Thought For The Day: Oct. 26, 2018 “Being Diverse”

Happy Friday,

Let’s end the week with a thought about diversity. Regardless of race, gender, education, or age, we all have something to offer to the world. We all have ideas and talents that we can share. By forgetting about our differences and treating each other like human beings the world becomes a much better place.

Inner Journey:

REMEMBER YOUR SPIRITUAL SIDE

“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.”
— Soren Kierkegaard

Reminding ourselves often of our spiritual natures truly changes the quality of our lives. It helps us relax, slow down, lighten up, and generally find more space and joy in life.

When we get down on ourselves or life, we can pull back and ask, “How might my soul regard this situation? What am I being invited to experience?”

This shift in perspective helps us let go of the resistance that always comes with negativity. As energy once again begins to flow, our outlook brightens.

“Spirituality is the sacred center out of which all life comes, including Mondays and Tuesdays and rainy Saturday afternoons in all their mundane and glorious detail. … The spiritual journey is the soul’s life comminglingwith ordinary life.”
— Christina Baldwin

“It is not my business to think about myself. My business is to think about God. It is for God to think about me.”

Spirituality & Health: 5 Ways to Not Be Irritated All the Time
BY KATHRYN DRURY WAGNER
“I’m taking this car and moving to Florida!” the elderly man in front of me at the DMV raged. He held up the line for a good 20 minutes, all over a measly $25 fee. I’m sure I wasn’t the only person in line thinking, “By all means, head for that state line… and now.” But you can’t completely blame the guy. Sometimes life triggers what can feels like an endless case of road rage. Even us yogis and meditators aren’t immune from it. Every little thing starts to grate, from the headline in the Washington Post to the #$% convection oven. Woah. If you feel like you are living life in a constant state of irritation, here are a few ways to calm down.

We’re in the midst of a movement against “overapologizing”—especially for women, who tend to apologize more often than men because they have a lower threshold for what counts as offensive behavior. To be clear, caring about how your actions affect others is rarely a bad thing. But the deeper problem seems to stem from the lack of understanding around why we apologize. Sometimes it’s just a reflex. And sometimes, it’s not coming from a place of concern at all.

Daily Good: The Monk, the Butcher & the Origins of Deep Counting

Our lives are based on what we count and how we count it. Somik Raha asks what would be different in our lives if we changed how we engage with counting. Raha takes us through stories of what is meritorious, which leads us into deep counting– counting which facilitates meaningful experiences. He then brings us into the understanding of how making distinctions is an act of creation and is juxtaposed against perceiving ourselves as nothing. This is the transcendent loop of infinity and seen in the scientific dance of making finer distinctions within a community, which has revealed a picture of larger, more meaningful truth. This truth is shared through stories that lead us to reflect on what counts and helps us transcend division and touch the reality of integration

Inner Journey:

CO-CREATION

“[Manifestation is] the art of fashioning a co- creative, synchronistic, and mutually supportive relationship between the inner creative energies of a person’s own mind and spirit and their counterpart within the larger world in order to bring a new and desirable situation into being.”
— David Spangler

I have always understood that Spirit works through us. Only recently have I really come to appreciate how Spirit works WITH us. The divine life force partners with our unique perspective, our passion and our skills to create new life situations.

We are not passive vessels for God’s will. To realize our highest potential, we must co-create with the divine.

“We must see ourselves as co-manifestors — partners in manifestation — all engaged in the primal act of unfoldment and emergence. Each act of manifestation may be directed toward a specific outcome, but it also contributes to the greater manifestation of the wholeness, love, compassion, and creativity of the primal source from which we all come.” — David Spangler

Forgiveness

“To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.”

-Robert Muller

Think of this from a purely economical point of view. When you invest in blame, judgement, criticism and victimization, what do you receive in return? Does an attempt at making someone else feel bad bring any real benefit to you personally? Or could it actually cause you harm? Now, knowing that we are each responsible for our own choices and responses, think about this: When you invest in forgiveness, acceptance, understanding and harmony, what do you receive in return? Here there are many rewards! Among them: peace of mind, coherence, stability and love.

Patheos-Pagan: Celebrating Hermes, Messenger God & Guide Of Souls, On Samhain
Hermes is the messenger of the gods in the Greek pantheon, “angelos ton theon” or “Angelos Athanatôn“. He’s also known as psychopompos, or psychopomp which means “guide of souls”. Like Hekate, he is a god of traveling between the worlds, and is a god of travel in general. Both of these deities are strongly connected with one another. So it’s fairly straightforward why in addition to recommending Hekate as a good deity to honor during Samhain, I also recommend giving Hermes his due.

