ThoughtCo: Solar Magic, Myth and Folklore

In many Pagan traditions today, there’s a lot of emphasis on the magic and power of the moon. However, it’s important to remember that the moon isn’t the only heavenly body out there. The sun itself – something we often take for granted, since it’s out there all the time – has been a source of myth, magic and legend for thousands of years.

Daily Good: Joe Peace: A Peace Chain Reaction

“I was working at a friend’s studio. I walked in and picked up these scraps of clay off the floor and made these pieces about softball size, maybe seven of them. For me they were small because I’d been making larger sculptural pieces. So I made these pieces and said to my friend, “It’s a peace chain. I’m going to make it the rest of my life.” The year was 1991, and true to his word Joe Murphy — now known as Joe Peace — has been making and gifting the world peace pendants ever since. He’s made over half a million of them, each inscribed with the word ‘peace’ in one of 122 languages. Herbal Muse: Meadowsweet: Nature’s Aspirin

The sweet, almond-scented blooms of meadowsweet are rich in salicin, a compound with potent natural pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. In the 1800s, chemists began tinkering with extracts of meadowsweet, and the result was the creation of the synthetic drug aspirin.

Together with water-mint and vervain, meadowsweet was one of the three herbs held most sacred by the Druids, and it is among the fifty ingredients in a drink called ‘Save’ mentioned in Chaucer’s Knight’s Tale. The flowers were often steeped in wine and beer, and are still incorporated in many herb beers today. Learn more…  https://www.herbalmusings.com/meadowsweet-profile

EarthSky News: Moon and Gemini stars at dawn August 26 and 27

On the mornings of August 26 and 27, 2019, you’ll find the waning crescent moon in front of the constellation Gemini the Twins. Gemini’s two brightest stars, Castor and Pollux, represent twin brothers in Greek mythology, despite the fact that these two stars don’t look alike. If you look closely, you’ll see that Pollux is slightly brighter than Castor. Pollux is also more golden in color.

Patheos-Pagan: Don’t Call Me Sister: The Double Trouble Of Assumed Familiarity And Believing Only Women Can Be Witches

We are in the midst of an unprecedented transformation in witchcraft, where we have the freedom to claim the title for ourselves and openly discuss our practices. While all of us involved in this personal and societal revolution may have a common bond in calling ourselves witches openly, there are lingering dangers in making assumptions about those with us on this wild broom ride.

Inner Journey:

WHAT DO YOU FEED YOUR MIND?

“I then remembered why I avoid the ‘news,’ if that’s what you want to call it. Our ‘news’ is a misnomer, and it’s more like ‘the ongoing train wreck you can tune in to at any time when you want to divert yourself from your purpose and your happiness… lose your faith in humanity… and go from feeling like things are pretty good to feeling like the world is going to sh*t and why bother going on, I mean really?'”
— Ali Brown

Our beliefs create our reality. If we wish to live happy, healthy lives, it’s vital that we feed our minds healthy, nourishing material. The negative, sensational focus of today’s ‘news’ media hardly serves to enlighten us about the true state of the planet. Let’s open to our limitless potential by keeping our focus firmly on what uplifts us.

“The world is not dying. It’s not falling apart. It’s changing. I personally believe that pessimism is an indulgence, despair an insult to the imagination. There are wonderfully positive things out there.”
— Wade Davis

Leisure

“Nothing excellent can be done without leisure.”

-Andre Gide (1869-1951)

One of my favorite quotes is from Emerson who said: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” There seems to be a magic formula for success and excellence. We need down-time and a good attitude! This leisure time lets us clear our minds and think more efficiently. It helps us keep things in perspective. Haven’t we all had the experience where we’re working so hard, struggling to solve a problem and the answer is just not coming to us? And then, we take some time off and do something else and the answer just pops into our head! There is a purpose to this, and it is divine!

ARE YOU SERVING?

“You may be good, but what are you good for? You’ve got to be good for something. You’ve got to be about some project, some task that requires you to be humble and obedient to the universal principles of service.”
— Stephen R. Covey

“We had to learn ourselves, and furthermore we had to teach the despairing men, that it did not matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life but instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life, daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for the individual.”

BE TRUE TO YOURSELF

“In the final analysis, we count for something only because of the essential we embody, and if we do not embody that, life is wasted.”

Where are you not being true to yourself?

All blocks arise when we’re not being authentic, when we’re not being true to ourselves. We know we’re not being authentic when we feel discomfort of any kind.

