Inner Journey: USE DOWN TIMES TO GOOD ADVANTAGE

“The affairs of the world will go on forever. Do not delay the practice of meditation.”
— Milarepa

In our busy schedules, we can often complain that we don’t have time to meditate. But if we are sincere in our desire to go inside, we can create our own moments of stillness in the midst of our activity.

Stopped at a traffic light? Do some deep breathing. Waiting in line at the bank or grocery store? Repeat an uplifting word such as ‘love’ or ‘peace.’ Riding the bus to and from work? Value these times as an opportunity to close your eyes and go within or to say a little prayer.

“Wherever you go in the midst of movement and activity, carry your stillness within you. Then the chaotic movement around you will never overshadow your access to the reservoir of creativity, the field of pure potentiality.”

There’s a quote that Yoda says in one of the Star Wars films that I use on my boys all the time: “Do or do not, there is no try.” They even gave me a Yoda action figure one year as a present because they said I love Yoda so much! “Our purpose is hidden in our joy, our inspiration, our excitement. As we act on what shows up in our life our purpose shows up.”
— James King

For many of us, our joy is truly activated when we get a bigger picture of who we are and why we are here.

Most of us need to enlarge our self-concept. We may see ourselves as a bag of bones but, in truth, we are eternal, multi-faceted and multi-dimensional spiritual beings having a human experience. It’s time to think of ourselves as much larger and grander than just a physical and emotional being confined in a body.

Some movies just stick with us. There are certain phrases, certain scenes, we always remember. And we can learn from the effect that the movies have on us. Remember how Dorothy, in “The Wizard of Oz,” just wanted to go home? And she was really there all the time. What a powerful message. Ponder the spectre of yourself as one human being in the over six billion people on Earth. See Earth as one tiny planet in a galaxy of billions of stars, and that galaxy as just one of billions of galaxies in our expanding universe. We are so minute as to be nonexistent. In your journal, write about the paradox of being both microscopic and immense.

Study
“The great business of study is for a mind adapted and adequate to all times and all occasions; to which all nature is then laid open, and which may be said to possess the key of her inexhaustible riches.”

-Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792)

Study is exercise for the mind. And what happens, is that just like when we exercise our body and we discover how strong we are, when we exercise our mind we discover how wise we are! The muscles were there all the time, but when we work them, and pay attention to their development, they serve us by being able to lift weights, or hike a mountain, or run a marathon. And our mind is there for us to use the same way. We can be creative, we can be problem-solvers, we can be wise. Our strength, both in body and mind, comes from within.

Study
“Just as eating contrary to the inclination is injurious to the health, so study without desire spoils the memory, and it retains nothing that it takes in.”

-Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

A computer is impartial. It will save and store anything, and we can retrieve it from the computer just as we put it in there. But our minds don’t work that way. If something doesn’t matter to us, if it has no relevance to anything in our lives, then there is no reason for us to remember it, and we usually don’t. But when we choose to study something that is important to us, when we have that desire, then what we learn becomes a part of who we are. We make room for the memory in our mind, and we use the information in context with what we already know.

Inner Journey: SING YOUR OWN SONG

“Since you are like no other being ever created since the beginning of time, you are incomparable.”
— Brenda Ueland

Great forces are directing you to conform to the patterns of your society. You have DNA that has been handed down from generation to generation, coding repeated behaviour patterns into your being. You have archetypal energies setting the standards for how you behave as a man or a woman, as husband or wife, as father or mother …. You are immersed in consensual reality, whereby the world around you reflects societal understanding of how life has been and is to be.

At the same time, you have an even greater force within you inspiring you to wake up and recognize the reality of who you are. This force, the creative power underlying the entire universe, is urging you to create brand new standards of reality.

The status quo is blind to our creative power. Create a brand new world for yourself, one that meets your deepest needs, and you will help raise the quality of consciousness of the entire world.

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

A Note from the Universe

I have to admit when we thought of adding the dimension of “time” to space, it was not wildly popular.

True, it would make possible evolution, reunions, and cute before-and-after photos. But it would add to the illusion of separation… “horror of horrors!” Spontaneous manifestations would spontaneously cease… “eee-gad!” And the only way anyone could get anything done, would be if they held onto and moved with their vision in thought, word, and deed, even when present circumstances appeared ABSOLUTELY unchanged for their efforts… yeah, “SIGN ME UP!!!!”

Thinking of you beaming with childlike joy

-The Bratzlaver (1770-1811)

This is good advice. Meditation might be called a form of study. It’s allowing the wisdom of the universe to come to us. We can also read, or write, or take classes, or talk with wise people. Daily Good: Meeting Our Pain With Compassion

Having compassion starts and ends with having compassion for all those unwanted parts of ourselves. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.