Inner Journey:

LET GO OF THE PAST

“Your journey has molded you for your greater good, and it was exactly what it needed to be. Don’t think that you’ve lost time. There is no short-cutting to life. It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. And now is right on time.”
— Asha Tyson

No regrets. As we become more aware, we begin to realize that there’s a purpose to everything that happens. This builds our trust, and supports us in being willing to be more open and daring to really experience life as it unfolds.

If we pay attention to what’s happening in each moment, we will discover that life continually brings us opportunities to heal our past wounds. When a painful memory surfaces, we can take the time to feel it fully, give compassion to ourselves and any others and allow the energy to release. As we deal with the past in this way IN THE PRESENT, we free ourselves to more fully connect with life.

“The next message you need is right where you are.”

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES FOR TODAY?

“Most people are so busy knocking themselves out trying to do everything they think they should do, they never get around to do what they want to do.”
— Kathleen Winsor

When we clearly set an intention, our conscious and subconscious minds mobilize to help us meet that intention. At the start of each day, thoroughly review what commitments you have made to others for the day, and decide what commitment(s) you will make for yourself.

What can you do today that will move you one step closer to your personal goals? Own your power to choose to meet your own needs. After all, we are much better able to help others when our own needs are met. And at the end of the day, when you’ve honoured your commitment to yourself, acknowledge your success.

“If you want to make good use of your time, you’ve got to know what’s most important and then give it all you’ve got.”
— Lee Iacocca

One’s ability to succeed, is always proportional to one’s willingness to fail.

Besides, all failures are temporary, all tigers are paper, and life is a many splendored thing.

Forgiveness

“The forgiving state of mind is a magnetic power for attracting good.” Catherine Ponder

Forgiveness tends to be one of those things that is easy to say, but hard to do. We get caught up in the hurt and pain and for some reason we don’t want to let that go. But forgiveness is freeing – it is healing, and it brings with it all kinds of life lessons and spiritual growth. And that is always good.

Elephant Journal: 22 Reminders of How to Be a More Grateful Person.

I attempt to teach (by example in my daily life, and through my writing) kids and grown ups how to be more mindful. I am a school teacher (bilingual 3rd grade) and a yoga teacher.
Mindfulness practice—through whatever methods (yoga, meditation, walking, running, gardening, writing, eating, community service, and the like)—results in greater gratitude.

MNN: How to protect the world’s largest living thing
Pando, the world’s largest-known organism, is dying. But there might still be time to save this wonder of nature.

Walking through this aspen grove in Utah, you could be forgiven for missing the forest for the trees. That’s because this isn’t really a grove of 40,000 individual aspen trees, but rather 40,000 clones of one organism — a single root system spread across 43 hectares in Utah. It’s the most massive living thing known to science.

In skylore, every full moon has many names, and most are tied to months of the year. But some moon names are tied to seasons, such as the Harvest and Hunter’s Moons. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. The Hunter’s Moon is the full moon after the Harvest Moon

Patheos-Pagan: Honoring Hekate, Queen Of Ghosts And The Restless Dead, At Samhain

Aside from Persephone, Hekate is an excellent goddess to honor during Samhain. As a goddess of the crossroads, liminal spaces, ghosts and the dead–especially and particularly the restless dead–and of course of witchcraft, she comes to mind naturally around this time of year.

Inner Journey:

MY WILL OR DIVINE WILL?

“It is important not to ‘need’ what you are calling to you but rather to have a certain detachment about it. Let it be all right if it doesn’t come, or if it comes in a different form than what you expect. After you haveasked for something, surrender to whatever comes as being appropriate.”
— Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

“Acceptance says, True, this is my situation at the moment. I’ll look unblinkingly at the reality of it. But I’ll also open my hands to accept willingly whatever a loving Father sends me.”
— Catherine Marshall

“This business of hozho. The way I understand it … I’ll use an example. Terrible drought, crops dead, sheep dying. Spring dried out. No water. The Hopi, or the Christian, maybe the Moslem, they pray for rain. The Navajohas the proper ceremony done to restore himself to harmony with the drought. You see what I mean. The system is designed to recognize what’s beyond human power to change, and then to change the human’s attitude to be content with the inevitable.”

A Note from the Universe

Of course, these are crazy times to be alive,  when virtually anything could happen next, fortunes are made and lost overnight, friends come and go, and lovers glimpse eternity between fear and ecstasy.

That’s why zillions upon zillions of souls, more than you will ever know, said, “No wa-y-y-y, José.”

And it’s why a few brazen billion, said, “Whoooo-Hooooooooooooooo!”

You so brazen,

Life

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

-Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)

We need to ask ourselves: Are we living the life that we want to live? If not, then make some changes! Life is too short, life is too precious, to miss out on. Every moment is holy. It is there for us to embrace. How many moments go by without notice? Are we spending our time analyzing the past, which is done and gone – or planning for the future, which is changing every instant? Or are we living, truly LIVING in this moment, NOW, where our life is taking place? It is not enough to exist, choose to live!
