Inner Journey:

EXPLORE WITH QUESTIONS

“The word ‘question’ is derived from the Latin ‘quarrier’ (to seek) which is also the root of ‘quest.’ A creative life is a continued quest, and good questions can be very useful guides. Most useful are open-ended questions; they allow for fresh unanticipated answers to reveal themselves.”
— Source Unknown

Questions hold the power to draw out answers that surprise us. If we are on an inner journey to greater self-knowledge, we must seek to understand unfamiliar parts of ourselves. The most enlightening answers are released by our subconscious minds or by our intuition. Use questions frequently to go exploring.

Try these out:
•What qualities do you find most attractive in others? How do you exhibit those same qualities?
•What is your greatest fear? Why do you fear that?
•What message is your body trying to get through to you?

“If we would have new knowledge, we must get a whole world of new questions.”
— Susanne K. Langer

Conversation

“Silence is one of the great arts of conversation.”

-Hannah More (1777)

One way we can tell that we are really close to someone, really comfortable with that person, is if we can just sit in silence together. So often we feel the need to fill those “awkward pauses” with idle chatter. But with some people, we’re completely comfortable just sitting in silence. Sometimes more can be said in silence than can ever be said with words.

Daily Good: In Pursuit of Silence

In this thought-provoking piece, George Prochnick, author of “In Pursuit of Silence”, calls on us to examine our relationship with the sounds, or their absence, around us. Drawing on the wisdom of Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, and others, Prochnick proposes that by shutting ourselves off to the noise of our surroundings, we shut ourselves off to the world, effectively losing our place within it. “At some point the inability to ‘hear oneself think,'” he argues, “becomes the inability to think at all.” Read on to learn more about how we can achieve a greater balance between the variety of naturally-sourced and man-made sounds we encounter and the interludes of stillness and silence that beckon our attention. { read more }

OVERWHELMED?

“Life does not happen to us, it happens from us.”
— Mike Wickett

Are you easily overwhelmed? If so, answer this question in your journal:

While growing up, what did you experience too much of?

Experiencing too much of something leads to feelings of overwhelm. When we’re young, overwhelm can lead us to believe that we are not capable or that we are not good enough. These are power issues.

Awareness of when we are feeling overwhelmed can help us go inside, claim our power and change our experience of any situation.

“When we know that the cause of something is in ourselves, and that we (ourselves) are one of the few things in the universe that we have the right and ability to change, we begin to get a sense of the choices we really do have, an inkling of the power we have, a feeling of being in charge… of our lives, of our future, of our dreams.”

Inner Journey:

TIME FOR STILLNESS

“We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget that the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it’s all about.”
— Joseph Campbell

The sages all say that the path to liberation is found in entering the stillness within. To experience that stillness, we need to be willing to regularly stop the activity for a while.

How do we do this in a busy life? We set our priorities. Perhaps it means giving up a TV program or using a coffee break to grab a few moments of solitude. Perhaps we have to ask our partner, relative or neighbour to give us 30 minutes of time away from the kids. If we really want something, we can make it happen.

“Learn to pause… or nothing worthwhile will catch up to you.”

Teachers

“The teacher is no longer merely the-one-who-teaches, but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students, who in turn while being taught also teach.”

-Paulo Freire (1921-1997)

It is true that one of the best ways to learn is to teach. It gives us a better understanding of the material from the ground up. If we can take something complicated and distill it down so that someone else can learn it, we are mastering the concept ourselves. In addition, in the role of teacher, we are asked questions – questions we might never have thought of on our own. In finding the answers, we learn more about the concept, and about ourselves. So the students become the teachers as well. We are all teachers, just as we are all students.

Go within and you will find the noise of the world if you don’t also allow the quiet of silence to reveal itself. And what we need so very much is quiet to help us skillfully navigate our lives. Many of us yearn for the deep peace that comes from being in touch with the stillness in our depths. By seeking out silence in our daily lives, we are able to find balance within the constant noise and demands that bombard most of us each day. The rewards are in-built. HOW DO YOU SHOW YOU CARE?

“Love is not only something you feel. It is something you do.”
— David Wilkerson

In her book, ‘No Less Than Greatness,’ Mary Manin Morrissey speaks of a research study that explored how family members communicate with each other. Apparently, the most frequently spoken words between husbands, wives, sisters and brothers were “What’s on?” and “Move.”

She goes on to say, “We all desire great relationships but often settle for just getting by. Many of us have stopped questioning the fact that we may know fictitious TV families more intimately than we do our own.”

The most powerful force in our lives is our ability to love. Indeed, it’s the most basic essence of who we are. How do you experience and express your love for the people in your life?

“The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the other…. The whole purpose of life is to live by love.”

Elephant Journal: 4 Ways to Uncover your Golden Shadow during Eclipse Season

Eclipses represent a dance of light and dark—similar to our personal psyches and souls.
They have rhythms and phases that we can predict, and then at the same time feel chaotic. During an eclipse, as the sun, moon, and Earth play in shadows, we too have the same opportunity.

