Herbal Muse: Herb Profile: Blessed Thistle

Blessed Thistle (Cnicus benedictus), also known as Spotted Thistle and St. Benedict’s Thistle, is a member of the daisy family that is native to the Mediterranean region, North Africa and western Asia. During the Middle Ages, blessed thistle was cultivated in European monastery gardens as a medicinal herb and recommended for gout and digestive complaints. In combination with fenugreek seed, blessed thistle is traditionally used as a galactagogue to stimulate lactation in nursing mothers. It is also among the 27 herbs and spices that flavor Benedictine liqueur, the recipe for which is known only to three people at any time.

In many ancient Pagan civilizations, gods and goddesses associated with the hunt were held in a position of high regard. While for some of today’s Pagans, hunting is considered off-limits, for many others, deities of the hunt are still honored. Tuning into the sacred of the everyday takes practice. Things around us don’t suddenly become more awe-inducing but our perception of them can change. “When something is recognized as sacred, it is known to have a quality that is beyond the material, physical world. It’s not subject to the mind’s analysis, judgment, or interpretation.” In this article by psychologist Gail Brenner, practices for opening your mind to daily graces are introduced, along with an invitation to expand your awareness through gentle reminders

EarthSky News: Mercury below Venus in morning sky

Tomorrow – April 16, 2019 – presents the closest pairing of the planets Mercury and Venus in the morning sky for all of 2019. These two worlds will be around 4 degrees (width of two fingers at an arm length) apart on the sky’s dome. They’ll be close enough together to fit (or nearly fit) inside a single binocular field. So if you see Venus, but not Mercury, in the predawn/dawn sky, try aiming binoculars at Venus to view Venus and Mercury in the same binocular field together.

Inner Journey:

THE EYES OF THE SOUL
Today, we want to share a passage from Martia Nelson’s book, ‘Coming Home’:
“My greatest teacher was the experience of living in split realities: personality and true self. Personality is our daily companion, our conscious self that sees the world through the eyes of limitation and dutifully keeps us informed about what we can and cannot do. True self, on the other hand, patiently stands by, offering the unwavering knowledge that a state of vibrant well- being and unlimited possibility is our true nature, a birthright that can be lived if we choose to do so. … True self simply refers to the aspect of our being that is completely aware of its expanded nature no matter what we may be experiencing at the time.”

Whenever we feel constrained, fearful, unworthy, inadequate or anything we deem to be negative, we have identified with our personality. We can always choose to view the same situation from the perspective of our soul.

“As a Witness, you begin to discover that you are not that which you have been observing; you are not those things that you have been noticing about your body. Instead, you are the noticer.”
— Wayne Dyer

Happy Monday,

Let’s start the new week with a quote about feelings. The way we feel and the the way others make us feel is important. While it’s not good to bottle them up (ever) we must sometimes choose how and when we show them. Learning to surf our emotions gently can greatly ease the stress and anxiety that turbulence can cause. Be like water and allow the ebb and flow of your tide to carry you through the day.

MNN: Why do bees have pockets?

When you see bees flitting about your garden, you might notice that some of them have orange or yellow clumps along their hind legs. Resembling tiny saddlebags, these bright spots of cargo are pollen baskets or corbiculae. These baskets are found in apid bees, including honey bees and bumblebees.
Pollen sticks to bees each time they visit flowers. As the Adirondack Almanack points out, “It sticks to their antennae, their legs, their faces, their bodies. They become one giant pollen magnet.

BELIEVE IN YOUR UNLIMITED POTENTIAL

“You cannot see anything that you do not first contemplate as a reality.”
— Ramtha

How do you typically define yourself? Do you tell yourself and others that you are slow and methodical, that you have two left feet, that you are lazy, or unimaginative or that you can’t hang on to money?

In our unconscious self talk, most of us rarely say positive things about ourselves. List the positive and the negative ways you describe yourself. Then look over your list and contemplate how those definitions limit your ability to be cosmic in your outlook and performance.

