Inner Journey:

PERCEPTION DEFINES OUR REALITY

“The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.”
— Henri Bergson

Our entire universe is energy — vibrating waves of pure potential. The electromagnetic vibrations of our consciousness interact with the energetic potential that exists everywhere as the life force to ‘collapse’ the waves and create matter. So the patterns of our minds create the form of our world.

By simply observing a form, we influence it. We in turn are influenced by others. This challenges us to be more aware of the quality of our being and the vibrations we transmit.

“There is no reality in the absence of observation.”
— The Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

Wonder

“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder… he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”

-Rachel Carson, 1965

Children have this wide-eyed sense of wonder, everything is new to them, everything is a surprise. If we could just see through their eyes again for a day… look at a line of ants as a parade rather than a nuisance, see the clouds as dancing rather than threatening rain… how might this change our perspective? Wonder brings with it a sense of contentment, the world looks good and we feel good in it! We can learn a lot from our kids.

Daily Good: In Pursuit of Silence

In this thought-provoking piece, George Prochnick, author of “In Pursuit of Silence”, calls on us to examine our relationship with the sounds, or their absence, around us. Drawing on the wisdom of Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, and others, Prochnick proposes that by shutting ourselves off to the noise of our surroundings, we shut ourselves off to the world, effectively losing our place within it. “At some point the inability to ‘hear oneself think,'” he argues, “becomes the inability to think at all.” Read on to learn more about how we can achieve a greater balance between the variety of naturally-sourced and man-made sounds we encounter and the interludes of stillness and silence that beckon our attention. { read more }

Inner Journey:

OVERWHELMED?

“Life does not happen to us, it happens from us.”
— Mike Wickett

Are you easily overwhelmed? If so, answer this question in your journal:

While growing up, what did you experience too much of?

Experiencing too much of something leads to feelings of overwhelm. When we’re young, overwhelm can lead us to believe that we are not capable or that we are not good enough. These are power issues.

Awareness of when we are feeling overwhelmed can help us go inside, claim our power and change our experience of any situation.

“When we know that the cause of something is in ourselves, and that we (ourselves) are one of the few things in the universe that we have the right and ability to change, we begin to get a sense of the choices we really do have, an inkling of the power we have, a feeling of being in charge… of our lives, of our future, of our dreams.”

Wonder

“Wonder is music heard in the heart, is voiceless.”

-Rosemary Dobson, 1973

We can’t hear wonder with our ears, or see it with our eyes. It’s something that goes on in our hearts. It’s the process of translating something that might ordinarily seem mundane into something spectacular. It’s recognizing the divine within everything and everyone.

Inner Journey:

FORGIVENESS BRINGS JOY

“The greatest evil that can befall man is that he should come to think ill of himself.”
— Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Do you feel worthy of having joy? Do you feel you deserve it?

The first step to activating our inner joy is to eliminate the blocks to it. We can start by truly forgiving ourselves and all others. Forgiveness calls for a shift in our perception. It is easier to forgive ourselves and others when we really understand that each of us has always done the very best we knew to do at that time.

“If we don’t forgive ourselves for our mistakes, and others for the wounds they have inflicted upon us, we end up crippled with guilt. And the soul cannot grow under a blanket of guilt, because guilt is isolating, while growth is a gradual process of reconnection to ourselves, to other people, and to a larger whole.”

“The timelessness of art is its capacity to represent the transformation of endless becoming into being.”

-Lewis Mumford (1895 – 1958)

A piece of art is like this frozen moment of time. It is something that, once complete, doesn’t change. It exists just as it is, perfect the way it is. People, on the other hand, are continual works-in-progress. Time doesn’t stand still for us. We never seem to be quite satisfied that we are suitable for framing!

CREATE SPACE

“All this talk and turmoil and noise and movement and desire is outside of the veil; within the veil is silence and calm and rest.”
— Bayazid al-Bistami

We need to create space if we desire to change and grow. Only in emptiness can meaning, intuitive guidance and truth arise.

Give yourself space by spending time in nature, taking an hour or day off, enjoying quiet moments for reflection. Take time to smell the roses. Breathe in the wonder of life and its bounty. Open so your deeper awareness and imagination can percolate through mundane thoughts and activities. Let go of both resistance and force to allow yourself to connect more deeply to life.

“I do only want to advise you to keep growing quietly and seriously throughout your whole development; you cannot disturb it more rudely than by looking outward and expecting from outside replies to questions that only your inmost feeling in your most hushed hour can perhaps answer.”

Every day, our creativity guides us. We are each an artist, and life is our canvas. Life is our instrument, our marble slab, our blank page. All the choices before us are the colors, the notes, the words. We are creating our life as we create a work of art. Let’s make it beautiful!

There’s a sense of security in what is old, and with something new coming into your life it’s natural to be a bit afraid. Give this new situation a chance and give yourself time to get comfortable with the new conditions. It could be as simple as getting your hair cut or changing your glasses frames, but it could be much bigger than that.