When our thoughts, feelings and actions align with our essence, we express the qualities of soul. Always trust that your soul knows what’s best for you.

Believe in yourself and act on your ideas. Give yourself permission to do what you want with your life. Take the initiative to set meaningful goals for yourself and achieve them. Begin to tell yourself why you CAN have what you want!

Paradoxes

“God hides things by putting them near us.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Isn’t this so true? It’s one of those “forest for the trees” examples. There is joy and love and beauty all around us, and right inside of us… and yet where do we look? Many of the great spiritual teachers answer every question they are asked with the same statement: “Look within.” They might say it in hundreds of different ways, but the meaning is the same. It’s so simple, and yet so complex- what a paradox!

Daily Tarot: Strength

Anger could raise its ugly little head today, but you have things under control. Don’t engage, if possible, and tactfully deflect the worst of whatever misunderstanding caused the outbreak. If it’s repressed anger, there may never be any loud or angry words. You can smooth any ruffled feathers simply by standing up and not being intimidated or rushed into any action or opinion. Be at your best today.

Bia was a Titan goddess in Greek mythology, daughter of the Titans Pallas and Styx, and had three siblings; Nike, Kratos, and Zelus. Bia was the personification of force. NEED HELP?

“Asking for help doesn’t mean that we are weak or incompetent. It usually indicates an advanced level of honesty and intelligence.”
— Anne Wilson Schaef

The path of healing begins with awareness that things can be different. We must be willing to open to the potential, the possibility for change.

We also need to acknowledge that we are not in this experience alone, without support. The divine power of love is here for us if we are willing to open to receive it. Sincerely ask for help and loving support will manifest in both mundane and magical ways.

“The healthy, the strong individual, is the one who asks for help when he needs it. Whether he has an abscess on his knee or in his soul.”

Paradoxes

“All cases are unique, and very similar to others.”

-T.S. Eliot (1888-1965)

I find this to be true every day of my life. We’re each living our individual lives, going about our business, and our families- and when we take time to connect with each other, we find out that so often we’re going through the same things! We can relate to each other, because in a way we’re living out the same scenarios. It helps to share our experiences, rather than to feel that we’re in it alone.

“It was a fortuitous flip to the essay on pronghorns that persuaded me to pick up Craig Childs’ The Animal Dialogues: Uncommon Encounters in the Wild. In each intimately wrought tale on antelopes, hawks, and red-spotted toads, I found a writer and translator more versed in the tongues of the non-human world than I will ever be. Childs honors the weight and magnitude of his encounters with creatures large and small, preserving the distance and mystery that comes with each meeting. He strives to convey in words what cannot be expressed in words, and in each essay I see one who does what I wish to do myself: To connect with respect, to speak for the voiceless, to bear witness to life and death in their eternal splendor.”

Inner Journey:

TIME TO CHANGE?

“When coasting in our comfort zones, we don’t grow. We continue to do more of the same…. Maintaining a comfort zone can, paradoxically, lead to discomfort in the long run. If by being comfortable we avoid important life issues, internal tension accumulates…. Eventually, as both internal and external pressures for change persist, the ‘comfort zone’ ceases to serve us.”
— Eric Allenbaugh

It takes effort to change. What do you most want to change in your life? Make a list of what you can do to start the process. Try journaling, perhaps. Read books. Take a course. Find a mentor. Seek out support.

How will you commit time to make it happen? When are you going to start? Your life is passing quickly!

“Be not afraid of changing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.”

Imagine the ridicule that the Wright Brothers must have had to put up with. But did that deter them? Obviously not! Anything new and innovative might be regarded with fear or suspicion because it is untried, unproven. I guess it’s just a part of our human nature to be skeptical. Thank goodness there are those among us who follow their dreams regardless of their critics! From just one idea, when it blooms, many seeds spring forth, and a whole garden of ideas can then grow and flourish! That’s progress. And we can do the same thing spiritually, too.

EarthSky News: Full Sturgeon (or Snow) Moon on August 14 and 15

On August 14 and 15, 2019, everyone around the world (except far-northern Arctic latitudes) will see a full-looking moon lighting up the nighttime from dusk until dawn. In North America, we often call the August full moon the Sturgeon Moon, Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon. For the Northern Hemisphere, this August full moon ushers in the second of three full moons of the summer season.