Many Pagans honor the goddess Diana (pronounced di-ANN-ah) in her various aspects. Purpose
“Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today.”

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

This is from my favorite poem, “The Psalm of Life” which starts “Lives of great men remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and departing leave behind us, footprints in the sands of time.” It’s about following the examples laid before us, and at the same time, making our own way – becoming a new example, a new light to guide others. Longfellow understood that we need to keep going, to keep pursuing our spiritual growth, because that is our ultimate purpose.

Please do not procrastinate taking one minute to write down your answer to this question. Capture it on paper and this will help build awareness, commitment and discipline.

“How soon not now, becomes never.”
— Martin Luther

“Talk does not cook rice.”
— Chinese proverb

“Do you know what happens when you give a procrastinator a good idea? Nothing!”

Today’s Recipe: Banana Oat Chia Muffins

I wanted to make a healthier banana bread recipe. So I reduced the fat and sugar then added oats and chia. It came out pretty darn delicious.

Thought For The Day: April 10, 2019 ” Banishing the Shadows”

Happy Wednesday,

We all have the power to create amazing personal change in our lives. The sad truth is that too often we spend our time and energy looking back. We focus on the bad things that have happened or old hurts and disappointments. However, if we face forward into the light, the sun, we can find a new beginning filled with hope and we can recognize the blessings that fill our lives.

Pioneer Thinking: Dandelion Remedies

You can use dandelions as an herbal plant and a medicinal plant; it’s no longer just a weed. You can use the dandelion roots to make tinctures or teas. The dandelion flower can be used to make dandelion wine and the leaves can be chopped and added to salads, soups or stews.

Elephant Journal: The 6 Best Spiritual Teachings of Wayne Dyer to help us Get Over Ourselves.

It was six months after I separated from my ex-husband that I met Wayne Dyer for the first time.
He spoke at a World Summit in Pasadena, California and I was absolutely transfixed from the moment he stepped on stage.
Wayne was powerful beyond measure, as anyone familiar with his work knows. He had a candid, no nonsense way about him and infused some of the most profound teachings I heard that day with a heaping dose of humor.

EarthSky News: Moon, Mars, Pleiades on April 7 to 9

Generally, any moon that’s less than one day old (or 24 hours past new moon) is hard to spot with the eye alone, or, sometimes, even with binoculars. For the most of the world, however, the moon was over a day old after sunset on Saturday evening (April 6, 2019).

Patheos-Pagan: Weekend Witchery: It Ain’t All Spells & Rituals

My life centers around magic. A good deal of which isn’t what you might call high magic. It ain’t all spells and rituals. The magic I do these days tends toward the everyday pursuits of hearth, health, and happiness. This weekend was a prime example of how magic shows up for me and how I work it.

Inner Journey:

WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.”
— Sir John Lubbock

Throughout the day, continually ask yourself about your underlying motivation. Why are you doing what you are doing?

Is it for selfish, manipulative or fearful reasons? Is it for honest service with integrity? Maybe you’ll discover you don’t know. Perhaps you will see that much of your activity lacks purpose.

This is a great way to become more conscious. Your intention and motives are fundamental to the results you will receive. Set high intentions and your life will blossom.

“The great thing in the world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.”
— Oliver Wendell Holmes

Purpose

“The human soul, the world, the universe are laboring on to their magnificent consummation. We are not fashioned… marvelously for nought.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Spirituality & Health: The Power of the Smile
BY RUTH WILSON

“I wonder, ‘Is it OK to be happy in a world filled with greed, environmental destruction, and other forms of violence?’ I then recall Mary Oliver’s words: ‘Happiness, if done right, is a kind of holiness.’ Yes, it’s OK to smile — even necessary to do so.

Thought For The Day: April 9, 2019 “Never Give Up”

Happy Tuesday,

This quote is personal for me. It’s a reminder to never give up. Never give up on yourself or who you are, your dreams, or life in general. We are all worthy of good things, good relationships and being better people. Refuse to let others knock you down or keep you down. Above all refuse to let them change you into a creation not your own. You’ve totally got this!
