOU FEELING?

“We know too much and feel too little. At least, we feel too little of those creative emotions from which a good life springs.”
— Bertrand Russell

Many of the qualities that bring fulfilment in life are feelings, like love, joy, freedom and gratitude.

In our overly rational world, we tend to think about how we feel, which, of course, is not feeling at all — it’s thinking.

Honour your feelings and be willing to experience them. They give us valuable feedback about what is and what is not working in our lives. They are the signposts to meaningful inner work.

“With just a little education and practice on how to manage your emotions, you can move into a new experience of life so rewarding that you will be motivated to keep on managing your emotional nature in order to sustain it. The payoff is delicious in terms of improved quality of life.”

Films
“Good movies make you care, make you believe in possibilities again.”

-Pauline Kael, 1968

Some movies are so big, so fabulous, so rich with story and action and setting and wardrobe. “Gone With the Wind” is like that. Wow. It’s absolutely breathtaking, and a true classic. And some movies are smaller, just a more personal story, that doesn’t need much more than the people involved to get the point across. “Rain Man” is that kind of a movie. In the film, Tom Cruise’s character discovers that he has an autistic brother, played by Dustin Hoffman. The journey, how these two get to know each other, and get to understand themselves, and what is important in life, is just beautiful. It strikes a chord because we all have relationships in our lives from which we can learn about ourselves and our connection to the world.

Daily Tarot: The Pope

Today can be easy if you don’t try to swim upstream. Do what’s expected of you (and what you need to do, anyway) and don’t rebel, at least not outwardly. You’re given plenty of authority to convince people to help you if necessary, and there should be few if any arguments. Be calm, respect authority, and you’ll automatically be given the respect you deserve, plus more. Get a lot done!

The Tetraktys: A Beltane Tale to Celebrate With the Fae

Hello witchy friends! Since Beltane is near, I wanted to write a post about it. To be honest, I wasn’t vey inspired by the idea. But then, I had a sudden burst of inspiration. The images came into my head, and the words started flowing.

Now, this isn’t your typical Wiccan post about Beltane. Here, you won’t find any correspondences chart about Beltane. You wont even find a list of things to do for May Day (if you pass way to much time on witchy blogs like myself, you surely know what I’m talking about)

A CELEBRATION OF MAY DAY : BELTANE by Mike Nichols

“Perhaps it’s just as well that you won’t be here …
to be offended by the sight of our May Day celebrations.”
—Lord Summerisle to Sgt. Howie from The Wicker Man

There are four great festivals of the Pagan Celtic year and the modern Witches’ calendar, as well. The two greatest of these are Halloween (the beginning of winter) and May Day (the beginning of summer). Being opposite each other on the wheel of the year, they separate the year into halves. Halloween (also called Samhain) is the Celtic New Year and is generally considered the more important of the two, though May Day runs a close second. Indeed, in some areas—notably Wales—it is considered “the great holiday

DANCE THROUGH YOUR DAY

“Mix a little foolishness with your serious plans: it’s lovely to be silly at the right moment.”
— Horace

Today, we invite you to do the Take-Your-Time Tango. In his book ‘Games for the Soul,’ Drew Leder challenges us to dance through our days with the graceful, slow elegance of a tango dancer.

“Slow down a notch,” Leder counsels. “Do whatever you do in a calm and leisurely fashion. … As much as possible, don’t be driven by inner fear, external deadlines, or rushed companions to stumble through a speeded-up dance. Act as if you have all the time in the world. Come to think of it, you do: No one else has any more hours.”

So stand (or sit) tall. Raise your chin as you gather your full concentration, dignity and self confidence to glide smoothly and beautifully through the day.

“We look at the dance to impart the sensation of living in an affirmation of life, to energize the spectator into keener awareness of the vigor, the mystery, the humor, the variety, and the wonder of life.”
— Martha Graham

Words

“You can stroke people with words.”

-F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940)

What would we do without language? This is how we communicate. Words by themselves are so innocuous, but when we put them together, combine them together in such a way, they can be bitterly poisonous, or powerfully healing. Words can carry with them so much meaning. Through words we can express tenderness, and compassion.

May’s Full Flower Moon

MayFullMoon_zps55381b23[1]
May’s Full Flower Moon
Saturday May 18, 2019

2:11 pm PST/ 3:11 pm  MST/ 5:11 pm EST

“Dancing midst the flowers beneath the full moon’s light,
the wee folk tend the gardens on this soft spring night.”

May is the time when flowers seem to be everywhere and is most likely why the Native Americans called this months full moon the “Flower Moon”.

This full moon keeps the spring theme of new beginnings and fertility rolling. Everywhere you look there is new growth. This is a great time to sow seeds in both your outdoor and inner gardens. Career, finance and prosperity are good areas to concentrate on for new beginnings. This month which started with the fire sabbat of Beltane is still keeping things burning. Lust, passion and renewed vigor put a bounce in our step as we move toward the new things this moon has to offer.

To celebrate this fiery month and full moon, wrap yourself in reds, oranges and yellow or wear warm stones like amber ,garnet and ruby. Take special care to nourish your inner garden this month. If you set intentions or thought seeds for yourself last month, remember to take steps to help them grow and move forward.

On a very light note, I have been “asked” to remind everyone that brings out the garden fairies! This Full Flower Moon is a wonderful time to welcome the “Wee Folk” in your home and yard. This is a great activity particularly for children. Leave gifts of pretty stones, crystals, shiny beads and other glittery objects in your flower beds and planters. Hang small decorations in your trees and shrubs. The Fae appreciate gifts and love to be remembered!

“On the breeze their laughter floats and magic fills the air,
unveiling natures treasure, her gifts with you they share.”

Cat

There is a long history of witches working with fairies in various ways, both learning from them and being in service to them. Inner Journey:

WHAT IS LOVE?

“When mystics use the word love, they use it very carefully — in the deeply spiritual sense, where to love is to know; to love is to act. If you really love, from the depths of your Consciousness, that love gives you a native wisdom. You perceive the needs of others intuitively and clearly, with detachment from any personal desires; and you know how to act creatively to meet those needs, dexterously surmounting any obstacle that comes in the way. Such is the immense, driving power of love.”
— Eknath Easwaran

“Therefore, when I say that ‘I love,’ it is not I who love, but in reality Love who acts through me. Love is not so much something I do as something that I am. Love is not a doing but a state of being – a relatedness, a connectedness to another mortal, an identification with her or him that simply flows within me and through me, independent of my intentions or my efforts.”
— Robert A. Johnson

“When you are aware that you are the force that is Life, anything is possible. Miracles happen all the time, because those miracles are performed by the heart. The heart is in direct communion with the human soul, and when the heart speaks, even with the resistance of the head, something inside you changes; your heart opens another heart, and true love is possible.”
— Don Miguel Ruiz

Yet we can recognize that beauty, cultivate it, cherish it. We can express beauty, and show gratitude for it.

May’s Full “Flower Moon”

May 29, 2018 at  7:20 am PST / 8:20 am MST / 10:20 am EST

To celebrate this fiery month and full moon, wrap yourself in reds, oranges and yellow or wear warm stones like amber, garnet and ruby.

“On the breeze their laughter floats and magic fills the air,
unveiling nature’s treasure, her gifts with you they share.” (c) Cat 2008)
