The Celtic Tree Month of Holly/ Tinne

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA/Holly 1 by aki fukao/freeimages.com

The Celtic Tree Month of Holly/ Tinne runs from July 8th until August 4th.

HOLLY LORE

Holly has long been associated with death and rebirth in both Pagan and Christian lore and plays an important part in the Winter Solstice. In one Arthurian tale Gawain (representing the Oak King battles with the Green Knight who is armed with a holly club that is the symbol of winter. Both the Holly and the Oak are important during the Summer Solstice. During this time the Sacred White Horse of Oak transforms into the Unicorn of Holly. In ancient Rome, holly was thought to ward against lightning strikes and keep witches away. It was also a popular gift to give friends during the Saturnalia, which was celebrated during the Winter Solstice.

PLANT INFORMATION

Holly is an evergreen shrubby tree, easily recognized by its shiny dark green toothed leaves and blood-red berries. This plant is considered POISONOUS and should not be ingested!! Holly was used for the crafting of wheel shafts for chariots and spear shafts as well. The wood of the holly is white and particularly fine-grained and closely resembles ivory. The berries can be used to make dye

HOLLY IN MAGICK

Holly can be used for spells rest, sleep, and to ease the passage of death. Holly should also be used when attracting a familiar. It is said that a man who carries a bag of holly leaves and berries will attract women. It is also said that the ancient Druids advised people to take holly boughs into their homes during the cold season as a shelter for the fairies and other little people.

HOLLY PEOPLE

Those born during this month are strongly connected to the earth and can have amazing physical strength. Their matter-of-fact solidness and generous spirit is admired and respected by others. Holly people also tend to be very religious or spiritual in an advanced way, and they are usually the last to see it. They are honest, hardworking, truthful, and pretty tolerant of most situations. They are the person you want on your side during a fight if the cause is just one. They see both sides of an argument and will only take sides if they have to.

As a magickal name, Holly is very festive and would be good for a sexy and attractive person. Someone who chooses this name knows they have a temper and can become “prickly” when crossed.

Spirituality & Health: How Rituals Rewire Your Brain

While rituals may define us, we have a hard time defining them. Dig into the science of ritual.
You can spend weeks trying to find a single, satisfying, comprehensive definition of the word ritual, but we simply don’t have one. We can claim that rituals are sacred, public, symbolic performances or private, mundane daily activities, but the truth is that it’s a fuzzy concept

Inner Journey:

CHOOSE DIFFERENTLY TODAY

“It is always your next move.”
— Napoleon Hill

The great benefit of heightened awareness is that we have more choice in how we live our lives. At any moment, we can purposefully choose a new experience for ourselves. We can choose to pay attention, breathe more deeply, laugh, rest, play, appreciate, do something different – the possibilities are endless.

Whenever you remember, TAKE YOURSELF OFF AUTO-PILOT and really examine your situation. Take charge and make a choice that will enrich your experience. At the end of the day, reflect on what happened and how you felt when you chose a new line of thought, feeling or action.

“We cannot tell what may happen to us in the strange medley of life. But we can decide what happens in us — how we can take it, what we do with it — and that is what really counts in the end.”
— Joseph Fort Newton

“When a defining moment comes along, you can do one of two things. Define the moment, or let the moment define you.”
— Tin Cup (the movie)

And remember: “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.”
— Neil Peart

Humor
“When humor goes, there goes civilization.”

-Erma Bombeck

We need humor to balance out all the other “stuff” that is going on in the world every day. Where would we be without our ability to laugh at ourselves. Situation comedies have always been popular on TV because they depict “situations” that we’ve all been in and can relate to – but they do it in such a way that we can see how funny the whole thing is! Today look at the world this way: “My Life is a SitCom!” Of course, you are the star of the show! And all your friends are relatives are supporting players. I’ll bet you’ll find lots of punch lines in the script!

There may be a lot of possible things to do and places to go today. You don’t need to instantly decide anything upon waking up. Let your intuition guide you, and continue listening to that intuition as you begin down the path you’ve chosen. If work or family have dictated today, don’t be resentful but let intuition sort out the easiest and best route for you to follow.

Full Buck  Moon

Date& Time:  July 4/5 at 9:44 pm PST/ 10:44 pm MST / 12:44 EST July 5

The Farmer’s Almanac calls this moon the Buck Moon because this is the time when bucks grow new antlers. Other names for this full moon are Thunder Moon, Summer Moon (colonial ), Hungry Ghost Moon (china), Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), Crane Moon (Choctaw), Moon of Claiming (Celtic), Mead Moon (Medieval English), Rose Moon, Blessing Moon (pagan).

This Full Moon is in Capricorn and we will also have a lunar eclipse to add to the mix. Use the energy to rid yourself of toxic people and situations. It can also help us to find a balance between our lives and work by generating answers and ideas. The Buck Moon is a good time for divination, teamwork, and prosperity magick.

You can a little something extra to your magickal workings by using July’s herbs hyssop, lemon balm, mugwort, catnip, or leaves from ash or oak trees. You can also celebrate this month’s moon by wearing the colors blue-gray, silver or green, and adorning yourself with carnelian, citrine, moonstone, pearls, opals, or a simple white agate.

Inner Journey:

TRUST YOURSELF

“I never know what the next lesson is going to be, because we’re not supposed to know; we’re supposed to trust ourselves to discover it.”
— Melody Beattie

How deeply do you trust your own guidance?

Always trust that you know what’s best for you. To move forward in your life, gather information from the ‘experts,’ consider how their advice relates to your situation and then act only on what feels right for you. What does your whole being (mind, body and soul) say ‘Yes!’ to?

You are the only expert for your own life.

“I trust so much in the power of the heart and the soul; I know that the answer to what we need to do next is in our own hearts. All we have to do is listen, then take that one step further and trust what we hear. We will be taught what we need to learn.”
— Melody Beattie

“Ultimately, we must learn to trust ourselves. When we do this intimately and intelligently, the world opens full of meaning before us. We find that we ourselves are the doorway to a fathomless understanding of the source of life itself. We need only to learn to walk through it.”
— James Thornton

Gardening
“All gardeners live in beautiful places because they make them so.”

-Joseph Joubert (1754-1824)

This I’m looking at “gardening” in the bigger sense of the word. There’s a reason why we understand the philosophy: ‘You reap what you sow’ – in gardening nothing is more true! When we plant radishes, we can’t expect gardenias to spring up. This life is our garden, and we can tend to it, and make it a beautiful place to be.

Daily Tarot: Wheel of Fortune

Restlessness and boredom could slow you down and take you off on some unintended tangent. If you can’t break free of the usual routine today, do what’s necessary and perhaps schedule more delicate tasks for another time when it will be easier to be precise and attend to details. Know your own limits and if possible don’t take on something that will only frustrate you. If you must, start slow.