Pema Chodron –

Meeting Our Pain With Compassion

“I’d like to explore the essential place of compassion in our lives in a very simple way. As human beings we have a conscious awareness that is open to what is. Our very nature is openness. On a feeling level this openness shows up as sensitivity, tenderness, rawness, as an exquisite receptivity and responsiveness. As a consequence of this delicacy, we are also easily hurt. Its like the softness of our skin–which is easily bruised, yet allows us to experience a wide range of subtle textures and temperatures.” John Welwood shares more in this short essay on self compassion. { read more }

Inner Journey: THE PARADOX OF LIFE’S JOURNEY

“It is only when we realize that life is taking us nowhere that it begins to have meaning.”
— P.D. Ouspensky

“All major mystical traditions have recognized that there is a paradox at the heart of the journey of return to Origin. …Put simply, this is that we are already what we seek, and that what we are looking for on the Path with such an intensity of striving and passion and discipline is already within and around us at all moments. The journey and all its different ordeals are all emanations of the One Spirit that is manifesting everything in all dimensions; every rung of the ladder we climb toward final awareness is made of the divine stuff of awareness itself; Divine Consciousness is at once creating and manifesting all things and acting in and as all things in various states of self-disguise throughout all the different levels and dimensions of the universe.”
— Andrew Harvey

“Look at you, you madman, Screaming you are thirsty And are dying in a desert when all around you there is nothing but water!”

There are no accidents.

If it’s appeared on your life’s radar, this is why: to teach you that dreams come true; to reveal that you have the power to fix what’s broken and heal what hurts; to catapult you beyond seeing with just your physical senses; and to lift the veils that have kept you from seeing that you’re already the person you dreamed you’d become.

Poetry
“The world is never the same once a good poem has been added to it.”

-Dylan Thomas (1914-1953)

One of my very favorite poems is Longfellow’s “Psalm of Life” which says:
Lives of great men remind us
We can make our lives sublime.
And departing, leave behind us
Footprints in the sands of time.”
This particular poem is a big footprint that Longfellow left on this earth. He is quoted all the time, because he says it so well. He doesn’t have to go on and on with explanations and examples, we know exactly what he means, and we take it to heart. When John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote: ”All you need is love” we listened, and remembered, because those five little words had such an impact in the context of a simple and beautiful song. Poets, and their poetry, change the world.

WE PROJECT OUR STRENGTHS

“Any situation that you find yourself in, is an outward reflection of your inner state of beingness.”
— El Morya

We have discussed that OUR WORLD MIRRORS WHO WE ARE BACK TO US. When we get upset by something outside of us, our reaction shows us that we have an inner wound to be healed.

Just as we can be unconscious of our wounds, we can also be unconscious of our strengths. If you are really drawn to the positive qualities in another person, you are being invited to own those same qualities in yourself.

“The people we are in relationship with are always a mirror, reflecting our own beliefs, and simultaneously we are mirrors reflecting their beliefs. So relationship is one of the most powerful tools for growth… if welook honestly at our relationships we can see so much about how we have created them.”

Inner Journey: STEP INTO SELF-AWARENESS

“Getting in touch with your true self must be your first priority.”
— Tom Hopkins

Here are some different aspects of self-awareness:
•Know yourself – Explore who you are: your defences, your blocks, your talents, your aspirations, etc.
•Accept yourself – We are at war with ourselves when we resist or deny certain aspects of who we are. Acknowledge the truth of who you are right now – the positives and the negatives. Only when we own our present reality can we change.
•Control yourself – Set clear, conscious intentions and discipline yourself to meet them.
•Express yourself – Go to your heart to identify what has meaning and purpose for you. Live your truth. Identify ways you can give back to life and be in service.

We work on each of these aspects all the time. But as our lives go through cycles, we predominantly work on one of them more than the others. Which aspect are you more conscious of lately?

“Our lives improve only when we take chances … and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves.”
— Walter Anderson

“Adventure can be an end in itself. Self-discovery is the secret ingredient that fuels daring.”

A Note from the Universe

Do you know what’s already happened this month? A million Beethovens were born. A million Oprahs. A million Einsteins. A million Florence Nightingales. A million Martin Luther Kings. And a million Madame Curies, to name just a few. Each as capable of moving mountains, touching lives, and leaving the world far better than they found it.

And so you can just imagine how all of us “here” watch in anticipation to see which ones will have the courage to do whatever little they can each day, with what little they’ve got, from where they are, before their baby steps turn into giant leaps for the legions who will follow them.

It’s so in you,

The Universe

Poetry
“Poetry is that art which selects and arranges the symbols of thought in such a manner as to excite the imagination the most powerfully and delightfully.”

-William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878)

Poetry seems to be a lost art sometimes, I don’t think we appreciate it enough. I like that with just a few words a poem can illustrate a concept that seems too difficult to explain. It’s because we feel the poetry in our heart first, and then think about its meaning and how it applies to our own lives. I like to read a poem out loud every night before I go to sleep. It puts me into that state where I am ready to dream.