Daily Good: The Deepest Silence

“Ever abiding within and without, overlaid with the mutable patchwork garment we know as this visible universe, silence forms the woof and warp of all things seen and unseen. Yet at any instant it is immanent and accessible. To the mystic, silence is the ground, the core of reality. All else relates to and emanates from it. The deeper elements in all religions point to this silence. It is God, it is Buddha; it is Allah. But, to paraphrase Lao Tzu, to name it is to elude its essence. It can only be experienced. The fifteenth century Muslim born saint Kabir wittily observed, “I laugh when I hear the fish in the water is thirsty.” This paradox, which asserts that we are forever surrounded by silence yet all the while occluded to its existence, forms the key dilemma in spirituality.”

Thought.Co: Setting Up Your Imbolc Altar

It’s Imbolc, and that’s the Sabbat where many Pagans choose to honor the Celtic goddess Brighid, in her many aspects. However, other than having a giant statue of Brighid on your altar, there are a number of ways you can set up for the season

Inner Journey:

TRUST YOURSELF

“I never know what the next lesson is going to be, because we’re not supposed to know; we’re supposed to trust ourselves to discover it.”
— Melody Beattie

How deeply do you trust your own guidance?

Always trust that you know what’s best for you. To move forward in your life, gather information from the ‘experts,’ consider how their advice relates to your situation and then act only on what feels right for you. What does your whole being (mind, body and soul) say ‘Yes!’ to?

You are the only expert for your own life.

“I trust so much in the power of the heart and the soul; I know that the answer to what we need to do next is in our own hearts. All we have to do is listen, then take that one step further and trust what we hear. We will be taught what we need to learn.”
— Melody Beattie

“Ultimately, we must learn to trust ourselves. When we do this intimately and intelligently, the world opens full of meaning before us. We find that we ourselves are the doorway to a fathomless understanding of the source of life itself. We need only to learn to walk through it.”
— James Thornton

A Note from the Universe

Sometimes when you’re ready for a change and you kind of know it but won’t admit it, when it comes, not only are you surprised, but it hurts.

Yeah, I know that doesn’t help much, unless you remember the “ready” part. Because there is simply no change that might ever transpire in time and space that happens before you’re fully able to use it for your own growth and glory.

Love watching you create,

The Universe

Moments

“A player’s effectiveness is directly related to his ability to be right there, doing that thing, in the moment… He can’t be worrying about the past or the future or the crowd or some other extraneous event. He must be able to respond in the here and now.”

-John Brodie

John Brodie is the famous former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. How do I know this? My brother and my father were BIG fans when we were living in the Bay Area. Athletes know how important it is to be fully present in the moment when competing. There are too many factors that have to fall into place to succeed – and the only way to get them to do that is to be there: mentally, physically and spiritually.

For example, pink communicates affection and admiration, red communicates love, white communicates pure unconditional love and good luck, striped carnations communicate regret over unrequited love and yellow communicates rejection or disappointment in love

On December 23 and 24, 2018, the waning gibbous moon – just past the solstice full moon – passes to the south of the two brightest stars of the constellation Gemini. These two stars are noticeable for being bright and close together. In sky lore, they represent the starry eyes of twin brothers. One star is Castor, and the other is Pollux. On these nights, the moon is also passing to the north of Procyon, the Little Dog Star

WHERE’S YOUR ATTENTION?

“Only one thing has to change for us to know happiness in our lives: where we focus our attention.”
— Greg Anderson

What do you usually focus on: problems or solutions?

When our mind dwells on a problem, we stay stuck. Woe is me! But when we can shift to ask how we might achieve a solution to our problem, our subconscious mind, thinking and creativity move into gear. New possibilities open up.

Get in the habit of asking for solutions!

MBG: What This Month’s Rare Retrograde Means For Your Love Life

The Native Americans call it the Hunter’s Moon, because the game is fat from a summer of foraging, and now is the time to go hunting and prepare stores for the long winter ahead.

Inner Journey:

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES FOR TODAY?

“Most people are so busy knocking themselves out trying to do everything they think they should do, they never get around to do what they want to do.”
— Kathleen Winsor

When we clearly set an intention, our conscious and subconscious minds mobilize to help us meet that intention. At the start of each day, thoroughly review what commitments you have made to others for the day, and decide what commitment(s) you will make for yourself.

What can you do today that will move you one step closer to your personal goals? Own your power to choose to meet your own needs. After all, we are much better able to help others when our own needs are met. And at the end of the day, when you’ve honoured your commitment to yourself, acknowledge your success.

“If you want to make good use of your time, you’ve got to know what’s most important and then give it all you’ve got.”

Forgiveness

“The forgiving state of mind is a magnetic power for attracting good.” Catherine Ponder

Forgiveness tends to be one of those things that is easy to say, but hard to do. We get caught up in the hurt and pain and for some reason we don’t want to let that go. But forgiveness is freeing – it is healing, and it brings with it all kinds of life lessons and spiritual growth. And that is always good.