Patheos-Pagan: 3 ways to make Sun Water

So often we make and use Moon Water, but have you ever considered making water infused with the energy of the sun? Sun water is fun to make, easy to use and can connect you with the energy of the sun. Within my own practice, the acknowledgment of the Sun plays an important part. For the Celts the Sun was sacred, it was worshiped in many forms.

Inner Journey:

GIVE TO YOURSELF FIRST

“First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do.”
— Epictetus

Do you want more in your life? More love? More happiness? More money? More satisfaction? Then explore how you can BE more.

In the Delfin Knowledge System, Leslie Fieger advises, “You can have more when you are willing to give more. You must begin this process by giving more to yourself. Give yourself more time; give yourself more attention; give yourself more love; give yourself more of what you want. Then decide how to offer the more that you are (and have) to the world and you will receive even more back in return.”

“Let the waters settle you will see stars and moon mirrored in your Being.”
— Rumi

Today’s Magickal Creature: Mermaids and other Marine Monsters

With most of our blue planet covered by water, it’s little wonder that, centuries ago, the oceans were believed to hide mysterious creatures including sea serpents and mermaids. Merfolk (mermaids and mermen) are, of course, the marine version of half-human, half-animal legends that have captured human imagination for ages. One source, the “Arabian Nights,” described mermaids as having “moon faces and hair like a woman’s but their hands and feet were in their bellies and they had tails like fishes.”

Ideas

“You talk of our having an idea; we do not have an idea. The idea has us, and martyrs us, and scourges us, and drives us into the arena to fight and die for it, whether we want to or not.”
-Heinrich Heine (1797-1856)

When we get a really good idea, we can tell that it is a really good idea because it won’t let go of us. We think about it, dream about it, and pursue it until we can make it a reality. It’s like the Universe is tapping on our shoulders, saying: “This is it, come on, let’s go!” How could we resist?

The Dagda was an ancient god of the earth, originally an agricultural god. When Christianity became dominant in Ireland, the Dagda became a comical figure, a brute giant with a huge gut. This was poor treatment of this respected god of many talents, called the “Good God” or “Shining” in old Celtic myths

TRYING TOO HARD?

“Thinking about interior peace destroys interior peace. The patient who constantly feels his pulse is not getting any better.”
— Hubert van Zeller

Are you trying too hard to be good, to be perfect, to be spiritual?

‘Trying too hard’ is an expression of fear. If you can replace the fear with faith that everything always serves our highest good, your confidence and peace of mind will serve your aspirations.

“So many people work so hard, to achieve, attain, accumulate and cherish their fortunes. How many of us blissfully fill our days and nights being the Divine expression we are? This is the meaning of life. It is to be. As a result, all of your creations are a natural outflow from the Divine within your being. This is the joy of life.”

Ideas

“Ideas come from God.”

-Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Ideas are so ethereal- we wonder where they come from, how we “get” them. There is one school of thought that says that there are no new ideas- that every idea ever conceived is floating around in the universe and it is up to us to tap into that intelligence, and kind of “download” it into our consciousness. It makes sense that ideas come from God. But then we have to wonder if God “gives” us these ideas, or if we go out there and “find” them from our own creative pursuits.

Inner Journey:

WHAT ARE YOU LACKING?

“Money cannot fill an empty soul.”
— Julia Cameron & Mark Bryan

Where in your life are you experiencing lack?

Are you experiencing a lack of self esteem? Of humour? Of energy? Of love? Of money and abundance? Whatever you believe you are missing, it is there to be claimed.

The first step starts with shifting your perspective. See the glass as half full rather than half empty. Focus on accepting and appreciating what you DO have, and more will be attracted to you.

“Both abundance and lack exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities. It is always our conscious choice which secret garden we will tend… when we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that’s present — love, health, family, friends, work, the joys of nature and personal pursuits that bring us pleasure — the wasteland of illusion falls away and we experience Heaven on earth.”

Ideas

“Every new idea has something of the pain and peril of childbirth about it.”

-Samuel Butler (1835-1902)

It seems like ideas are a dime a dozen, there are so many of them out there. But the real value comes from the execution of those ideas! Ah! How many times have we seen some invention or some new contraption and said: “I thought of that!” Yes, and someone else did, too- and the difference is that someone took that idea and ran with it, and made it a reality. It’s easy and fun to sit around and brainstorm. The “pain and peril” comes from the work that is involved in developing the idea into something that is viable, something that is tangible.