Daily Tarot: Emperor

You’ll need determination and perseverance to accomplish anything of substance today. Pick something (or accept something that has been assigned to you) and stick with it until day’s end. If you apply concentrated effort, you should be able to make a huge headway. Even if not, your single-minded approach will attract allies for tomorrow. You have more influence and authority than you suspect. Use them wisely.

Thinning (original poetry by Cat)

Thinning

The veil thins and the season thins as well………

Rising energy draws the life force from all of nature;

Leaving behind the drained and withered shells of what was…..

Today, the spirits of nature are dying…………

Receding within before succumbing to the dark sleep;

Lending their energy to the Otherworld as the veil thins……

Tomorrow, the door to the Hall of Ancestors opens…..

Voices born upon the wind, spectral yet reassuring;

Drifting gently like leaves upon the currents……

Power shimmers from heaven and earth……….

The veil thins further…growing, stretching and becomes taught;

Almost to breaking, the time of high magick is here..don’t blink…

As with all things, nothing is permanent………..

The moment passes, soundlessly sliding back into shape;

Thickening, spiraling out like ripples on a pond………

With a silent sigh, all of nature relaxes…….

Easing into dark slumber, to flow upon it’s natural course;

Resting, gaining strength, contemplating the coming cycle…

“Perhaps the most famous icon of the holiday is the jack-o-lantern. Various authorities attribute it to either Scottish or Irish origin. However, it seems clear that it was used as a lantern by people who traveled the road this night, the scary face to frighten away spirits or faeries who might otherwise lead one astray. Set on porches and in windows, they cast the same spell of protection over the household. (The American pumpkin seems to have forever superseded the European gourd as the jack-o-lantern of choice.) Bobbing for apples may well represent the remnants of a Pagan ‘baptism’ rite called a ‘seining’, according to some writers. The water-filled tub is a latter-day Cauldron of Regeneration, into which the novice’s head is immersed. The fact that the participant in this folk game was usually blindfolded with hands tied behind the back also puts one in mind of a traditional Craft initiation ceremony.”

Irish Central: Ancient Irish myths that invoke the spirit of Samhain

Ancient Irish myths and legends will get you in the Halloween and Samhain spirit.
Samhain is the ancient Irish festival that became Halloween as we know it and its because of these Irish roots that we have plenty of Halloween-worthy Irish legends and myths.
The Celts believed the year was divided into two parts, the lighter half in the summer and the darker half in the winter.

ThoughtCo: Sacred Plants of the Samhain Sabbat

In most modern Pagan traditions, plants and their folklore are an integral part of belief and practice. In particular, many of the Sabbats are associated with the magical properties of different plants. Samhain falls on October 31 in the northern hemisphere, and six months earlier if you live below the equator. Let’s take a look at Samhain, the witches’ new year, and seven plants that often correspond with the season.

EarthSky News: Moon goes by Jupiter on Halloween

On October 30 and 31, 2019, watch for two brilliant luminaries – the crescent moon and the dazzling planet Jupiter – to pop out in close vicinity of one another as dusk deepens into nightfall. Given clear skies, you should have no trouble seeing either world, because the moon and Jupiter rank as the 2nd-brightest and 4th-brightest celestial luminaries, respectively. By early November, a larger crescent moon will leave king planet Jupiter behind to join up with the ringed planet Saturn.

Patheos-Pagan: A Samhain Spell: Protection From Unwanted Spirits

With the coming of Samhain, the veil between worlds thins. It’s long been believed that on this night the spirits of the dead roam freely among the living. As such, we often welcome the spirits of our beloved ancestors to come visit our homes.

Inner Journey:

REVIEW AND RECOMMIT

“Few people have any next, they live from hand to mouth without a plan, and are always at the end of their line.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just think: When we are driving, we know where we want to go and we plot out our route. When we plan and prepare a meal, we follow a recipe and monitor the food as it cooks.

How much attention do we give to planning the direction of our lives?

Taking the time to review our quality of life gives us a chance to re-evaluate what we are doing and where we want to go. It lets us fine-tune our direction, to ensure we are on track for what we most want.

Stop and think about your last 6 months. What did you learn? What would you like to do differently? Where do you want to recommit?

“Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.”
— A. A. Milne

“Always have a plan, and believe in it. Nothing happens by accident.”
— Chuck Knox

Vision

“Visionary people are visionary partly because of the very great many things they don’t see.”

Berkeley Rice

Isn’t this so true! Visionary people don’t seem to see obstacles – or at least, they don’t see them as obstacles, maybe just as challenges. I’ve heard so many successful business people say that when going in, they didn’t even know what could go wrong. They were so focused on looking at their vision that all the obstacles were a blur. They were so committed to following through with their vision that they couldn’t even imagine anything stopping them. And they turned something that vision into a reality.