“No one can find his work, what he really wants to put all of himself into, when everything he does he is made to do by others. This kind of searching must be done freely or not at all.”

“The first time I heard anyone speak of the “wood wide web,” more than a decade ago now, I was trying not to cry. A beloved friend was dying too young and too quickly. I had gone to see him for what I took to be the last time. He was tired by pain and drugs. We sat together, talked. My friend was a woodsman. Trees grew through his life and thought. His grandfather’s surname was Wood, he lived in a timber-framed house that he had built himself, and he had planted thousands of trees by hand over the years. “I have sap in my veins,” he wrote once.” Excerpted from his recently published book, Underland: A Deep Time Journey, “The Understory” is an examination of the life beneath the forest floor. WHAT’S ON YOUR HOT LIST?

“The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want.”

A Hot List is basically a to-do list with one key difference: it only includes topics or tasks that really matter to you, those that genuinely affect your quality of life. You know — the ones you never get around to! The ones that will make your life your own!

Keep a prioritized Hot List handy to remind you to claim 5 to 15 minutes to focus on and write about what counts in your life. Even 5 minutes is better than nothing. Start small and the momentum will build.

“You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage — pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically — to say ‘no’ to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger ‘yes’ burning inside.”

Persistence

“When you get in a tight place and everything goes against you till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the time and the place the tide will turn.”

-Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1847

I remember hearing an interview that Jay Leno did once. He was asked what he attributed his success to, and he didn’t even have to think about the answer for a second. “I didn’t go away!” he said. He explained that there were many comedians who he felt were as good, or better than he was, and they all worked the same clubs, the same circuits, so they got to be friendly. But he said the difference between him and these other guys was that he never gave up. Many of the other guys got worn out, or burnt out, or just plain tired and quit. But Jay loved what he was doing so much that he couldn’t quit. He kept going after his dream, even through some pretty bleak times. And now look at him! He could quit anytime he wanted to, because he has so much success that he doesn’t need the money. But he keeps going, because he loves it. And that makes all the difference.

We’ve been doing WisdomNews for a few years now. It has been a great source of joy for me. When we first started out, there were just a few of us involved, and we basically started the list with our family and friends’ addresses. But we persisted, did a little advertising, whatever we could do inexpensively, and the list grew – drop by drop, person by person – we’ve got a little river going now – or at least a steady stream! Thank you for subscribing, and for contributing to this e-mail community. Someday we hope to be a sea – and we will keep writing and keep persisting because we love doing this! Elephant Journal: The Vedic Astrology App that helped me Rearrange my Life—for the Better.

Timing is everything.
Have you ever wondered why no matter how much effort you put into a personal project, job application, or an important conversation, things just don’t seem to move forward?
I certainly have—a gazillion times. As a creative freelancer, I have received dozens of “better luck next time” emails and rejection letters, which have often left me feeling powerless, unmotivated, and in all honesty, like a failure.

Patheos-Pagan: Ancestor Altars: Working With Your Relatives

It’s the time of the year where we hear the words “ancestor altar” much more often in conversation. The veil is said to be at its thinnest, and those who commune with those not in this realm stay busy with messages, while the rest of us wonder about our deceased relatives, and what to do, if anything.

Inner Journey:

WHY? WHY? WHY?

“As long as one keeps searching, the answers come.”
— Joan Baez

Asking ourselves ‘why?’ helps us delve deeply into our main motives — why we do what we do. This process helps us go deeper into our reasoning, habits and unconscious beliefs. Once we become aware of our underlying motives, we can choose to change them,if we wish.

Regularly ask yourself, ‘Why am I…?’ Listen closely for the answer that surfaces in your mind, and write it down. Now look at your answer and ask why again. Continue with this process to reach the true source of your motivation.

“Men are more accountable for their motives, than for anything else….”
— Archibald Alexander

A Note from the Universe

Neither a promotion, losing weight, finding a soul mate, writing a book, nor becoming a billionaire will ensure happiness.

Because happiness, dear that’s not present at the start of a manifestation will usually not be present at its end.

Persistence

“Rome was not built in a day.”

-John Clarke (1596-1658)

I’ve always heard this quote, and never knew who said it, so I was happy to come across it this time around. How appropriate! In this fast-paced society we tend to expect instant gratification. How often do you hear people complain about how slow their computers are, or their dial-up, or the pizza guy? And all that spills over into our expectations for ourselves. We want that great job NOW, that dream relationship NOW, enlightenment NOW! But we have to remember that there is always divine timing involved. The seed needs time to sprout, the sprout needs time to grow. We are like that sprout that needs to keep pushing up the dirt, keep reaching toward the sun. We’re growing every day.

Daily Tarot: Strength

It may be fun to take a risk or two, but this is not the day for it. You can fight your way through any difficulty, but why make work for yourself or put yourself in harm’s way? Remember, harm comes in more forms than just what is physical. If you need to blow off steam and exert your power, maybe take it to the gym.
